3 Best Day Trips from Lisbon | Condé Nast Traveler

"The crown jewel of Obidos is without a doubt Castelo de Óbidos, a meticulously preserved medieval castle perched on the northwest side of the walled fortification. Its towers can be seen from nearly everywhere in the village, and its interior has been converted into a Pousada hotel, which is worth checking out. Its garden, terrace, and walls—which extend from it to encompass the village—are free and open to the public." - Jenna Scatena

Beautiful place where it feels like you’ve gone back into another time. To be able to stay in an actual castle is just unbelievable. Hotel itself is well presented and staff are very professional and helpful. The restaurant is nice with some beautiful views, I’d recommend booking ahead. One thing to note is that the markup on the wine menu is ridiculously high

Beautiful castle with amazing views. If you have an hour or two to fill, drive by and enjoy the amazing view, cherry liquor in chocolate cups, and the amazing local cod fish cake. Be ware there are lots of restaurants that do not accept credit cards.

Well worth the trip, the views from along the walkway are great. No railing on the walkway, it is still fairly easy to pass people. Free parking, free entry, and lots of little shops showcasing many different things. Lots of places to climb stairs and get an even better view. Had the pleasure of watching an opera singer strut her stuff at the entrance. Amazing. Part of the wall walk was closed due to a gaming event. Several different churches are inside the walls, they all had very interesting decorations inside and all were free to view. We visited on a Friday and it was not super busy.

Great experience. The wall is unreal and it needs to be highlighted that it’s not for the faint of heart. No barricades at the wall, just straight down. If you don’t like heights, don’t do it. Loses a star as the interior of the castle is now a hotel.

Obidos is a medieval town that's in a rural area of Portugal. It's known for Bitter Cherries, which go into liquors. If you take a tour, it's only an hour and a half. It's high up on a mountain, so views are fabulous. Steep cobble stone, slippery streets. Take care walking. Many original buildings. Shops, restaurants available. It's unique and distinctly different from Porto, Sintra or Lisbon. Loved it!

What a beautiful medieval castle town in Portugal. A not to be missed stop if you are travelling between Porto and Lisbon. This town is so picturesque and well preserved. We spent a lovely day here walking the castle walls and having lunch. The cherry liqueur served in small chocolate cups is a must also.

Love this castle town, free entrance and lots of parking space. Walking around the castle wall was a great experience as you can view the surrounding town inside the castle and beautiful view toward the outside. Is a bit high ground and you need to be cautions on your steps and the wall has no barrier on one side.
