Castello di Tornano, Chianti, Italy - Explore & Book

"Think of Tuscany and you probably picture a romantic landscape of rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves, with fairytale castles sitting atop wooded hills. That’s Chianti in a nutshell. Now imagine yourself staying in one of these castles, enjoying delicious home cooking, locally-produced wine and lavishly furnished bedrooms. That’s the Castello di Tornano in a nutshell. This castle-hamlet is the country home of the Selvolini family, who for years have offered simple suites in the outhouses, and who more recently converted the main castle and tower to provide sumptuous guest rooms, including some fit-for-a-princess suites in the main tower. The surrounding countryside should inspire you to try some of the activities on offer: walks, tennis and cycling. If you’re feeling less energetic there is a swimming pool (unheated) built into the castle moat, plus a terrace where you can watch the sun set - ideally with one hand around your beloved and the other around a glass of Chianti. Highs A great sense of arrival, bumping through wooded hills to a rock-top castle - especially when it's lit up at night Very comfortable, historic accommodation, for both couples and families Lots to do in and around the estate - tennis, trekking, cycling, wine-tasting - while Siena is only 30 minutes away Really delightful staff, and a refreshingly down-to-earth atmosphere (not always the case in restored Tuscan castelli) Lovely meals using fresh ingredients produced on the estate, and the cooking lessons get rave reviews Lows You’ll need a car - the nearest village is 6km away Some bedrooms are dark and rather old-fashioned, while the sitting rooms feel rather formal (we can't imagine lounging there with a glossy magazine) The drive is a steep gravel track (can be tricky in winter) and the castle can be hard to find The dinner menu can be limited out of season, and (as often in Italy) the breakfast buffet is short on savouries" - Michael Cullen

We can not recommend this highly enough. If you are looking for a high class stay in the rural Tuscan countryside, with stunning views, good (produced on site) wine and Olive Oil and good food. This is THE place. We had a 2 day stay here, on our way into Siena. The staff are super attentive, and just wonderful. The property is well situated about an hour south of Florence, 25 minutes north of Siena and works incredibly well as a luxury and tranquil base, to explore the true heart of the Tuscan countryside and city day trips. The rooms on the website look lovely, but they are nothing compared to what they look like in person. And they are all well equipped with luxury touches and finishes. Pro tips for your visit - Ask them about their wine and olive oil production - 100%, eat at the restaurant - Head to the rooftop and watch the sun fall with the best view in Tuscany - Enjoy some time by the pool - Enjoy breakfast in their beautiful lemon tree courtyard. - Explore the local cities and countryside. I've been to Italy more times than I can remember, I'm half Italian and have family out this way. and this is my top tip for anyone wanting to experience a truly memorable, classy and authentic Tuscan experience.

Castello di Tornano is a truly beautiful place – a perfect blend of history, charm, and breathtaking views. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with the utmost kindness and professionalism. The staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was unforgettable. Their warmth and attention to detail made us feel right at home. The castle itself is magical, surrounded by the peace of the Tuscan countryside. Whether you’re relaxing in the gardens, enjoying a meal, or exploring the area, every moment feels special. I wholeheartedly recommend Castello di Tornano – 100% satisfaction guaranteed!

We travelled as 2 couples after a few days in Florence on our way to Sienna and included a one night stay in this intriguing castle vineyard and winery location. A fantastic addition to our Tuscan mini break especially having added a tasting menu with accompanying wines from their estate. Everything we experienced here was a delight; the castle and stunning scenery, the people, the food and, of course, the wine. We arrived to a warm welcome in time for our tasting and wine experience and were immediately shown to our rooms so that we could change for the lunch. A great and welcome touch as this was pre check-in time. Duccio, our host and a Sienna local, was very friendly and seemed as excited as us to guide us through the experience. His knowledge of wine and food was inspiring and his enthusiasm infectious. He made our visit feel so special - thank you 😊 The Tuscan dishes were superb and the castle's estate wines equally so. A great deal.of work on the vineyards has taken place in a few short years and the result already show and this vineyard's products will only grow in status. We enjoyed more wine into the evening as a local art group displayed their various works. How Tuscany was that! This is a must stop over between the 2 famous cities and we would urge you to take the opportunity to do so. Only a few tweaks needed in our view which we are happy to share but not significant to this review. We wish the English owners well in this fabulous venture.

