32 Best Things to Do in Lisbon, Portugal's Sun-Soaked Capital | Condé Nast Traveler

"For a newer take on the classic pastel de nata, this spot’s tarts are, we think, up there with the very best in town." - Abigail Malbon

Castro - Atelier de Pastéis de Nata

Google
I’ve tried all the well-known spots for pastel de nata, and this one stands out above the rest. The pastry is perfectly crisp, the filling is rich and balanced, and every bite feels freshly made. After comparing it with all the famous places in town, this is without a doubt the best pastel de nata I’ve had.

Google
Nice Nata tart from here in warm and crispy shell. Not too sweet and great aftertaste. The take out box looks good and well construct to bring home share with families. P.S the lady who handle cashier is very Sweet and polite. Can’t say no to her.

On a friend’s recommendation, I decided to try this pastelaria. Their Pastel de Nata came with a cinnamon touch, which was nice, though for me it leaned a bit on the sweeter side compared to the perfectly balanced ones I prefer. Still, it was tasty and enjoyable. The price is about 20 to 30 cents more per piece than in other pastelarias, most likely because of the location. The staff were friendly, which made the experience pleasant overall.

Google
Tiny but very pretty coffee and pastel de nata shop. You can watch the pastel de nata being made, which is interesting. There are 3 tables with four chairs each. They do a brisk business and everyone is taking pictures!

Google
We rushed from dinner to get here before they closed. We made it and were able to grab 4 pasteis de nata. After 12 days in Portugal and multiple pasteis de nata, we were not disappointed by castro’s. It was everything we expected and hoped for. Even at the end of the night, these pasteis de nata were still flaky and the custard was perfect. It had the perfect amount of caramelization and the custard was still warm and delicious. My only regret was not getting more.

Google
Loved the cute decor on the window display! 🥰 Delicious Pastéis de nata in reasonable prices. The Flat White was a little let down, the watery coffee was topped with a big blob of milk froth, it wasn’t what we expected and was very blend in taste. 😬

Google
This was the second Portuguese egg tart shop we visited. After a disappointing experience with the first one—especially since we had bought it after dinner—we didn’t have high expectations for this one. However, it turned out to be surprisingly good! The custard wasn’t overly sweet, with just the right texture to match what we were hoping for. The crust was incredibly crispy, and even as takeaway, it was absolutely delicious.

Yelp
Every bit as good as the other reviewers say. I was skeptical because I wasn't a big fan of pastel de nata, but Castro has changed my mind. The crust was flakey and the custard had a good texture, not overly sweet. Perfection.

Yelp
Amazing pastel de Nata shop. Recommend getting 2 or 3 each (one just isn't enough!). Coffee bar also available for iced or hot drinks. Cute art deco decor and a few tables inside to eat. Quick service. They also have boxes available to take them to go.

Yelp
This is a pretty popular de nata spot near the Santa Justa lift. It is quite small with a bar top to stand and dine in. Although quite solid, I think Pasteis de Belem was still the winner for me in Lisbon. The custard was on the sweeter side for me and the crust was not as crispy, especially due to the fact that it was not served warm. Nonetheless, service was pretty quick and good here - I would definitely recommend checking Castro out if you're in the area because there's no such thing as eating too much egg tarts when you are in Portugal!

Yelp
This was also one of my favorite pastel de nata in portugal, it had a short little line, but it went fast. I meant to come back, but there were so many other options I ended up visiting a lot of mediocre pastel de nata places during my travels. If you want a solid pastel de nata, this one is a contender.

Yelp
Delicious warm and fresh pastel de nate. Only has sesting outside which is good. You can watch people stand in line for the elevador while you enjoy a treat. Cappuccino was perfection and open late.

Yelp
One of my favorite pasteis de nata that I tried in Portugal! I think it has the perfect ratio of custard and crust (unlike the ultra popular Pasteis de Belém). Not a lot of seating inside, which was fine by me because I was planning on taking them to-go. Friendly cashier.

Yelp
Very solid pasteis de nata right by the Santa Justa lift. The pastry shell is definitely one of the best and you can see the master bakers at work in the open kitchen. Worth a stop if you are in the area (and don't want to make the trek all the way to Belem - these are a good proxy)! Grab a box of 6 for $9 (they come in a nice tube-like pack).

