Upon arriving in Sintra, we stepped into Casa Piriquita for breakfast. We tried their most famous dessert, and we were very satisfied with its quality. The pastry was fresh and flavorful, living up to its reputation. The place was quite busy, and it took us a while to find a seat, but the experience was still enjoyable. Despite the crowd, the atmosphere remained pleasant, and the service was efficient. It was a nice start to our day, and we'd recommend stopping by for anyone visiting Sintra, especially if you're looking to try local pastries.

Google
Famous spot in Sintra, but honestly, the desserts didn’t impress me — a bit overrated. The place was overcrowded and felt rushed. Still, the service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere has that old-world charm. Worth a visit if you’re curious, but don’t expect anything mind-blowing.

Kiara Sforza

Google
Authentic food prices from €1.50-2 for really lovely pastries. There is a bit of a wait to sit down but it’s a really cute experience and if you go you have to try the Travesseiro!

Alexandre Pinto

Google
What an amazing pastry. I had the "Travesseiro da Casa Piriquita" and it was delicious. Friendly service. Arrive early in the morning if you don't like crowds as it's a popular place. I came here twice in less than a hour. Really delicious.

Google
A fun, fast stop where I could have lingered far longer than we did. Located near the square where the National Palace is located. There is a take out counter- the line was long. But we sat down for some delicious Portuguese pastries. Excellent stop.

Google
First stop in Sintra was a bakery, obviously. I’m a tourist, fatten me up and call it culture. We hit Piriquita, the oldest bakery in town and basically a rite of passage. Grabbed the classics: a flaky Travesseiro (pillow, but make it sugar) and Queijadas (cheese tarts). Pro tip: this place gets swarmed, so carb-load before you go get enchanted by castles. Priorities.

C Neon

Google
This is a well known bakery that serves traditional Portuguese baked goods. Specifically, the pillow and the tarts are the claim to fame. Overall, these are worth a visit.

Google
The waiter has a lack of respect for the customers. She delivered the food, dropped the juice on the table, and didn't even apologize or assist. It's an authentic place, but such behavior ruins the entire experience and the place's reputation. Food is average

Yelp
Adorable and delicious pastry shop in the heart of Sintra! It's certainly a bit touristy, but it absolutely deserves all the hype as the oldest and most traditional pastry shop in the city. I was waiting for my tour of the Palace of Regaleria to start, and stopping by Casa Piriquita seemed like the perfect way to spend my morning. I tried two of Sintra's classics -- the travesseiro and quejada. The travesseiro was delightful, especially when fresh and warm; the pastry was super soft in the center yet delightfully flaky, with a slight crisp on the outer layers. It melted in my mouth almost seconds after taking a bite, and the almond cream inside was tasty and not overly sweet. It truly lives up to its name (literally "pillow"). Equally impressive was the quejada, a tasty little cheese tart with a slightly chewy, springy texture. It's not very sweet and has a great cinnamon flavor; it's also quite small, so it's the perfect little two-bite treat if you don't want to have too much. The store is quite popular, so it's very busy at all hours. However, they move quite quickly and efficiently, especially for the takeout counter. When you come in, squeeze your way over to the ticket machine on the wall to the right of the door, and then wait for them to call out your ticket number. There is a €5 minimum to use a credit card, so be sure to either have cash on hand or be prepared to buy a few pastries (not that that's hard -- they're absolutely delicious; our two pastries were €3,20, as context).

Yelp
This was a random find while exploring Sintra, and was pleasantly surprised with this find! I am especially glad I tried the Travesseiro. It was flaky with a dense filling, wish I tried the nutella one as well.

Yelp
We enjoyed all the pastries we had from this shop. My absolute favorite was the Pastel da Cruz Alta - it was so delicious! We only regret not getting more before we headed back out of the city. I highly recommend here!

