How to Visit Oia, Greece

"I visited Oia Castle, also called St. Nicolas Castle, to get a sense of Santorini’s history; though little of the original fortress remains, you can still spot rubble from the 15th-century watchtower that once defended the island, and the site provides a sweeping ocean view that has made it the most popular—and often crowded—spot to watch the sunset." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Oia is absolutely breathtaking – one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages I've ever seen! The whitewashed buildings, iconic blue domes, charming narrow alleys, and stunning views over the caldera make every corner feel like a postcard. To fully explore Oia and walk from one end to the other (including the castle ruins, windmills, and all the hidden spots), you should allow at least 2 hours. It’s surprisingly spread out along the cliffside, with plenty of ups and downs, photo stops, and little shops to wander through. If you're catching the sunset, add extra time to find a good spot! Highly recommend visiting early in the morning or late afternoon to beat the crowds. Oia is pure magic – don't miss it!

A must go to and visit place, if you are on holiday on Santorini, Greece. Highlights the fabulous white and blue buildings over look the volcano. Definitely a place to be during sunset. Great restaurants and if you a table for the sunset, pre book is a must.

It was a cloudy afternoon at the Castle of Oia, so we missed the famous golden sunset — but the views were still stunning. The sky cast a soft, moody light over the whitewashed houses and caldera cliffs, creating a calm and almost magical atmosphere What made the visit even more special were the friendly cats lounging around the ruins and narrow paths, completely at ease with the passing visitors. They seemed to belong to the island itself, adding a warm and familiar touch to this picturesque spot With fewer crowds that day, we could truly enjoy the scenery — and share quiet moments with the island’s beloved cats

Built by Venetians in the early XVI century as a strategic defense against pirate invasions. Much of the fortress was destroyed by earthquakes and now in ruins. Only the top part is accessible, but it still worth getting there because of the awesome panoramic views.

Beautiful views amongst the remaining rubble. Peaceful and makes you want to spend the rest of your life here. -Not for mobility challenged individuals. See all of this while you are physically able before it’s too late.

Love stopping at any ancient ruins! Very crowded location but great views. The best part was finding a little souvenir shop with local artist artwork on our way traversing down the little streets to the ruins!

Amazing is not a big enough word to describe the views and emotions. Visiting Oia was on my bucket list for a long while, I am so glad I was finally able to do this.

The castle is a great place to see the sunset from, but even in less than peak times it is crowded. Either come an hour before sunset or, even better, find an alternative spot. The sunset is indeed amazing