If I could give the restaurant a one star I would. The hotel is great , reception staff awesome but the restaurant was less than mediocre. My husband ordered a med steak came out rare. I ordered the chicken it was all fat and bones, problem was we waited an hour and half to get the main course and the wait staff didn’t even come to check if we are enjoying the meal. We left the tip and walked out without trying the dessert …which we wanted too but forget that , I don’t want to wait another half hour for that. The wine was good but had to keep trying to catch eye contact with the server for another order for it. Worst meal I’ve had so far on this trip which started in Greece hitting a couple countries so far. Better training for the cooks and wait staff is needed cause it wasn’t busy at all so they cannot use that as excuse. Go somewhere else, don’t waste your money at the restaurant here

We booked a family cooking lesson with my two daughters. The whole team gave us an exceptional welcome. We were lucky enough to have chef Matteo, who passed on all his passion and know-how in a good-humored and patient way with the children. We were delighted to taste our dishes, and the whole team at the château, from the waiters to the sommelier, were wonderful to work with. This place is also exceptional, we spent a moment out of time that did us a lot of good. Thank you to the chateau team and thank you again to chef Matteo.

We stayed for a couple of nights at the end of July 2025, on our way from a campsite in Cecina to an AirBnB in Sirmione and I'm so glad we popped this little bit of luxury into our trip! We had 2 borgo's (travelling with friends) & were lucky enough to have a room with a terrace overlooking the hills. All of these rooms had outside space which was cleverly hidden from other guests view points. Everything about out stay was wonderful from the staff, the tasting menu, the pool & honesty bar, the wine, even the shower gel! But special mention must firstly go to Duccio, he has a natural talent of providing excellent service at the same time as being genuinely friendly, knowledgeable and fun - and secondly, the smoked mashed potato ... heavenly! Castello di Tornano is an absolute must visit, go - go now!

We’ve literally just checked out of the hotel and can’t recommend it enough. We took the room at the very top of the tower and didn’t regret paying the extra $$$ for it at all. A legit authentic castle experience (I don’t know about the other rooms - but the one at the top is amazing), and a beautiful roof terrace with panoramic views to top it off. However, what stood apart the most was the staff, their service, their smiles, and their friendliness. We were greeted by Martina, had the lunch tasting menu with the every enthusiastic Duccio, and assisted a number of time by Dutt (Akshay). Both the lunch and the dinner were excellent (some dishes better than others - coq au vin, pappardelle - lamb ragù). Their wines aren’t exceptional and they don’t position them as such, but they were very good for what we hoped for. The pool is lovely and the outdoor restaurant area is beautiful. The only thing that could be better was breakfast, but honestly, I haven’t had a good breakfast anywhere in Tuscany, so I guess that’s just the standard in the region. I wouldn’t let this take anything away from my 5-star review. Can’t wait to come back, for longer next time!

Timeless Tuscan Charm at a Historic Castle-Hotel Staying at this stunning Hotel-Castle in the heart of Tuscany is like stepping into a dream. With origins dating back to 760 AD, the property effortlessly blends history, charm, and modern comfort. Perfectly located, it’s just about an hour’s drive from iconic Tuscan towns like Cortona, Siena, and Montepulciano—making it an ideal base for exploring the region. The castle itself is impeccably maintained, preserving its ancient soul while offering the comforts of a luxury stay. The bar and the restaurant are both exceptional, serving delicious local cuisine and wines with impeccable service. One of the highlights is the beautiful terrace, where you can sit back with a glass of wine and take in the breathtaking views of the rolling Tuscan countryside. The pool is equally delightful—a peaceful spot to relax under the sun, surrounded by nature and history. What truly sets this place apart, though, is the warm and thoughtful attention from the staff. Every detail is taken care of with genuine hospitality. This is more than just a place to stay—it’s a full Tuscan experience. A must-visit for anyone looking to immerse themselves in beauty, culture, and relaxation.
