The Museo di Castelvecchio is one of Verona’s most fascinating landmarks, combining military history, architecture, and art in a single, unforgettable space. Originally built in the 14th century as a military fortress, Castelvecchio was designed to control both the Adige River and the city itself, serving as a stronghold for the ruling Scaliger family during a time of political instability.
Walking through the castle, the defensive purpose is immediately clear. Thick walls, watchtowers, battlements, and strategic viewpoints reflect its role as a fortress rather than a palace. From the ramparts and windows, you can see how the castle once dominated river traffic and monitored movement in and out of Verona.