Yelp
If I could rate this place more stars I would! I went here twice on my trip to Lisbon and it was my favorite place to get pasteis de nata. The nata is the perfect level of sweetness and the coffee is delicious as well. The place can only accommodate three parties sitting and two or three standing so be mindful of that. I can't wait to be back in Lisbon just for Castro. Believe me these are better than Pasteis de Belem!

Yelp
Went here for desert, the only have pastel de natas, coffee and Port wine and Ginja. Natas were amazing, you can add cinnamon or sugar on top. There are a few high table tops where you can stand to have the desert and a drink. It is not meant for you to stay there a long time. Service is polite and friendly.

Yelp
I will not reveal the number of times we went here on a recent trip to Lisbon :) between Castro and Mantegaria up the street we were definitely spoiled for choice ! We loved the sit down option here and enjoyed many tarts, espresso, port and Ginjinha. Loved the beautiful cups and saucers and friendly service They were also nice enough to give us steamed milk for our toddler

Yelp
The best Pastéis de natas in Lisbon. I promise you. Custard was perfect, not too sweet. Crust was the perfect texture. I'm still dreaming of these wonderful bites of heaven with a light dusting of cinnamon.

Yelp
PERFECT Pastel de Nata , delicious coffee as well!! We ate here every morning :) the cafe is very cute and there are tables that you can sit and eat your pastries at and watch the chefs at work. Very affordable and mouth watering!!

Yelp
This was the first pasteis de nata we tried in Lisbon since it was a block away from our hotel. However, they ended up being our least favorite ones we had out of all the dedicated pasteis de nata bakeries during our weeklong trip. First of all, they were served cold, unlike Manteigaria and Pasteis de Belem. It's really hard to compete with warm pastry, so they were already way behind there. The pastry was nice and flaky, but not the flakiest we had. The custard was too sweet for my husband and a little too gloopy. I will admit it was quite sweet, and I have a considerable sweet tooth. Overall, this will be better than any pastel de nata you will encounter outside of Portugal, but it paled compared to the other popular pasteis de nata bakeries in this country.

Yelp
Upscaled without good reason. Just ok. Cooled. Should be served fresh, warm, crispy, with a flaky pastry shell. Once chilled the pastry becomes chewy, and not the best in taste or texture.

Yelp
I absolutely love anything custard like and while in Lisbon had to eat some of these delicious custard pies. By this time I had tried at least four different places. These were very fancy wrapped and beyond delicious. Very cute cafe to sit and enjoy some with a friend. I took some to go, if I lived here this would be my go to place for sure :)

Yelp
Very good coffee, brewed on an italian cimbali machine. I had a flat white and it came in a tiny espresso type of cup. Tiny, but good. The pastel de nato is very good. Crispy and flaky and the custard was not too sweet. Hot off the press with bakers behind the glass doing their magic. Directly across the street from the santa justa lift.

Yelp
These were the absolute best natas I found in porto. I honestly can't stop thinking about them. The bakery is clearly newer than the more traditional places in the neighborhood, but this has to be a stop for anyone looking for amazing natas.

Yelp
Extraordinarily delicious... Freshly made onsite, warm - soooo good. Recommended by our local guide as one of his favorites. We have been tasting Pastel de Nata places all week. One of the best for sure.

Yelp
We came across Castro during a sightseeing walk through the city. We decided to stop in and give it a try, partially just so we could rest our legs. We are glad we did. This was a great find. Everything about this little pastry shop clicks. The mechanical window display is humorous and eye catching. On the inside, the well laid out pastry de nadas brighten up the countertop, while in the back a pastry chef is clearly seen working his magic. It's moot to argue which shop has the best pastry de nata in Lisbon, I can promise that this Castro Atelier de Pasteis de Nata deserves to be in the discussion. This place is a must visit when in Lisbon. You can't go wrong with Castro's.

Yelp
Natas! Amazing. Great area, lively, good for walking. Add the cinnamon and the powdered sugar!
google avatar

Yelp
Good but the filling was too sweet, a little too dense and had a big cinnamon taste without adding any.

Yelp
This is the best pastel de nata in the city. It is warm, the taste is incredible, and the crust is perfectly done. They cook nothing but this and have truly mastered it! I've been back nearly every day I have been here.
