The purpose of our trip was a weekend getaway in the wine region. Overall, we really enjoyed the hotel. The staff, service, and the place itself — a historic monastery — were truly captivating. The restaurant was quite good as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit the spa, as we focused on exploring local wineries, but based on photos and other guests’ reviews, it seems worth a visit. I’m giving the hotel five stars because we genuinely had a great experience. That said, if I compare it to other five-star hotels, I’d say it’s more of a 4+ or a 5 with a small minus. The design, furniture, and materials used in the renovation were not quite top-tier, but everything else made up for it.

I loved this place. First, it is gorgeous, just a lovely way to restore the monastery. The room was gorgeous and comfortable, the bar where we would grab a light dinner was high quality, but the best part was the thermal pools. After a day of touring the region it was so nice to come back and spend a nice long time alternating between the indoor and outdoor pools. Incredibly relaxing.

Beautiful monastery, an excellent hotel a great stay. Since arriving you are treated as a royalty family. Unique menu at the restaurant with produce from their garden; service at the restaurant was one of the best if not the best of our years of travel. A suggestion: coffee at a 5 stars hotel shall be made to order, not using a coffee machine. Thank you for everything.

This establishment is a big enigma which does not agree with me. The location is nice because its in a small, quaint and quiet town surrounded by vineyards and greenery. Running along the hotel is a river with pleasant trails to stroll. However, the experience inside the hotel is strange. I did not like to staff. 80% of the staff is unusual and pompous. Hardly a smile. I particularly disliked the staff in charge of the dining experience, from breakfast to dinner. There was a sad tone to the atmosphere. Probably the staff is underpaid and overworked which makes them display an unwelcoming behavior mainly seen through the looks they give and overall body language. The hotel does not have a single outdoor seating area thats not the one in front of the parking lot/ entrance. All areas are basically underground, with tiny windows that are not at eye-level. Its a pity because the hotel lacks ergonomic design. The rooms are gloomy given the use of dark colors such as grey and brown. Unfortunately, the view from the room ( some not all) is nice but the interior design is left to be desired.

Large hotel inside a reconverted monastery. They have done a great job in balancing the need for modern rooms and facilities while keeping the charm of the original building. The spa is very high quality and in addition there are many facilities like outdoor pool, indoor pool, saunas, gym, winery. Location is great, off the beaten path yet very close to Peñafiel and inside a charming little village on the banks of Douro river. Easy access to many wineries. The hotel has several dining options, I recommend the patio dining (informal) and their gastronomic option. The rooms are very spacious with plenty of light and well appointed and modern.

Stayed here for three nights in August '24 and we had such a great time. Relaxation and calmness was just what we needed and we got it. Will definitely be back next time we are in the area. Highly recommended!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We appreciated that the hotel still has bell hops to help with our luggage, store the bike we were traveling with. We also appreciated how we were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine & a seat while we checked in. Our room, a historical deluxe double, was gorgeous and quite spacious. We also enjoyed the spa circuit with different types of water jets & bubbles. All in all we highly recommend this property. Breakfast was very lovely, among the best in our extensive travels. After sampling the gastro pub, which was neither particularly gastronomic nor pub-like (or speedy), we went elsewhere for lunch & dinner and appreciated the concierge service for helping us with reservations. The hotel values sustainability, has switched to bamboo key cards, urges guests to reuse towels, sources local products and even has a small garden and chickens on site. To that end, I would urge management to reconsider outdoor lighting to preserve the dark sky. There are ways to light a property and minimize light pollution, which impacts wildlife. I was hoping to photograph the Milky Way as we were there during the new moon during peak viewing time and the area in general has low light pollution. But the lights from the monastery were much too bright and made that impossible though I walked far from it.

Very beautiful stay in the old monastery. Extremely comfortable and very authentic. The restoration and transformation is remarkable and the spa is a delight – particularly the private water circuit adjacent to the large pool. Excellent service. Already planning a return.

Yelp
This is a top-notch restaurant inside of the hotel. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. It's an old fort/castle that has been converted into an absolutely gorgeous hotel and top quality service. The food here is excellent. White asparagus omg! The garlic sprouts, wow, the quail with lentils where good but not great. The bread and olive oil, fantastic! The mushroom risotto is out Of This World.

Yelp
This is focusing only on the hotel restaurant Converso where I had several meals during my stay at the Castillo Termal. First out, breakfast. This was a massive delight! Lots to choose from, you can go totally unhealthy until you pop or keep it simple, healthy and fresh. Omelettes, fresh smoothies, charcuteries, cheeses, sweets, crepes. They had it all. One of the best hotel breakfasts I've ever had. 4+ stars. However, their a la carte leaves a bit to be desired. Some dishes were excellent (braised beef cheeks and potato purée, scallops with prawns and truffle) while others suffered from issues such as inconsistent portion control, dry cooked fish with soggy skin etc. The service was acceptable at best. So ups and downs, with highlights being high and lows very low. But all in all a-ok.
