28 Best Things to Do in Barcelona

"Built in the 1880s as a summerhouse for stockbroker Manel Vicens, Casa Vicens was the very first house Gaudí designed. Forget the Gaudí of La Sagrada Família fame, this is his Orientalist Period. Imagine a Moorish palace merged with a Rubik’s cube. It’s crazy. Anyone who’s a fan of tiles or maximalist design will geek out on the oriental palms, pink walls, flower-adorned tiles and flying birds. Add in a terracotta roof terrace, a couple of elaborate domes, and some Gaudí ironwork and you’re left wondering how it all harmonizes together. Because, weirdly, it does." - Gemma Askham

If you’re in Barcelona and want to truly immerse yourself in the local culture, Casa Vicens is a must-visit. This was Gaudí’s first major work, and the architecture is absolutely stunning, vibrant, detailed, and unlike anything else. I went on a public holiday and, surprisingly, the place was nearly empty, which made the experience even more special. It gave me the perfect chance to explore at my own pace and take amazing photos without the crowds. The audio guide is available via your phone and really enhances the visit, offering great insight into the history and design of the house. Highly recommend adding this gem to your Barcelona itinerary!

Google
Wonderful piece of architecture and Gaudi’s first significant work. It looks absolutely magical, like something from a movie. The ticket price is quite steep at 20 something euros per person, but I still believe it’s worth it. You get audio guide on your phone which explains everything you need to know.

Google
The architecture is beautiful and it is so much less crowded than other Gaudí's attractions. There wasn't even a queue to go in. I would definitely recommend it to others. The only drawback is that it's located far away from everything else, but obviously it can't be changed.

Incredible visit. Our guide was excellent and gave and showed details that can only be appreciated with a tour guide. Architectural design of the house is genius taking into consideration nature and structure. Truely awesome experience. Spend 2 hrs there. Shop has some unique gifts and souvenirs . Highly recommended

Google
A beautiful example of Gaudi’s work. The colours of the tiling, the ceilings and walls all exquisite. I enjoyed the rooftop too. The audio explanation of each room was excellent and the staff were most helpful. We went at 6.00pm and there were no queues. Highly recommend this attraction.

To be honest, I like Gaudi‘s early works more. I was expecting to see the real traces of life, but the interior was basically empty. I like the design of the interior and the ceiling very much. The cafe inside is very beautiful.

Gaudí once said artists don’t need monuments because their work is the monument—and this place totally proves that. It’s so cool to see something this artistic that was actually someone’s home. I'm glad it’s been kept in such great shape. Definitely worth a visit!

Google
Casa Vicens Gaudi is a must for architecture lovers, but may not have enough to rationalize the entry fee for a non-architecture tourist. It was 22 euros per person, purchased at the door. The first two floors, which had some of the original Gaudi work is extraordinary. The rest of the museum is much more contemporary and has scale models of other buildings. It would be nice if the rooftop had a little more too it (it seems like it may have a garden in the past).

Yelp
This was Gaudi's first major commission, and it is mind boggling in the details. We were not able to get tickets at other Gaudi locations, but I feel like this was a good choice--not crowded, manageable size, and contextual information about Gaudi's contemporaries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There is a self tour--honestly the voice recording was a little grating, so we had one person in the group read from the text from theirs. The information is a must because there are otherwise very few placards identifying the rooms or highlighting details. The gift shop had lots of tempting stuff, much of it made in Barcelona.

Yelp
Just so you know, I hate the word "Oriental" especially if someone calls me one. I ain't a rug, OK? However, it's acceptable to call the architectural style Antoni Gaudi used in the design of his first house as Oriental. The building has a Persian/Moroccan flavor with the constant use of decorative tiles, illustrated ceilings, and Moorish arches. It's not my favorite Gaudi building, not by a long shot, but it's a good starter course if you have time. It's up in the quieter Gracia neighborhood away from the crowds at the other Gaudi landmarks, but it's worth the trek. The grounds are unique in integrating the interior and exterior elements into a seamless picture of nature. There's a heavy dose of exotic Asian flair (...hey, I didn't say Oriental) in the ridged framing, the shape of the eaves, and the rampant idiosyncratic decorative touches. The rooftop is relatively modest for Gaudi, but this is where he started after all. Yelp
The house was built between 1883-1885 and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. I did a self-guided visit and used my phone to guide me through the various rooms. I admired the facade of the house and how there are aspects of nature inside/outside. I enjoyed my experience here as it wasn't as crowded as the other Gaudi buildings. I was able to take my time.

Yelp
Decided last minute to go and able to get tickets. Very cool, great audio tour but I was disappointed that there was no furniture in the rooms. The rooftop view is awesone. The Gaudi historical info and his design are def worth the visit. I enjoyed Casa Mila more but still enjoyed today's.

Yelp
If you're into unique architecture and wanting to know a bit more about Gaudi's history within Barcelona, highly recommend booking a reservation for a tour here. It takes about an hour or so but you then have time to roam the house as long as you'd like and take as many pictures as you want. Offer tours in English, Spanish and Chinese you do need a reservation for the tour. This is a nice alternative experience if you're not able to get tickets for Park Güell.

