Castillo de Gibralfaro

Upon reaching the top of the Castillo, my family and I said to each other, "is that it? We walked all the way up for this?" But upon greater reflection and looking around more, hiking to Castillo de Gibralfaro was the best thing we did. That feeling of accomplishment that sits with you when you spend a little more time at the top was wonderful. You get almost the entire view of District Central at the top - truly beautiful it was! I also appreciated it much when I learned the Islamic history behind this monument. There were opportunities to sit throughout the journey of making it to the top. And there was a cat near the top too, making the experience even better. Honestly, if you're in Málaga, you just have to visit this Castillo. It feels exhausting and annoying at first but you'll grow to appreciate it after fighting for your life.

Interesting Castle and grounds with great views over the city and coast. We walked from the city up the hill which was pleasant. Quite a popular attraction so it was crowded when we visited in the late morning - probably worth planning an earlier or later visit to avoid the crowds.

We were so lucky the day we visited — it happened to be a free entrance day for museums and attractions, so we saved €10 per person! 🎉 Surprisingly, it wasn’t crowded at all. The views from the lookout point and the castle are stunning — a full 360° view of Málaga that’s absolutely worth the effort. Inside the castle is beautiful and well preserved. 👉 A few tips if you’re going: The walk up is a good incline, about 10 minutes. Definitely skip high heels — I wore flat sandals and ended up taking them off to walk down! Wheelchair users: the castle grounds themselves are accessible, but the hike up is not. If you need access, make sure to take a taxi or the hop-on hop-off bus straight to the entrance. The view is worth it! If you don’t feel like climbing, the hop-on hop-off bus takes you to the top. You can also ride up and then walk down toward town for amazing views without paying entrance. In summer, try to avoid the hottest days — even with mild weather we were glad it was overcast. At the top, there are toilets and a small café. Along the climb, you’ll find guys selling bottled water for €1.50 — handy if you forget yours. A must-see if you’re in Málaga, whether for the history or just for those incredible views. 🌿🏰

Beautiful historic castle with one of the best panoramic views of Málaga — you can see the port, the bullring, and the entire city all the way to the sea. There’s a small free parking area at the top, but spaces are limited, especially on weekends. If it’s full, you can also park lower down and enjoy a scenic uphill walk through the pine forest about 15–20 minutes. Walking along the ancient fortress walls is a highlight the views from every corner are stunning, especially at sunset. Inside, you’ll also find a small museum with historical artifacts and models of the old city. Bring comfortable shoes, water, and your camera it’s absolutely worth the climb. The tickets cost 10€ combined with al Cazaba, and can be buy at the entrance machine

We went on a Tuesday - was not crowded at all, fast checking of the tickets. They give you a free calendar for 2026 with the castle which adds a good touch. There is a bar as well. The hike can be a bit hard at times but you also have bus n.35 going there. There are very beautiful sights especially when the weather is clearer and there is not much wind so you can enjoy it.

It is a long way up and worth it! You can walk the ramparts of the castle, enjoy the courtyard within them, and I wind with a libation at the cafe. The view of Malaga is fabulous.

Well worth the visit! Extensive improved pathways but still you need some flexbility and to be able to walk with walking/hiking sticks or less to access much of it. Many stone mosaics . We bought our Alcabaza and Gibralfaro tickets together and visited the places on separate days. Gibralfaro has a nice café where you can enjoy a drink and sit in the sun 🌞 or the shade 😎 We visited the Alhambra in Granada a day or two later and although nobody can deny that it is spectacular I enjoyed how the Alcabaza and Castillo de Gibralfaro in Malaga were less of a zoo. I had a chance to just appreciate the place itself in a more relaxed way and see the whole thing in less than 2 hrs. The Alhambra is more overwhelming. I think children might enjoy these places in Malaga more than the Alhambra.

I found this old castle just OK. It is basically a shell of old walls and ramparts The Gibralfaro fortress dominates the whole city, and is situated on the crest of a long rise located almost 400 feet above sea level. The layout of the walls of the Gibralfaro fortress is very irregular. The easiest way to get to the entrance is to take bus #35 from the Parque de la Marina and it will take you easily up to the top. If you decide to walk it, you can find a walking paved trail starting at Parque de la Merced, that will take you about 20 minutes uphill to the castle. The views of the city are amazing..that is the main reason for the visit...Enjoy it !!!!

Magnificent castle atop a hill dating back to 14th century during Muslim times of Malaga. It was built to protect Alzacaba castle. You can get there both by bus and by foot, although it's a little bit of a hike, it's worth it, as it's probably the best place to get breathtaking views of Malaga. The entrance is no more than 3 EUR, you can also get a combined ticket to visit Alcazaba as well, I'd say it's well worth it! Inside the castle itself there is a nice walk along ramparts, well-preserved courtyard and a little military museum dedicated to garrison history after the Reconquest. It has things like period uniforms, cartography instruments, etc. Great experience!

We visited this castle from the 14th Century while riding the HOHO. It stopped right in front. The castle is amazing and the views from the top are stunning. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk up hill a lot. Try to arrive early as the crowds begin to build just before noon. well worth a visit.

This is an gorgeous fortress from the 14th century. Inside the fortress is an information center, depicting the history of the fortress and Malaga. Because the castillo sits high above Malaga, it provides excellent views of Malaga -including an infamous bullring.

I walk out of my flat, go up a hill and waaalaaaa. I'm in the hill. Getting there can be hard for some but since i'm up here 5 times a week, I can run up there without taking a breath. And it's beautiful up here. Best views of Malaga. I rent my spare room in the summers via AirBNB and I always stress to people to walk up that hill. However some are afraid it's too hard. But it really isn't. If you use the stairs it takes about 15 minutes. If you take the slow and easier route it takes about 30 minutes. It's so nice up there. you have the Castle which is free on Sundays. The mountain gives you the sense of being in nature. So if your afraid of doing a bit of hard work getting up that hill, then you're missing out! PS: If you go up the stairs... wear good shoes not flip flops! You will slide.

The castle is pretty big and pretty. The entrance is cheap, it costs 3.5 euros. There is a nice cafe also were you can see the whole city. The way to the castle is super exhausting but the view is rewarding!

I have a very keen interest in the Peninsular War that Spain fought against Napoleons encroachments and this little fortress on the top of a mountain played a small part in resisting the French VERY picturesque and with incredible views over Malaga Well worth the excursion!!!!

The walk was intense. Very steep in some parts, but it is worth is as tbe views along the way are worth taking in whilst you take a breath. The path is well maintained and therw is a cafe within the castle walls to refreah yourself and a small museum.

In comparison with Alcazaba, there is not much to see inside the Castle. As you go uphill however, you'll get amazing views of the city. Still worth the journey.

This magnificent building dates back to the beginning of the 14th century. From the castle you have great views to all the Malaga bay.The castle is opened from 9 am to 6 pm in winter and to 8 pm in summer. It definitely worths a visit!
