Castanheiro Boutique Hotel

We very much enjoyed our recent stay in this hotel situated in the heart of Funchal. On check in, we received a glass of Madeira. Our de luxe room with a balcony was large, although the furniture was functional rather than luxurious. Breakfast was very good with an à la carte menu available, as well as the hot and cold buffet; there was a good choice of fresh fruit which varied from day to day. We enjoyed the happy hour in the bar on a couple of occasions. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We would happily return.

This is a lovely hotel tucked away in a quiet street in central Funchal. If like us you prefer smaller hotels with great service, you are in for a treat. Excellent facilities and choice of breakfast, very welcoming staff, Lila in particular always had a smile on her face. Highly recommended - we will return (If you are renting a car, please note the hotel is using two car parks. We used the one 20m past the hotel in the disused grounds of a building - you enter through a fairly tight left turn into gates where the man is in the attached Google Street View photo but it’s easily manageable with lots of places to park through the passageway. We didn’t use the underground car park)

A beautiful hotel right in the middle of the old town, down a quiet street. The location is perfect for exploring Funchal. The staff and the level of service was outstanding. Even though it is a boutique hotel it has every you would need including lovely outdoor pool, a heated indoor pool, a spa, a fabulous restaurant and a bar. Breakfast was a buffet with lots of selection but you could also order freshly cooked items. The restaurant served some amazing food in the evening. The hotel was immaculately maintained. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and we really couldn’t fault it.

We love returning to Castanheiro Boutique Hotel at Christmas and experiencing the welcoming warmth from the Reception Team. ||Reception area decoration is always stylish and festive and a great area for a Christmas Eve photographs.||The service from hotel staff is why we return every year. Each and every team member looks after guests so well and are a credit to the hotel. Behind the scenes a lot of planning and organising ensure the hotel keeps it's excellent ratings.||Our room this year didn't disappoint and had every comfort we needed. A large, spacious room with lots of storage, comfortable bed, spacious bathroom with large shower area and quality toiletries, a separate powerful hairdryer instead of one attached to the wall, a full length mirror, tea and coffee making facilities and a lovely balcony. We asked for different pillows and they were provided no problem at all.||Breakfast is always plentiful and varied and also has a cooked to order menu which includes various egg dishes. Every year I always looked forward to my first morning and ordering the crepe with warm sauted fruit and a dusting of cinnamon. I recommend topping with some yogurt!||The bar has a 2 for 1 Happy Hour from 6-7pm and is an ideal way to start your evening. Drinks quality is excellent and Carlos makes the best g&t's in Funchal😁||The location of the hotel is ideally situated on a quiet street but only a short walk from the Cathedral, promenade, shops and restaurants.||We are always sad to leave our home away from home and once again thank everyone at Castanheiro for your welcome, warmth, and friendliness. We look forward to seeing you in December and once again experiencing Feliz Natal at Castanheiro!

This was our 8th stay at the Castanheiro and definitely won't be our last! ||All the staff on reception are brilliant. Shout out to Andreia, David, Claudia, Sandra (to mention a few)) are so welcoming and friendly! Very efficient housekeeping staff and the bar staff and breakfast staff are all very friendly and helpful! too. All are indeed a credit to the hotel!||The breakfast options are fantastic! There are plenty of hot and cold buffet items as well as an a la carte menu, i.e. omelettes, pancakes etc. etc. Lovely variations of fresh juices, prosecco, pastries - the list goes on! ||Plenty of sunbeds around the pool.||Location is perfect, very central to Old Town Funchal, but at the same time in a very quiet street.||We cannot fault this hotel!