Yelp
4.5 stars Came here to get the famous Travessario they are made with thin layers of puff pastry they are light and delicate and less crispy and buttery than pastel de nata. They are filled with a soft custardy almond cream. They are covered with sugar and quite sweet. They are probably the best version of travessario but I'd rather have a pastel de nata. It was good to try and was better than the other one I had at another bakery. I also got a queijada a type of cheese cake I did not try these but instead i tried the pastel de Sintra it was a pastel de nata but filled with the same almond custard that was in the travessario. They were less sweet than the travessario and more crispy. I don't know which I like better. There were a bunch of other pastries I wanted to try but my stomach can only hold so much. Take away is by number, as soon as you enter grab a ticket on your right and look at number counter straight in front. There is also dine in which seems like it's more crowded. The take away line goes quickly. They take cash or card. To get there go up the steep walking street and look for the bright yellow shop on your left. When visiting the Palace of Sintra be sure to make a stop here.

Yelp
I had the famous Travesseiro (with almond cream filling) and a queljada from Casa Piriquita in village of Sintra and just thought they both were good..but more along an ok. and not like a 'wow..super memorable...must go back' side of things. Note that I am not really a sweet tooth person (more of a savory side), so I understand this pastry may not be my first preference. One thing though...this place gets very very busy. The lines are out of the door. It's good to buy just one to try it..just because..it's a touristy thing to do. But..once you tried it for the experience, I wouldn't think it's necessary to have to repeatedly go back there again! Price wise very affordable. But the hassle of getting in the line to get this...compared to actual taste (note I'm not really a sweet tooth), was just...ok and not a must go to me.
google avatar

Ozzie T.

Yelp
We sampled a bunch of different desserts. They were all on the sweeter side. We thought the pasteis de nata was just ok here. We also tried the almond pastry. We liked that one but it was very sweet.
google avatar

Parker S.

Yelp
The famous Travesseiro at Piriquita was amazing! People are lined out the door at 9am for a reason here. Pastries are all reasonably priced being less than 2 euro. The travesseiro is either filled with almond, nutella, or apple. We tried both the almond which is traditional and the nutella. Both were amazing and you cant go wrong trying either. I'd highly recommend visiting to get some of the best pastries in all of portugal!

Yelp
We had to try the pirquita and travesseiro while visiting Sinatra. All 5 of us felt the pirquita was average - 3/5. The big hit was the travesseiro-5/5! We all would of eaten one each. If you like soft tasty custard with a light pastry, you must try it. They recommend you buy the 6 pirquita in a package for a lower price. We visited their second location in Sinatra which was less crowded.

Yelp
Small pastry shop in Sintra Vikl. They didn't have a wide variety of pastries, I ordered the trevsaido and it was good. The prices are reasonable especially in a very tourist area. The service was very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the closest bakery to the Palácio Nacional de Sintra (Sintra National Palace). They don't open until 09:00. I think most tour groups will stop by here because they have Sintra specialties, like the queijada. They're 1,20€ each, and they taste sweet and cinnamon-y. They're worth a try and maybe good to share with another person. The server helped me in English, and they accepted credit card. They had a handheld machine that accept chip and tap payments. They didn't have restrooms. I think they were directing people to the public ones down the stairs.

Yelp
Food: Tried all of the 'specially made in this region' and was glad I did! I absolutely loved their original travesserio with the almond filling inside. I did try the one with apples and that one was also very good, especially when its war and straight from the oven however the original just tasted so much better for me! Cost: Super affordable so don't be afraid to go down the list and getting one of each to try! Environment: Extremely busy- especially when we came in (I think there was a morning rush). The line moved fairly quickly but it was bustling for sure so early in the morning right off the bat! Did circle around a little later in the day and it did seem to have died down a little but still busy nonetheless. Service: Very quick! Be prepared to know what you'll want to order. Uniqueness: Unique sweets from Sintra!
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
I stopped by Casa Piriquita and tried their Quejidas De Sintra (regular and nutella). The regular one was by far more popular and better: Crunchy/flakey, sweet, delicate. The nutella flavoured one was decent. Overall, I'd give them 8.3/10

