Castello Di Monterone, a Design Boutique Hotel Perugia, Italy

"On a hill overlooking the green valley between Assisi and Perugia, Castello Di Monterone takes its name from the area where it is located. It features a restaurant with a panoramic terrace. The first reference to the castle was discovered in Perugia’s historic archives in a document dating back to the 13th-century. This historic establishment is now a comfortable hotel. Guests can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a tranquil, relaxing environment both inside and outside the castle walls. At Castello Di Monterone, guests can enjoy peace and quiet in the cozy library, or socialize in front of the fireplace in one of 2 lounges. The hotel’s spa includes a sauna, Turkish bath and a swimming pool with a hydro-massage corner. In the evenings, guests can relax under the stars and enjoy the city lights of Perugia’s ancient skyline." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

Hotel Castello di Monterone (Perugia, Umbria) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Just outside of Perugia, on the “via regalis” or royal road to Assisi, stands a 13th-century castle whose medieval atmosphere makes it a one-of-a-kind luxury boutique hotel. Hotel Castello di Monterone’s 18 rooms and suites add contemporary comfort to old stone walls and well-worn frescoes, and a swimming pool, sauna, and steam room are welcome additions as well. An outdoor terrace looks over the Umbrian countryside from the castle’s hilltop perch, and the hotel’s restaurant opens onto this view; its menu is surprisingly modern, as is the presentation, from the furnishings and artworks to the carefully composed plates." - Tablet Hotels

This is a treasure. An old castle set in the hills of Perugia, it is magical. The hallways and unique features of a castle have been left in their original state. The room we stayed in was compact but pretty. The views are just stunning, especially from the breakfast patio. While we did not have dinner there, the breakfasts are varied, with plenty of freshly baked goods, fresh fruit and good coffee. The staff for breakfast were kind and attentive. Would recommend for a getaway and peace and quiet!

A well restored real life castle with a beautiful view up at Perugia and down at the Tuscan Valley below. It’s worth going up to the roof to observe a view from the towers or to have an apertivo in the courtyard or to sit by the poo, or to enjoy a lovely meal at the restaurant with the same view. Breakfast included was also delicious. We stayed in Giota, a nice room with its own small patio on the side of the building near the pool and garden. The gardens were superbly landscaped and enjoyable to walk through. They do have parking. Perugia is a short drive, Assisi is a bit of a longer drive.

We were pleasantly surprised by our stay here. The castle is beautiful, the rooms are clean & updated, the bathrooms very nice. There is an elevator, but it’s fun finding your way around the many twist & turns. Not the easiest place if you are in a wheelchair.

What an amazing hotel! Arriving from the airport we caught sight of the most beautiful Castello and fell in love instantly. We stayed for 7 nights with our 7 year old daughter. Our room was large and well appointed, with amazing views towards Perugia and excellent air con. the surrounding gardens and vistas took our breath away throughout our stay. The staff were discreet but very professional and knowledgeable. Fab pool, sauna and steam room, hot tubs, use the phone by the pool and drinks appear at you sunbed. Outstanding restaurant with amazing staff. The chef took our daughter to the kitchen with chefs hat included. Absolutely love this place.

We had such a great time at Castello di Monterone. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful throughout our stay—always available and super welcoming. The service was excellent from start to finish.|Our room was spotless, the shower was fantastic, and everything felt very comfortable. The castle itself is beautiful and full of charm—it really feels like a special place. It’s also just a few minutes’ drive from the old town, which made exploring easy.|We also really enjoyed the restaurant. We tried the crocchette di patate, tartare di manzo al coltello, tagliolini al ragù, lasagna vegetariana, crema di pomodoro, and costolette di agnello. Everything was tasty and the restaurant staff were just as lovely as the rest of the team.|Breakfast was great too, with lots of choices and everything fresh. And on hot days, the swimming pool was a real treat.|All in all, a fantastic experience. We’d definitely love to come back.

A superb castle hotel. The owner is personable and very attentive. Excellent restaurant with views, inside and out seating with cover. Comfortable well supporting beds, crisp linen. Gardens have nook seating, pool is compact but adequate. Excellent value for money. You need a car. Access to Assisi is about 24 minutes. To Perugia 8 minutes. Park below town and get escalators up.

A striking venue. We were with an extension of a Viking cruise. On the last day, the group of us 14 were moved to give a standing ovation to the chef.

Gorgeous views from every angle. The food and service were great. Our room was spacious. They provided robes & slippers too. We also got to enjoy the hot tub & sauna; note they also had a beautiful pool and a steam room too.

Yelp
One of the most unique lodging experiences I've had anywhere in the world. Lovingly restored castle with odd corners to explore and details to discover. Can't beat the restaurant's deck for sunset views of Perugia. Tough to find but worth the effort.

Yelp
If you're staying in or near Perugia and you want to get away from the crowds of the city center, you can't do better than Castello di Monterone. Situated on the opposite side of the valley east of the city, along a ridge that separates Perugia from Ponte Valliceppi, the renovated castle is both a perfect spot for exploring Perugia and as a jumping off point for trips to Assisi, Spoleto, or wherever else in Umbria your fancy takes you. If you have a car, Perugia's city center is a short 5 to 10 minute drive, and taxi's can get you there for about EUR 12. The nighttime views of Perugia are stunning, and the castle itself could not be more charming with winding stairs that lead to rooms, balconies, and towers, in addition to the hearths, portals, and dungeons that you'd expect from a castle whose foundation was started in the 14th century. Although the rooms are not big, they are very comfortable, nicely appointed, and many have spectacular views of the Umbrian countryside. Try for a room on the western side of the castle for the best views. Finally, the hotel's on-site restaurant, Gradale, serves delicious Umbrian fare at what we considered to be very reasonable prices. Some of the better meals we had during a recent trip to Tuscany and Umbria were our meals at Gradale. All in all, our stay at Castello di Monterone was one of the most pleasant aspects of our recent vacation, and the hotel itself one of the best we've stayed in in recent memory.
