Not only was the Casa do Visconde de Chanceleiros the highlight of our three week trip to Portugal, it is one of the very best experiences my wife and I have had in over 30 years of global travel. From the spectacular setting to the wonderful facilities, spectacular nightly dinners and an amazing staff, this is one of the most enjoyable places we have ever stayed. Ursula graciously shares her sprawling country home and Adelaide and Ana make sure that everything is just as it should be. The restaurant deserves special mention. The nightly feasts prepared by Chef Isabel are gourmet - locally sourced ingredients for traditional specialties with local wines as accompaniment. Andreia's breakfasts were scrumptious. Adelaide arranged for a private tour of the excellent winery next door. We cannot wait to go back. Highly, highly recommended.

Casa do Visconde de Chanceleiros - it’s worth coming to Portugal just to stay here. Beautiful setting high in the hills above Pinhau with amazing river and vineyard views. Our room, which was massive, had a huge private patio overlooking the pool and surrounding hills. Fantastic breakfast is included with the stay. We ate dinner in the dining room both nights - why go anywhere else - meals were fantastic. Quaint bar (they work on an honour system so you just write down what you take and it gets added to your bill) and games room, pool, hot tub, tennis court on site. Owner and staff are super helpful with booking river cruises, wine tastings in the area and anything you need. We traveled around Portugal for 3 weeks and this was by far our favorite experience. The hairpin curvy road up from Pinhau is worth it. Stay here!

This is our 6th visit to this wonderful idyllic paradise in the Douro. From the moment you arrive it’s pure relaxation. Wonderful staff and Ursula certainly runs a fantastic place with Adelaide and Anna. Spotlessly clean everywhere, and everything you need. Dinner is always a treat and with the best views. We will be back next year already booked. Always sad to leave this amazing place.

If you’re looking for an enchanting experience with impeccable food, wine, service, views and gorgeous rooms, this is your place. The breakfast and dinners are delicious, everyone who works here is so kind and the owner, Ursula, is lovely and welcoming. Her two bulldogs are the cutest little meatballs and add to the charm. We stayed in the junior suite and the views from the patio are to die for. You can walk to a few wineries from here or just relax onsite and enjoy the pool, tennis, billiards, movies, great wines, etc. Definitely walk to Quinta Formigosa for a tasting and tour.

Casa do Visconde de Chanceleiros is a gorgeous 18th Century Manor House in the Douro Valley just above the town of Pinhao with stunning views of the surrounding vineyards on the terraced mountainsides. We immediately felt at home welcomed by Ursula and her friendly staff. Our Deluxe Room D on the property of the estate had two stories with amazing vineyard views surrounding us and plenty of room for our family of 3 adults. Don't forget your bathing suits for the large inviting swimming pool to cool off and relax. We do not always swim, but enjoyed the pool both days we were there. We highly recommend booking dinner at Casa do Visconde as the tables face the windows with the best vineyard view around! They treat you like royalty, and it is much easier than getting into the crowds in Pinhao. The delicious courses paired with local wine and port is an experience to remember! We even had Veggie Gazpacho Soup included and Molotov, a baked meringue bundt cake, for dessert. We could not pass up the opportunity to eat there our second night! The breakfast in the morning was also delicious including meats, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, pancakes, waffles, eggs, and homemade orange juice. Don't hesitate to book here for a wonderful memorable stay in the Douro Valley. It would even be easy to take the train or boat from Porto and get a short taxi ride up to it from Pinhao. Thank you so much for your hospitality! Only wish we had more time to stay!

Very unassuming when pulling into the parking but once inside and through to the gardens, pool area and finally our superior garden room, we were awestruck. This stunning oasis was more than we expected. The staff were always helpful and professional but the property was magical. Our room had a patio that was covered in grapevines and flowers and views that are some of the most beautiful we’ve ever seen. |Your gardeners work hard to maintain such a magnificent property. The breakfasts were nice and the port was welcoming. ||Thank you for making our first entry into Portugal special and memorable.

Where do I even find the words to describe this place. Ursula and her hard-working staff have truly created a small piece of paradise in the beautiful Douro Valley. Our family of 4 only spent two nights here, but wish we could spend the rest of our Portugal vacation in this retreat. You can tell the team here really loves what they are doing and every single flower, every stone, everything reflects that love. Their gardens are immaculate, the gorgeous pool was so refreshing on hot days, their rooms are super clean, the beds very comfortable with soft and luxurious linens. The bottle of port in our room was a nice touch too. Their homemade dinners are the best and the menu changes daily, so don’t think twice and dine here. And how can I forget the welcoming Rosy & Lilly - bulldogs that live on the property. They greet you when you arrive and keep you company at dinner. We all absolutely fell in love with this unique place. They don’t advertise heavily and rely on word of mouth, so if you learned about this place, consider yourself extremely lucky to have found it and book it ASAP! We can’t wait to be back and tell our friends and family to visit.

