I Celebrated Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca, Mexico, Here's How I Planned My Once-in-a-lifetime Trip

"Heading out into the Centro Histórico to get a coffee before I set off for the airport the next morning, I passed Casa Oaxaca, Alejandro Ruiz’s hotel and restaurant. Inside I found a tranquil courtyard where guests sat drinking coffee and eating a late, leisurely breakfast and, to one side, a large ofrenda lined with photos of the chef’s friends and family in ornate silver frames." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"Hotel Casa Oaxaca Small and intimate, Hotel Casa Oaxaca feels quintessentially Oaxacan: It’s colonial in style, with whitewashed walls contrasting with vivid pops of carnelian red and fuchsia. It’s surrounded by local vegetation. And it’s filled with Oaxacan handicrafts and art. Common areas invite visitors to settle in and relax, like the on-site library, pool, and terrace with beautifully-made cotton hammocks. The hotel's seven rooms are arranged around the central patio. Visitors consistently say the service is exceptional, with attention to detail and a “go the extra mile” attitude mentioned frequently as one of the main reasons to return. Another is the hotel's central location, as it offers an easy walk to many of Oaxaca's top sights."

My husband and I celebrated our 50th anniversary at Casa Oaxaca and it proved to be exactly what we expected of this wonderful boutique hotel. We have stayed there several times in the past and have always been well taken care of. We had not been to Oaxaca de Juarez in several years and decided that this is where we had to be for our 50th as Oaxaca was where we went for our honeymoon back in 1975: at that time, however, we stayed at the Marques del Vallée - I don’t know that Casa Oaxaca was there is those days: doesn’t matter, we would not have had the pesos back then. Our kids called ahead to Casa, so we had 50 roses waiting for us in our room. The day of our anniversary, breakfast included a beautiful cake from compliments of Casa. Dinner that night at Casa Oaxaca The Restaurant, included a Mariachi Band (another surprise from the kids), great food @ The Restaurant. Upon our return to Casa, our room was ‘a dream’: votive candles throughout the room, rose petals throughout the room and a beautiful ♥️ on the bed: a dream. A beautiful ending to a spectacular day. Thank you Casa Oaxaca for taking such good care of us and making the gifts from our kids a reality! Then we were off to La Costa Chica (Mazunte) for a few days before heading home. Love Oaxaca de Juarez and Casa Oaxaca. Much as Gracias Casa Oaxaca and staff. Ustedes nos faltan mucho!

This is the perfect small classy boutique hotel that makes a trip memorable. The staff was fantastic. Super welcoming and highly professional. Hotel is very intimate, feels like someone's private home. Terrific vegetation!||Food/Drinks in courtyard were perfect. Service really great, always friendly and totally understated.||Pool area small but very welcomed after walking around hot city!

This Michelin rated restaurant was everything one hoped for. Excellent view from rooftop seating to delicious and plentiful food. From appetizers to desserts all with an incredible budget friendly bill. Squash blossoms to Milan’s beyond the food was out of this world. Highly recommend.

Amazing hotel! It is elegant, impeccably clean, and offers outstanding service in every aspect—whether in the rooms, the restaurant, or the front desk. One of the things I loved the most was the garden design. It creates such a peaceful atmosphere that you wouldn’t believe you’re right in the heart of the city. The tranquility is truly remarkable. For relaxation, I highly recommend spending time by the pool—it’s the perfect spot to unwind. And when it comes to food, don’t miss their café de olla, the exquisite guacamole, and the chilaquiles with green mole. Each dish is full of flavor and a delight to the senses. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for comfort, great service, and a relaxing escape in the city! Pedro (the server) is the best! Thanks!

Absolutely loved this place. It’s not fancy but it’s very welcoming and comfortable and in the perfect location. |The staff are all charming and the breakfast was entirely to our taste - fruit, yoghurt, granola, fresh bread and tea/coffee served in the central courtyard |We also had two lunches and one dinner which were delicious. |Definitely recommend.

Its origins as a private home are still self evident - no corporate blandness here … instead, rooms arranged around two beautiful courtyards, bedecked by flowers and shrubs … it’s a sight to behold amidst the bustle of Oaxaca.||We had room seven - lots of space, a lovely very private terrace and the widest bed we’ve ever slept in … all it lacked was a kettle to make tea, but the staff were happy to oblige.||The breakfasts are delightful - fresh fruit, delicious home made bread or cake and juices galore. ||The staff are lovely - esp the chap in charge and the young woman who works nights … ||A delight to stay here.||The only tricky thing is a consequence of post Covid Oaxaca … roof top bars all around. During the day this really is a haven. As night falls, the volume goes up - and up … on a Saturday night a haven no longer … nothing Casa Oaxaca can do about it but take your ear plugs because no longer is the world outside a distant prospect. It is all too poundingly present. Same for everywhere else … ||This aside, give yourself a treat …

This hotel is a peaceful haven in the middle of bustling Oaxaca. With a delightful patio bar/restaurant and a small pool to cool off in, it has everything.||Our room was a suite which had a separate access to the pool as well as bedroom and sitting areas. What a treat!

When I think about our stay at Casa Oaxaca, I think of a high standard of service and quality of experience. Everything was before we arrived, and our overall stay was excellent. The staff at Casa Oaxaca Hotel is beyond incredible, including Dennis, Pedro, and more! We had a large, beautiful suite and superb breakfast meals each morning, and the inn was a terrific place to stay during Day of the Dead celebrations. We can't wait to go back and do it all again.

Yelp
Ok so im doing my best to review this restaurant fairly despite a few factors i cant get past, which i am sure are cultural. 1) its a nice clean restaurant 2) the staff is really on point 3) there are some vegetarian options despite the fact that its oaxacan cuisine 4) the interior is very pretty That said, chopulinas (grasshoppers) were an option add on to the guacamole but as if that was not enough, one of the menu items offered Worms, ants, and grasshoppers and i nearly died. I had a hard time appreciating the food as a result.. wondering what was crawling where. My moms salad had some wilted leaves (she loves salad and did not eat it) and the shrimp were dry and not deshelled. The bean soup looked more like the water the black beans soak in so it grossed me out. The squash flowers were an interesting taste. I would not ho as far as saying they were good. Their golor reminded me of the grasshoppers so that didnt help lol

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, wonderful staff, excellent chef, delicious morning breakfast, peaceful central courtyard where you can relax or work, immaculate, small enchanting pool area, dinner can be arranged and in the evening a bar with artisanal mezcal as well as other drink and tapas. What more could you want? We have stay three times for about a week at the end of our vacations. We leave with the best of memories of Oaxaca.
