Catania Fish Market

If you want to feel the true heartbeat of Catania, step into La Pescheria and don’t mind getting your shoes a little dusty. It’s not just a fish market, it’s a daily performance where swordfish steals the spotlight and vendors sing out the catch like opera stars. Loud, salty, vibrant, and completely real, this is Catania at its most authentic.

This market is much more lively and interesting than the street markets of Palermo. It is smelly even after the vendors are packed up for the day. It is open in the morning and there are also other vendors there too. Several stalls will sell oysters on the half shell. Worth a visit especially since it is right near the Duomo square. Free to enter. Continuing following the colorful umbrellas to more vendors and restaurants through the small alleys to experience Catania life.

We spent Christmas and New Year's Eve in Catania. One of the city's attractions is the fish market located near the Duomo square. Officially, the market takes place every day except Sunday, but you can also find a few fish stalls on Sundays. Usually Sundays are flea/antique markets. The fish market is a spectacle in itself, with vendors loudly praising their wares and trying to get the best price for their wares. As I said, the market is held from morning until lunchtime, then the area is cleared and becomes a regular pedestrian area. So if you are in Catania and are interested in fish or seafood, it is worth a visit.

Spread over area behind the Amaneno fountain (fountain with waterfall) and area accessible thru Porta Uzeda. Definitely go early. At 12 you will find just cleaning crew. Many things don't have displayed price so haggle, especially when it's close to the end. Most sellers accept only cash payment. It's definitely worth to go and you can try lots of nice food.

S special place to visit in Catania. You don't have the possibility to see it everyday. An open place where the fishermen sell their fish. A very original one. And you don't pay anything and can taste grilled fish or seafood for little money.

Great market; more than just seafood. Would love to bring some home. All the feel of a fish market with the yelling, the fresh seafood smell and friendly service. Plenty of places to try the food as well. Not as big as Seoul, but worth a visit if in Catania.
