Before we booked our trip, I saw how many wonderful reviews Casa Valeria had so I was really optimistic that we found an amazing place and that we would have a wonderful stay, so I am saddened to have to write this review.
Pros: All of the staff are very nice and welcoming. The rooms are kept clean and the minibar is well stocked. The pool and loungers were lovely to enjoy on a hot day and the beach is a very short walk (4-5 minutes) down the road. If you need a taxi somewhere, reception will arrange it for you. Breakfast was delicious and there is a self serve juice/coffee station.
Cons: -The day we checked in, the hotel was having power issues. Not less than an hour after we arrived, the power went out for 7 hours which meant no air conditioning, fan, lights, or running water. After traveling all day, we were miserable and hot.
-Despite having an AC and fan, the rooms never got quite cold enough to battle the heat.
-The shower temperature fluctuations were insane. Even if you had it right in the middle setting, it would randomly turn to scalding hot to freezing cold.
THE BIGGEST CON:
As many people know, Sosua is a hotbed for prostitution and despite the hotel’s policies assuring that “outside guests are strictly forbidden”, that didn’t seem to actually be upheld. Several male guests (about 4 of them staying in different rooms) engaged in hiring prostitutes and bringing them onto the property and then loudly, i mean practically yelling, about their experiences with the prostitutes. It felt very uncomfortable and gross and I wish the hotel would have kicked them out. If we would have brought our children on this trip, we would have promptly left the hotel because of this. They also smoked weed on their patios.
Most of the restaurants nearby also felt inaccessible because of how sketchy and dangerous the locale and neighborhood seemed. We walked to a store and to a restaurant and determined we weren’t going to do that again.
All in all, our stay was pleasant but it could have been much better, but we really did appreciate the staff’s friendliness.
