‼️ We were robbed while staying at this hotel in Cairns last December.
It's been a while since the incident, but we’ve received no updates, compensation, or accountability from anyone involved — not the hotel, not Booking.com, and not even the police. So I’ve decided to speak up and warn others.
We booked a 6-night stay via Booking.com. When we arrived in the afternoon, there was no receptionist — we had to collect our key from a mailbox. The room was large but stuffy and outdated. What shocked me most was that the lights, fans, and TV were already switched on when we entered. It felt like someone had just been in the room. I felt unsafe and check if any cleaners were still inside — but no one was.
We stayed there without issue until the fifth night. After returning from a day out, we left our bags on the living room counter and went to bed. The next morning, we couldn’t find my partner’s crossbody bag or my purse (which I always keep in my handbag). That’s when we realised we had been robbed while we were sleeping.
The stolen bags contained our passports, IDs, cash, valuables — and even the room key.
We checked the door — it was still locked from the inside, which should’ve made it impossible for anyone to enter. When we reported the theft to the receptionist (who was finally working that morning), he said someone might have come in through the terrace. We hadn’t even used the outdoor terrace before, but when we checked, we found the sliding door wide open behind the curtains.
That’s when we realised that the balcony faced a public street — hidden behind a tightly fenced area. Some of the fencing was broken, but we couldn’t tell if it had always been like that, or if someone broke in the night before.
We asked the hotel to check the CCTV — but it was useless. They only had cameras inside the lobby and one pointing at the front entrance. Nothing covered the outdoor area or our room, which was right next to the street. If the hotel cared about guest safety, they would’ve installed proper surveillance.
The hotel gave us the police contact, and we reported the incident online. But they took two weeks to come and check the site! Since then, no progress has been made.
The hotel took no responsibility at all. We were their paying customers, sleeping in their room when it happened. If something worse had happened — if someone had been hurt — would they still claim no responsibility?
We’ve heard people say Cairns can be unsafe, but this really shows how vulnerable tourists can be. If you're not even safe in your own locked hotel room, where can you feel safe?
Booking.com was no help either. They offered no protection, no support, no compensation. Compared to Airbnb’s policies, it’s clear Booking.com doesn’t care about guests’ rights.
The police were just as disappointing. They delayed their response, did not investigate properly, and never followed up.
Months passed. No updates from anyone.
Then, this year, my partner randomly checked his Facebook message requests — and a kind stranger had messaged him saying he found his bag near his house. We're thankful he at least got the bag back, even though everything valuable was gone. My purse is still missing, and with it, irreplaceable family film photos that meant the world to me.
This post is not just a review — it's a warning. Please be careful, especially if you're a tourist unfamiliar with the area. Even in your hotel room, you’re not always safe. And if something happens, don’t expect much help from hotels, Booking.com, or even the police.
Cairns and this hotel became a painful memory for us. 😔😔