We first visited the Castanheiro in 2023 and loved the hotel. One of my wife's bucket list items was to be in Madeira for the New Years Eve (NYE) celebrations and firework display, so as a surprise 60th birthday present I booked a return visit to the Castanheiro and they didn't disappoint us.||Before the trip I had been in contact with Andreia who did a great job in arranging some little surprise touches in the room for me, flowers, chocolates and fizz. The flowers were perfect some thanks again Andreia.||The hotel was just as good as before, the staff are wonderful and pleasant, the service throughout our stay was excellent and the food in the restaurant was delightful. There are too many people to name individually but I must thank them all for making my wife's birthday celebration so wonderful.||The NYE at the hotel was a memorable evening. The hotel had a formal dress gala dinner, which was attended by around 200 people and given the size of the event the food and service was excellent. After the dinner we were taken to the hotel rooftop to see in the new year with glasses of fizz. The hotel rooftop is a perfect place to view the firework display and luckily the unseasonal rain cleared so we had a great all round view as the display was spectacular. After the display we were back in the gala venue for more food, drinks and a DJ to celebrate the night away (this would have been on the hotel roof had the weather been better). The event was very well organised and from our point of view a great success. If you visit Madeira and Funchal especially for new year we would definitely recommend the Castanheiro.||The whole 5 night trip was a wonderful way to end my wife's birthday celebrations, apart from the unseasonable rainy weather but that is beyond anyone's control. Thanks again for the Castanheiro and its staff for making our celebration special.

What an amazing hotel. From the moment we arrived, where we were greeted with a glass of Madeira wine, during and after we checked out, it was a lovely experience. The hotel is located in a perfect location for the old town, where you could access everything Funchal has to offer. We stayed bed and breakfast, which was excellent. Great food choices and freshly cooked eggs to order, lots of hot food choices, cold meat, cheeses, fresh fruit, yoghurts and gorgeous cakes!! You could eat a leisurely breakfast which kept you going until dinner time. Our room overlooked the courtyard was so peaceful. Lovely bed, bathroom where toiletries were provided every day, great housekeeping service, lots of English language channels as well as a small cooking area - if you were so inclined - which we were not!!! There’s the Iris Bar for pre or post dinner drinks, which was lovely as well as a nice courtyard area. Will definitely return to Funchal and will stay here again. Thanks to everyone for a great experience 😊😊

We had a wonderful stay at the Castanheiro Boutique Hotel. The location is absolutely brilliant—right in the centre of town with everything within easy reach, yet tucked away just enough to offer peace and quiet. It’s a short, pleasant walk down to the seafront, making it ideal for exploring.|The hotel itself is spotless and beautifully maintained. Our room was spacious with a lovely big bed that made for a very comfortable stay. What really stood out, though, was the staff. From reception to restaurant to housekeeping, everyone was warm, cheerful, and genuinely helpful—nothing was too much trouble.|All in all, a fantastic place to stay. We’d happily return and recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing, well-located base in Madeira.

This is a beautiful hotel in a great location that is central to many top destinations around the historic city of Funchal. I would definitely go back, and my experience was clearly very different than previous reviewers. We stayed at Castanheiro for a week, and were very happy to take advantage of an extremely generous (and free/included with your booking) breakfast that ranged from buffet-style hot and cold options to made-to-order crepes and eggs. The restaurant is great, and so are the two bars on site. The hotel also has nice programs available to guests, including rooftop happy hours and live music multiple days a week. The rooms were modern, clean and had all the amenities we needed for a long term stay. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, as well as helpful getting information, securing taxis, and connecting with the excellent spa on location. All in all, a fantastic hotel for an unforgettable visit.

Ordered a cappuccino at the bar and it was not at all as you would expect. Coffee with whipped cream. Very odd to replace milk foam in such a way. However, nice and easy background music and service was fine besides this misunderstood order.

Rooms are large, but have no charm and have very limited clarity due to small windows (we were on the 1st floor). The hotel is extremely noisy in the morning (water in pipes, elevators,...), so don't expect lazy mornings. Laundry is just a daylight robbery (it costed us 45 € for 10 T-shirts and underwears). Restaurant is good and not too expensive, but clearly "overplaying". The Breakfast is OK. The hot tub is not exactly hot. The only top-spot is the roof-deck. In a nutshell, not completely bad, but clearly disappointing and not up to my expectation.