When we arrived this true paradise, our breath was taken away by the beauty and quietness! I can't imagine a more beautiful setting or location for a peaceful getaway! Look at my attached photos and you will understand!||This is the first time for many years that we have stayed in the same hotel for more than 4 days. We spend 5 days here and could have been here for another week. This hidden gem is also placed in the best part of the Douro Valley. We were driving around in the valley every day and I am sure that this is the most beautiful area.||Our Deluxe room (room no. S) is probably the best room in the hotel. The room is well appointed and spacious, equipped with everything you could want and a beautiful view of the wine yards and hills around. The room and rest of the hotel was spotless cleaned every day. The room had a very efficient air-conditioning. The only thing I miss was a small refrigerator in room for cooling the drinking water.| |The pool area with loungers was wonderful and never felt busy even when the 15 or so other guests were nearby! The honesty bar in the pool area was such a fantastic idea meaning you could go and get drinks and snacks whenever you liked.||A set evening meal is on offer every day at a very reasonable price. The food, served on the lovely terrace/dining room, was prepared from local produce and very tasty so you don’t have to leave this Paradise for dinner in the evening.||A huge congratulation to the owner and rest of the team at Casa do Visconde! Keep up the amazing job as you guys are making your clientele happy, relaxed, and special!||As a person who travels a lot; Believe me, you can’t fail to enjoy this wonderful place!||Regards|Svein-Magne Tunli from Bergen, Norway.

Yelp
If you are going to the Douro Valley, do not hesitate. Book Chanceleiros as quickly as possible. This was simply one of the most amazing properties we've ever seen. The grounds are beautiful, including the pool, the dining room, and our own casita with stunning views over the valley. The exceptional hosts bend over backwards to ensure you have everything you need. I recommend having dinner there at least once. However, you can also bring in a picnic from town (5 minutes away by taxi or rental car) to eat on your private terrace. The host's also recommended a wonderful boat tour and a tour of a port house that included a bus ride to a dizzying height with the most incredible views. Ursula and her staff are just beautiful people.

Yelp
The brusque, dismissive service we received here soured an experience that could have easily been extraordinary. My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights, in a "superior room" with a view. First, the good: the grounds and the room were both absolutely stunning. The room was way more spacious than I expected, and had two patios (including a very private one overlooking the valley), a fireplace, and big corner tub large enough for two. The breakfast surprisingly had every option you would want, from eggs made to order to croissants, fruit and cereal, and the food we had at dinner was great. The first disappointment was the response I got when I asked about the hot tub, which was the deciding factor in why I chose this place over the many others in the Duoro Valley. We were looking forward to using the hot tub and sauna in the evenings, and found upon our arrival that the hot tub was cold. We were told that the temperature of the tub "depended on the sun" (we didn't understand what that meant, and was given no further clarification), and that we couldn't use it at night. We were a little disheartened, but still excited about our stay, until we got to dinner. We opted to have dinner there on our first night, since it's a 10-minute taxi ride to the nearest restaurant. Dinner was served at 8 pm (and only 8 pm), and included 3 courses with wine for €38 per person, which is a very steep price in Portugal. The food was delicious though, and the portions were very large, so were fine with the price. We hardly made a dent in our arroz con pato, so we asked the owner nicely if we could save it for later. She said no, because it would attract ants into our room (even though there a bottle of sweet port in each room, and of course no policy against bringing food into your room). Since they had a large kitchen, we asked if they could save it for us to have for lunch the next day. Again, no. The next morning at breakfast, my boyfriend tried to order eggs for me, and the chef simply said no. Wtf?? When we checked out, we asked the owner to call us a taxi, and she summoned the chef to place the call for her. Ten minutes later, a taxi van comes, but another couple was also waiting for a taxi, so we weren't sure whose it was. Since we were all going to the train station, we thought it might just be one large taxi for all of us. The driver loaded our luggage, and as we were getting in, the chef comes outside, and starts to rudely *yell* at us to get out of the taxi and wait for the next one. Again, wtf?? We couldn't figure out why we received such unwelcoming service here, especially compared to how well other guests were treated. Was it because we were the youngest people there? Was it because I'm brown (and he's white)? Was it because we're Americans? Whatever the reason, I was expecting better treatment (indifferent but polite would've been just fine), especially since this was by far the most upscale place we stayed in Portugal.

Yelp
If youre seeking an incredible splurge, in a gorgeous location, with absolutely amazing scenery along with many glasses of included port, you've found the place. Even during the early spring/off-season, the Casa is splendid with lush gardens bursting awake in the brisk spring sunshine. The hills of the Valley are bright green and lush and the birds are chirping their happy melody. Far off, a rooster, symbol of Portugal, crows. Molly, the owner's English Bulldog, grunts when she sees you, but all the while staying perched in the frigid swimming pool. Yes, the price is a wee bit skyward of what you'd typically pay in Portugal, but the simple luxuries are well worth it, in my opinion. My only regret? Not staying more than one night ....next time ....
