10 Places to Explore the Dark Underbelly of Rome

"Known as one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome, the Catacombs of San Sebastian have long attracted devout Christian pilgrims and curious visitors. Along the first four mile stretch of Via Appia, are The Catacombs of San Sebastian. The martyred remains of San Sebastian were buried at the site in 350, and a basilica was erected over the grounds to honor the saint in the early 4th century. At the time, the subterranean burial area became known as ad catacumbas, which means “near the hollows,” due to the excavated mines near the site. This was the first use of term catacombs, and it has since signified underground Christian burials chambers. Since the site was erected, many pilgrims have come to visit and see the relics held at the basilica as well. The basilica is dedicated to San Sebastian, who was martyred, and it houses the arrow that allegedly struck San Sebastian during his murder. Besides the arrow relic, the basilica also possesses a set of marble footprints, that are attributed to Jesus, during his walk to Rome along the Via Appia." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Great experience visiting the underground catacombs of San Sebastián. It was nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city. It is was very peaceful and not busy at all. We visited on a Sunday. We got there by uber/taxi for about 24 euros from the downtown core. Dropped us right out front. We did reserve ahead of time online. However, we arrived very early and they bumped us up to an earlier slot. So don’t worry too much if you reserve or forget too. They are very flexible to accommodate the customers. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The tour lasted around 40 minutes. We visited in July and did not find it necessary to bring extra clothing. We were fine in shorts and t-shirts as it was a nice break from the heat outside! We saw concerns of claustrophobia, but it was not that bad at all. We suffer a little from this but found it find. Perhaps if you have serve concerns, may be avoid. The tunnels are not that closed in. The tour ends at the church. Very beautiful tour and we highly recommend as something different to the regular Rome experiences.

The church is beautiful and has a rich history. Superb guided tour, in English, explaining full history ( e.g. remains of Saints / apostles Peter & Paul were held here ). You walk downstairs to a level approx 12 metres below the floor. So may not be good for people with walking difficulties. You DO see the catacombs below the church but you DO NOT see bones etc.

Fascinating and Eerie Experience! The Catacombs of Saint Sebastian offer a unique glimpse into early Christian history and the ancient burial practices of Rome. These underground tunnels are rich in history, with beautifully preserved frescoes, inscriptions, and tombs dating back to the 3rd century. The guided tour provides insightful stories about the early Christians and martyrs who were buried here. It’s a slightly eerie but fascinating experience, as you walk through the dimly lit corridors lined with ancient burial niches. Unlike the more famous catacombs, this site is less crowded, allowing for a peaceful and immersive visit. If you love history, archaeology, or just want to explore a hidden side of Rome, this is a must-visit! 🏛️🕯️✨

The guide was great. Told us the story by facts less by the Christian way.. was truly. And admitted the are pagan built tombs there the where covered up by building. The tour was interesting . It is less toured than the main catacombs, but fewer tourists give it a longer tour and more intense experience

One of the 7 pilgrim churches - quite out of the way but worth the visit, along with catacombs attached. The church contains the remains of St Sebastian and the original goes back to the 4th century. Also the last work of Bernini (Christus Salvador Mundi) is there and some interesting relics. The catacombs are similar to S. Callisto. Probably no need to do both unless you are very catacomb keen. No photos in the catacombs are allowed.

Our visit was most enjoyable, with about 12 people in our group lasting 40 minutes. The history & venue is fantastic, with a maze of tunnels to walk through. Our guide was clearly a local, most knowledgeable who spoke English okay & this added to the atmosphere & feeling of the Roman history in part & the use of the catacombs. Our finish in the Basilica rounded off the tour well to understand the site even more. Very reasonable price of €10 each & pleased this will support the catacombs directly.

Amazing to see the places in which the early Christians would bury their dead. Visited as part of a weekend where I visited the seven pilgrim churches of Rome. The tour guide was fantastic, and her English was exceptional, despite it being her second language. She even understood me with my tricky accent. She did a brilliant job, and I loved the chance to see a part of Rome's history I had never seen before. There's a nice little bar next door too, where you can relax with a spritz after.
