Admission costs €5. There are no furnished rooms to visit, but there may be temporary exhibitions inside. From the upper terrace, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the Strait of Messina and Mount Etna. The visit, including the external tour of the walls, lasts about an hour.
The castle is believed to have been initially built around the 6th century AD, but reliable information about it begins around the 11th century AD. Over the centuries, it was conquered and modified by the Ostrogoths, Lombards, Byzantines, Normans, Angevins and Aragonese, the latter of whom gave it its current name. Other kingdoms succeeded one another in the following centuries.
Despite the fact that the massive original towers had withstood the earthquake of 1908 well, some proposed its demolition. However, only partial demolition was carried out, and restoration and reconstruction work began only forty years ago.
