Four friends and I stayed at Casitas Tenorio for three nights at the end of a 10-day Costa Rica trip. After tourist-oriented Tamarindo and La Fortuna, the Casitas was a breath of fresh air. The individual casitas are very much in the rain forest, and you can observe birds, monkeys and other wildlife right from your porch. The property is located in the town of Bijagua, which has two grocery stores, some restaurants and cafes, and a brewery, but is otherwise not overly commercialized. We enjoyed having breakfast in the main buildings every morning, where we could watch various birds and take in the natural surroundings. Each day the breakfast menu was different with many of the ingredients coming from the farm on the property. Our casita, Casa del Bosque, was spacious and well equipped with a microwave, small fridge, utensils, mugs and plates. During our stay here we went to the Tenorio Vulcan national park (about a 20-minute drive), took a night jungle tour in Tapir Valley (about 15 minutes away) and walked to the nearby Heliconias Lodge and hiked on their hanging bridge trail. We ate several times at Cafe La Semilla, which had good vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. The service here was excellent, and the property manager, Nana and her husband, Jeffrey, were eager to help with whatever we needed. They can help schedule tours and give advice for things to do and places to eat, Each Casita and the main building have many booklets with information about the areas, activities, and the property’s history. Don’t miss the morning farm tour, especially if you have kids!