Yelp
We just bought tickets as we arrived. The house is one of the smaller ones, should take about 1.5 hrs or less. It's still worth checking out but the cost of admission should be less. Employees were all nice. Not very crowded.

Yelp
Gaudi's first house design is an extravagant and stunning example of his work with an exceptionally fine interior restoration. Not too crowded even on the weekend and a delight for anyone who loves architecture.

Yelp
Casa Vicens is the first masterpiece of Gaudi and sowed the seeds of later works. Built between 1883 & 1885 as a summer house for the Vicens family, he showcased his unparalleled talent. This home is a Unesco Heritage site.

Yelp
This was a nice surprise! I found it yesterday when I knew we couldn't see Palau Guell on Monday because it is closed. We went today. It is a block and a half from the Fontana (green line) metro. We paid 20.50 Euros each to enter. It is Gaudi's first house that he was a part of. We were able to buy tickets and audio guide on your phone when we arrived. Bring headphones. They do have English and Spanish tours if you plan ahead. It was so nice to go and not have to fight a crowd! They have a cafe there as well and you pay 1 Euro to store your backpack. Thank you for restoring this home and opening it in 2017!!!

Yelp
I had heard a few weeks ago that Casa Vicens was opening to the public for the first time ever about a week before my visit to Barcelona so of course I had to stop by. The entry to the house is €16 but for only €3 extra you can have a guided visit, which was totally worth it. I booked my tour online before traveling, which made it a lot easier. They do tours in Catalán, Spanish, and English. I booked the English tour only because of the time was more convenient, but since everyone in our group spoke Spanish the guide did the tour in Spanish instead, which made it even better. The guide was quick to explain they had just opened for tours a week prior, so if anyone had any feedback to make the tour better to please let him know. In all, I thought it was great! He was very nice and knowledgeable about the history of the house and of Gaudí as well. The house was restored very well and they have a small area for an interactive museum and a gift shop in the basement. Other Gaudí houses are much more popular, but this one seemed like a very different experience, and not as crowded yet. Definitely recommended as a stop in Barcelona!

Yelp
Cutest house ever! Must come see this if you're a fan of Gaudi and love architecture. Every room has its own uniqueness in it and it is so well designed. I love the patterns in each room. My favorite room will have to be the smoking room. I love the patio and also the small balcony in one of the rooms upstairs. I was so fascinated and adored this house so much. Would love to have a summer beach house like this. I definitely recommend coming to check this house out.

Yelp
Another one of Gaudi's UNESCO World Heritage masterpieces. Due to the covid it was closed to visits, but still we got to enjoy the playfulness visible from the outside. As my daughter had stated it..it's like we stepped inside of Alice in the Wonderland book.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Gaudi masterpieces! It's gorgeous from the entrance to the cafe and in every part of the house. The textiles are intricate and the colors are rich. I came on a weekday around noon to find the place relatively quiet which was great for photographs. The lack of crowds also allowed me to take in what each room of the casa had to offer. There's even a terrace which provides some awesome views of the city. Casa Vicens is gorgeous and should definitely be added to your Barcelona sites list! Yelp
An amazing look at Gaudis home. The design of this building is just something you have to experience in person. We did not do the tour, but just seeing it was a great experience.

Yelp
Casa Vicens was 4 of 7 sites I visited created by Antoni Gaudi. The highlight of my trip in Barcelona was seeing Antoni Gaudi's creations. His architecture is so creative and you are just sucked into it. Vicens was like staring at a life size gingerbread house. Awesome whimsical design. The green and red colors were nice. Again, everything was super symmetrical and lined up perfectly. The square white/green trim was unique. Smaller of the stand alone buildings I saw by Gaudi but there was a metal balcony and gates. I liked the open balcony design.

Yelp
I just visited the Park Güell and was wandering around this area. And just saw the Casa Vicens quite close to me on the map. So I decided to have a look of this plave. Too bad for me, when I was here, the place was in construction. I only got a look of the one side of the building. It looked the whole place will be under construction for awhile. Well, even just a small corner. It still looks pretty. I might visit this place again, next time when I am in Barcelona again.

Yelp
Recently open Casa Vicen, it the least crowded attraction of all the Gaudi's work in Barcelona. It's a summer home for an industrialist complete with shutters and spider web fountain. Be sure to ask the local guide for explanation. The rooftop terrace is worth a visit, so is the souvenir store in the basement.

Yelp
Another Gaudi Gem-Beautiful exterior and interior. It is all in the details. It was so nice to see the house without masses of people. Really enjoyed the taking time to enjoy the ambiance, architectural details, and garden. The seats on the terrace and porch were so comfortable as expected. Clearly he was trying several techniques in this one house that he would later use in his other ones. You could see the influence of his travels and his observations from nature. Really enjoyed the video how the house was restored painstakingly by experts. There is a Hofmann cafe there, which has an absolutely delicious mascarpone croissant you have to try!