Yelp
If you come to lisbon, you must take a day trip to Sintra. If you go to Sintra, you must stop by this place and order some Travesseiros. Travesseiros, which translates to pillows or cushions, is a signature dessert of Sintra. Luckily, we were there early and got seated fairly quickly, but i can see how this place gets packed during the lunch hours. this place is about a 15 minute walk from the Sintra station, and is located nearby the Sintra National Palace. for breakfast, we got Orange juice and expresso. As for the food we got the Travesseiros and some other pastries. The Travesseiros were fluffy with cream on the inside. Very light and delicious breakfast. this place has two sections. One for dine in, and the other were you take a number and order items for take out.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Excellent bakery with many fresh backed goods. We bought the signature almond pastry house special which was still warm and the coconut tart. Both were outstanding. The service was great and quick. Don't let the small entrance area fool you, just go in and turn right up the stairs and wait for a table in the bigger dining room.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Sunday around noon to try out some pastries, and it was pretty crowded at that time. I don't remember everything we ordered but we got 8 pastries to share amongst 5 people. It was most of their specialty items including the travesseiro da piriquita (puff pastry and almonds), queijadas(cheesecake), pasteis de Sintra (cake made from egg and almond cream), and pasteis da cruz alta. Most of the pastries are small, so it's nice if you are just wanting to try something. Most of the items were too sweet for me, but I also don't really have a sweet tooth. Since a lot of them use egg and almond cream, they tasted pretty similar. I can't say any of them were super memorable but I'm still glad I got to try it out.

Yelp
Looking for a bakery with some very unique and traditional offerings in Sintra? Casa Piriquita is the place! With both a quick togo option and a sit down cafe style area--service is quick and helpful. The menu is marks 5 of their specialty pastries along with numerous other options. I got 3 traditional specialty sweets and a small coffee with milk. A really cute spot to chill as you explore the city.

Yelp
Had the Queijada and travesseiro at this place, and what has really surprised me is the diversity of Portuguese food, even when same/ similar ingredients are used. The two items I tried were on recommendation of our tour guide, as local specialties for Sintra - both very good, but also very sweet! Recommend this place to try them out. Yelp 2019.
google avatar

Matea P.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this bakery because they have pastries unique to Sintra that you cannot find in Lisbon. The Pastel de Sintra, Queijada, and Travesseiro were absolutely fantastic. We also ordered the Pastel de Cruz Alta and the Bolo de Coco, which were really good. Believe it or not, despite eating all of these, I did not get a sugar rush. I was actually tempted to get more!
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
A must stop in Sintra from all the travel blogs. They are known for their travesseiros, but they have a variety of different types of other pastries and sweets. Of course, I had to try the pasteis de nata for comparison. I also tried the house travesseiros, the pastel de sintra, and pastel de cruz alta. I got a latte and my friend a black coffee. Coffee options were simple and was solid choice (not acidic), and they give you a tube of sugar for sweetening if you need it. Best thing we tried was the pastel de nata. It was very good, but after having warm, fresh ones just out of the oven, these don't hit the same. Everything else was good for one bite just to try. I personally don't prefer very sweet desserts and these were VERY sugary and sweet. I probably don't have super developed taste buds because I couldn't tell the difference between the pastel de sintra and pastel de cruz alta haha. Everything was reasonably priced with most pastries being under 2€. Overall, I would definitely try the pastel de nata and order just one of whatever else the group wants to try and just have small bites of the other pastries. You can buy ready made pastries for takeaway or you can take a seat in their dining area and order from a waiter. The dining area was small but bright and airy. We were seated right away and whole experience was pleasant.

Yelp
Portuguese Desserts Portugal is well known for their desserts with the most well known being the pastel de nata or Portuguese egg custard tart We enjoyed plentiful pastel de nata but also one finds we hadn't heard about at all That find was the travesseiros or pillow pastries of Sintra Travesseiros are most associated with Sintra's oldest pastry shop Piriquita and these airy puff pastries are filled with a delectable egg almond cream Travesseiros (Piriquita) / Egg Pudding (Piriquita) Piriquita (Sintra, Portugal) Seating is limited indoor or takeout and credit cards are accepted. Go early as a line forms.

