This Scuba Diving Spot Was Just Named No. 1 in the U.S.—Here's What It's Like

"This popular dive site is the nation's first nonprofit underwater park: a compact, 2.5-acre marine-protected area where marine life is notably comfortable around people. Shallow kelp fronds and sheltered spots make it ideal for close encounters with species like garibaldi and provide accessible conditions for both novice and experienced divers." - Acacia Gabriel

Great place to spend time while in Avalon. Snorkeling, SCUBA, and a lot of Garibaldi orange fish. Great opportunity to take good underwater footage, pretty easy for SCUBA, enjoyable for snorkeling, but sometimes the currents can be strong. Rentals for SCUBA or snorkeling gear is sort of pricey, as should be since one pays for the convenience. If you have your own SCUBA gear bring it, just rent the tank. You can have your SCUBA equipment transported from the harbor to the casino. Overall, a great place, and a lot of nice people around.

A beautiful place for beginner snorkelers to take a dip. It is free to jump in but I would suggest visitors get a wetsuit nearby as the water is cool year round.

Very nice scuba park. Dive shop located right on site. You can rent all your gear or bring your own and just get tanks refilled.

Best dive spot in Southern California! Took my friend here visiting from South Carolina and he was fascinated by the Kelps Forrest and the clear visibility. It’s also very convenient transiting to the dive spot, really close to get your tank fill and plenty of choices to eat/drink after the dives at the island. We commute through Catalina Express departed out in Long Beach 6 and finished the day with 3 dives. I highly recommend visiting this spot.

Best place to snorkel or dive for free right in Avalon, a short bike ride or nice walk from the ferry landing. Stairs lead right into the water and public showers are available on the way back into town, or you can go over to Descanso Beach and use theirs. We saw so many beautiful fish with just our snorkel gear, similar to Lovers Cove, but without the glass-bottom boats coming by and making you move out of the way all the time.

Beautiful spot where you can look at Catalina, watch scuba diving, snorkeling or the bright orange fish. We didn't make it inside, next time!

I love free diving here as the visibility is impossible to beat. On the clearest days it's over 40 ft. The kelp forest make for an unreal landscape filled with fish big and small. Always fun to be free diving and to wave at the bubblers. You are able to rent gear on the island but I prefer to bring my own

First time diving Catalina. Rented entire scuba package from the little trailer right by the stairs into the water. Saw the underwater at exhibit, swam through the Kelp forest and marveled at the Garibaldi and sheepshead. Will definitely be back... 😉
