Founded in 1895, Casa Vives is now a 4th generation Barcelona patisseria and bomboneria with this 2nd location serving the bread that made it famous plus a wide variety of tempting sweet little pastries, pies, cakes, cookies, chocolates, and truffles.
The coffee shop and cafe isn't huge, but the selection is. It took me over 10 minutes to choose because Casa Vives has huge family desserts all the way down to individual sizes just for you. Oh, Casa Vives, why you have to tempt me so?
If I lived nearby, I'd be at Casa Vives every week to try something new and sweet ... and I wouldn't be alone ... because Casa Vives was packed with locals doing the same. They were here because it was Thursday while I was jumping around trying to take pictures of everything while asking about each pastry like it might be the last sweet I ever jam in my mouth.
I finally settled on a Cappuccino and two afternoon snacks. A gorgeous Tartaleta de llimona (Lemon Pie) with Lemon Cream and Meringue dollops (crema de llimona amb merenga) was like me: tart and sweet. An even fruitier and chocolatey-rich choice was a Victoria Chocolate Cake with chocolate mousse with mango confit and passion fruit (mousse de xocolata amb confitura de mango i fruita de la passió).
Casa Vives may not be the most popular patisserie in Barcelona, but the tempting chocolates, cakes, tarts, and more mean it just might reach that status after squeaking by for 125 years.