Marivic L.

Yelp
This place is great. Stopped by to get items to munch on as I explored the town. You come in, take a number, and order items you can see in the case. Everything I ordered was delicious - from the croquettes to the special pastries. Just go, order a variety of items, and take a stroll. If you prefer to sit, there appeared to be a decent-sized dining area.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Popular spot to visit and even though small in size it is a well known establishment famous for its house made regional pastries. You will not be disappointed with any of the items for sale here. Enjoy them while having a seat at their cafe where they provide table Service or take them to go. I myself could not resist since my visit was short in this area of town and had the 5 pastries they are known for and highly recommend having one of each when visiting here. Do not be discouraged they are small in size, but the food items are packed with flavor.
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
We went on a tour, and this was one of the highly recommended places. The pastors are amazing. Pastel de nata n travesseiro are the recommended pastries. I was still jetlagged so I didn't get to try it but I hear mixed reviews. Some say it's great, some say it's OK. You must try on your own and decide! Specially, if you're in this region
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
This was recommended by our tour guide in Sintra. So many yummy pastries and we selected 3. All were so good. This place is a busy little place, popular with locals too. And it's an iconic little place that's been around since the 19th century. Definitely worth a visit. We had the little custard pies famous in this region, a flakey pastry with almonds, and another with cinnamon. I'm sure all are yummy, can't ho wrong!!
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
This shop is really cute and worth the stop if you're in Sintra. Friendly staff and line moves quickly. Make sure you take a number or you won't have a place in line! They have a display where you can order pastries to go or you can sit and eat. A lot of the pastries are almond based which I'm not a big fan of, but they were good and tasted freshly made. Very happily surprised to see Brazilian brigadeiros.
google avatar

Yelp
We two stopped for a snack in late Aug 2023. Pushing past the long line waiting to order takeout, we were seated in less than 5 minutes. SERVICE: 4.5. She was cheerful and prompt despite the crowd. FOOD: 4.0. Very good Pastel de Nata and Espressos. AMBIANCE: 3.0. Clean and lightly decorated; comfortable.
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
Overall: Overhyped, but still worth a visit if you have the time. The good: The coconut cakes were great, and the prices are very reasonable (I think we paid around $6 for 6 pastries?). Lots of different options to choose from, and the staff was helpful when ordering (in English too). The not-so-good: The pastries were all just, fine? Not sure where the hype is coming from. They certainly weren't bad, don't get me wrong, but they weren't worth all the hype. The Travesseiros were dry and unimpressive and didn't have hardly any almond paste in them. The queijadas were one note, and the pastel de nata weren't as flavorful as others that we'd had. Long lines and literally seconds to raise your hand (and/or yell). Food/drink: 7/10 Atmosphere: 7/10 Service: 7/10
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
This bakery was recommended on our tour, so we had to check it out during our lunch break. We got a number for the line and picked a variety of pastries from the glass. Lucky for us, the wait was short. Pastries bought included the travesseiro, pastel de sinatra, bolo de coco, and some small round pastry with chocolate. Personally, the pastries did not stand out to me. They were still overall delicious and a perfect sweet treat to end lunch!
google avatar

Kristelle B.

Yelp
One of the unmissable stops in Sintra has got to be Casa Piriquita. We went here for the Pillows of Sintra which is a sugary puff pastry filled with egg yolk and almond paste. I'm a sucker for almond-flavored anything and this one didn't disappoint! It was flaky and soft. We also got a bunch of their other specialty items on the menu including a pork pie just to balance everything out with something savory. Can't really remember which is which but it was a good spread. We paired everything with an amazing cup of latte and freshly squeezed orange juice. Overall our bill came to just €18! Definitely worth the money and the hype. Note: try to come early, like we did before it even opened at 9 am, as this is a popular spot for tour groups. Otherwise, Piriquita II is a minute walk away that only does take-aways.
google avatar

Roberto Y.

