Casa Na Bolom, San Cristobal de la Casas, Mexico - Explore & Book

"Staying at the Casa Na Bolom museum is guaranteed to enhance your visit to San Cristóbal. Founded in 1951 by archaeologist Frans Blom and photographer and conservationist Trudy Blom, the house has become a cultural centre for studies into indigenous cultures and the conservation of the Lacandon Jungle and its people.Volunteers run the house and continue the Bloms’ work (money from guests goes towards various community projects in the jungle), and tours of the museum are included in the price of your stay. Throughout the house you’ll see photos taken by Trudy Blom chronicling her explorations and excavation work. Rooms are characterful, with antique wooden furniture and multi-coloured textiles. You can talk to members of the Lacandon villages (if they’re in town), attend one of the regular candle-lit piano concerts in the museum’s small chapel, or simply swap stories with other enthusiastic guests over delicious communal meals. Afterwards, cosy up before bed in front of your own fireplace. Highs Money from guests directly benefits the Lacandon peopleYou get a free guided tour around the museum - an architecturally and culturally fascinating building with many artefactsLying in bed, warm and cosy from your open fireThere are fascinating trips to the local villages, where you'll visit markets, dress up in traditional Mayan clothes and try the local hooch Lows Non-central location, about 7 blocks from the Zócalo (main sqaure)Rooms have no central heating and can feel damp and chilly in the morningsYou’re not staying in a boutique hotel but a museum, so be prepared for people wandering about the courtyardsNo safe boxes in the rooms, although you can leave valuables in the reception/office" - Lucia Appleby

We loved exploring this renovated hacienda of Danish Swedish explorers that did incredible work with the indigenous people of the region. This couple was so inspiring and you could literally feel the passion for their life's work in their desk and chair. A must visit museum when in the area!

Wow! You have to check out his museum and garden. The fact that they also have a small cafe and restaurant in the middle that is so quiet is just a bonus.

I visited the museum, not the hotel. Although the museum is quite small, I spent about 30 minutes there. The exhibitions are well-curated, with information available also in English, and the building itself is beautiful. It's a nice spot if you have some spare time, but not a must-see in my opinion. It's conveniently within walking distance, and you won't need much time to explore it. Restrooms are available. A side note: it would be helpful if they could separate the museum and hotel on Google Maps to make reviews for each more distinct.

Very interesting hotel with a deep history of indigenous people! It's a bit far from the city center, but it's worth staying there and supporting indigenous business! Price is very reasonable! Don't forget to check out their museum, back garden and chapel

I went to visit the museum, and it is a truly amazing experience. The place itself is wonderful. Every room with information and pictures is delightful and, of course, to learn about all expeditions that Gertrude and Frans made to the Lacandon Maya Jungle is incredible.

One of my favorite little museums and gardens in San Cristobal. Wonderful place to meander and learn the history of this inspiring Swiss woman (and a bit on her Danish husband) and of many of the indigenous people they befriended and advocated on behalf of from the 1950s onwards. The gardens are a lovely place to sit in or to wander and be inspired. There is a small hotel and restaurant and a few other options here, all of which are on the grounds and in the original house where this couple and their adopted Mexican daughter lived and worked for decades.

The hotel has a lovely ambiance, however it is not a traditional hotel. We arrived with a group of 8 people at 10 pm and there was only one person in the office, so check-in took a long time. The staff member had to check each of us in and then show us to our rooms. The rooms are lovely, with a fireplace in every room. We were in an upstairs room and had to navigate a narrow, steep, winding set of stairs to get to our room. The bathroom had a large tub that was difficult to climb into. Some rooms are a short walk through the gardens. While the hotel and its surroundings are beautiful, it is not designed for easy access for those with mobility challenges. The staff, when they arrived the next morning, were pleasant and professional and the breakfast offered a variety of options.||The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to town, the textile museum and the markets.