Yelp
You must try this place if you are in Sintra. Pastries are delicious. The Travesseiro is one of their specialties and is really good. The place is not big, so you might need to wait for a table. But it is worth the wait. The place is a little bit noisy. Service is amicable and warm. Be ready to indulge yourself.
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
While in Sintra, we stopped by Casa Piriquita's second location, Piriquita 2, to try their famous travesseiros with much shorter of a line. We were told by multiple locals that this bakery was a must-try in Sintra, and it didn't disappoint! It was a pocket of flaky and delicate puff pastry with a smooth almond and egg filling inside. Rich but delightful, and the perfect thing to split between two people. We also tried the queijada, which was tasty, but definitely not the best queijada we had in Portugal. The pastry was quite hard and not as flaky as we were expecting, while the filling was a little too sweet for me. I'd definitely make this a stop for a light snack while in Sintra.
google avatar

Billy T.

Yelp
Came here as part of a private tour group - my tour guide mentioned how we had to try the pillow cakes that are a signature of Sintra. The shop itself is nice vibes with a good amount of indoor seating. We came in mid-day and found a table without any waiting. With regards to the food, the pillow cakes were fairly bussin but are not good for us Americans who have too much sugar back home. They're worth trying, but I like natas better.
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
"Travesseiro" translates to pillow and that's exactly what we had today. With coffee, these delicate and light puff pastries are filled with an egg cream and topped with dusted sugar. Light, delicious, sweet and about as "un keto" as you can get. One was enough. Sure, they have other great stuff here but the travesseiro are traditional to Sintra. Have one. [Review 16672 overall - 181 in Portugal - 184 of 2022.]
google avatar

Edward S.

Yelp
In Sintra, you need to try the pastries that originated from Sintra. Casa Piriquita has a fine selection of baked goods including the following Sintra specialties: Queijada de Sintra: A queijada is a round tart that contains queijo (cheese), eggs, milk, flour, and sugar. The filling is soft and the sugary brown crust on top is a little crispy. Travesseiro: A travesseiro is a flaky pillow-shaped puff pastry (almost like a turnover) filled with an almond custard paste. Ordering: You need to grab a ticket and you can wait outside. Once your number is called, you can go to the counter to order what you like. Take your pastries and eat them by the wall in front of the palace.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
One of the best nata pastries Service wasn't great but pastry is amazing with their latte
google avatar

Dipali G.

Yelp
This is a historical shop in the heart of sintra! They are known for the Travesseiros (also known as a pillow). They offer a few different flavors but out your guide told us to go with the original - which has a cinnamon and almond filling! This was a very sweet dessert that had the perfect amount of layers of puff pastry filling with almond cream! Must try if you are in sintra
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
So good! We obviously got the pastel de nata but the real star of the store for us was the yellow cake bar. Not sure the name but it was amazing! Service was quick and great place to visit!
google avatar

Bill C.

Yelp
Crazy line for takeout. Be aware that you skoot past the line for inside seating. Inside there is one server for entire room. She **moves** and is very intense but not unfriendly. Getting food was fast. Getting bill was sort of slow. Omg the sweets they offer! Latte very good. Espresso very good. Cafe Americano good as well. A nice stop for your visit to Sintra.
google avatar

Simone L.

Yelp
From the outside this place looks like nothing special, but when you walk in...WOWWWWW. We came here on the recommendation of our driver and he did not steer us wrong. This pastry shop definitely does it right. Portugal should be known for Travesseiro (pillow pastry) instead of their egg tarts! It's a puff pastry with a almond cream. Such a perfect balance of sweetness. We also got Queijadas which is a cheese tart, personally I would pass on this. In comparison it just wasn't even close. We walked around the town just eatin our snacks, literally amazing after visiting the castles. Which one of the castles is visible right in town. I believe they are cash only, and ordering in English wasn't bad
google avatar

Eva W.

Yelp
Of course we knew to get the Travesseiro which was absolutely divine!!!...and the Queijada which we didn't love. What was equally divine was the orange color dessert!! i believe the name is Brisas Do Lis! This was recommended by a tour guide that was in line ahead of us. OMG absolutely delicious and I will dream of one day returing to eat this again. Next time I will plan better and bring some back to the states like I did with the pastel de natas.
google avatar

William W.

Yelp
The bakery dates back to 1862. As legend has it, when Portugal's King Carlos I lived nearby during the summers of the 1890s and early 1900s (before his assassination in 1908), he was a regular and absolutely loved the pastry known as travesseiro (pillow) da piriquita. So the place became famous. The king actually helped name the bakery when he nicknamed the owner's very short wife piriquitá (parakeet). This famous pastry is still sold today, travesseiro being a Portuguese favorite (a puff pastry with a little sweet almond cream inside). In its 160th year of operation, this dessert is still appreciated by many, and the bakery is worth a stop. But I wouldn't say it's a five-star experience.
google avatar

Stan H.

Yelp
A must if you're visiting Sintra. You might not like everything but should try it. The orange jelly like pastry with coconut and something orange else is one of my favorites here.
google avatar

Cheryl Y.

Yelp
Overly sweet and "flat" tasting pastries. Not a fan. Tried the specialty, the sausage one, and pork pie thing. Favorite one was the pork pie, but I wouldn't say it's worth a return. Maybe I just done get Portuguese pastries?
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
We came here on a tour of sintra to try their traditional pastry. It was pretty busy around 11am and we had to wait a little bit for a table. I saw a film crew filming a show at this location as well, so this bakery is one of the traditions in sintra. The travassaro is delicious and flakes. I liked the subtle sweetness of it and it goes great with coffee. The service was prompt and fast. You sit down, order, and they bring you the food right away.
google avatar

Claire H.

Yelp
Get the infamous travessieros de sintra with unsweetened coffee because all the pastries here are very sweet - but delightful. I loved that everything was around 1-2 euros so it was easy to sample them all. They also have savory sandwiches like the prosciutto and cheese one that I ordered - which was completely delicious and less than 4 euros. Wow!
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
This bakery is popular in Sintra so I decided to stop by and check it out. It was packed inside and there was a line to order but it moved fairly quickly. They use a ticket system so you order when your number is called, a pretty efficient system. They have a variety of different pastries but I found the desserts to just be okay. I tried both the queijada de Sintra and the pasteis de nata along with a travesseiro. The egg tart was not one of the better ones that I've had. The crust was kind of soggy instead of crunchy but the filling was good since it had a lighter flavor rather than being very sweet. The travesseiro was unique and super flakey all around with a sweet filling inside. The queijada de Sintra was a cheese tart that didn't taste cheesy enough. It was also very small and not a favorite. Overall, it's a cute bakery to check out. Their baked goods feel pretty light since nothing is overly sweet.
google avatar

Philip M.

Yelp
Our tour guide took us here for pastries and coffee after lunch. This charming bakery is in the old historic center of Sintra. Upon entering there is a specific process for ordering. Immediately right from the front door the patrons are required to take a ticket and then begin viewing the pastry counter to decide which pastries to order. When your number is called and displayed on the wall mounted monitor then you can provide your order for pastries to the counter server. We recommend ordering any of the five house specialty pastries. We each ordered three of the specialty pastries and each was delicious!!! Queijadas, Travesseiros, Pasteis de Cruz Alta. Coffee must be ordered and picked up from the upper counter area. The dining area is small and we had to stalk for a table. We highly recommend this bakery for an authentic Portugal experience.

Hsin-Yi W.

Yelp
Portugal is one of the countries in Europe with the best bakeries especially their Pastel de Nata. Most of their town has their signature pastries and for Sintra definitely is Travesseiro, pastries in pillow shape filled with custard. Casa Piriquita is a historical, authentic and small bakery located in the heart of Sintra. There is limited seats but the wait was not bad. We ordered their Travesseiro and Quejiada de Sintra (about €1 each). Their pastries were simply plain but tasty and it's worthy a try.

Yelp
Cappuccino is the best. Pastries are all well done. The best now and always. I love Sintra and this place is the perfect place to get off your feet for a few to enjoy yourself.
