Catedral de Segovia

The Cathedral of Segovia is absolutely breathtaking — a must-visit if you’re exploring this historic city. Often called “The Lady of Cathedrals” (La Dama de las Catedrales), it’s one of the last great Gothic cathedrals built in Spain, completed in the mid-16th century. What makes it so special is how it beautifully bridges late Gothic architecture with touches of Renaissance style — tall, elegant vaults, intricate stained glass, and a calm golden light that fills the entire space. Inside, the chapels are stunning, each with its own art and story. You can also visit the cloister and the museum, which hold centuries of religious art and artifacts. I especially loved how peaceful it felt despite being such a grand structure — it truly feels like stepping into another era.

My husband and I visited the Cathedral on a Thursday in late March. It was an easy landmark to walk past and because we were able to visit the Alcazar earlier than planned, we had time to hit the Cathedral before lunch and our earlier train back. You do have to pay to visit this Cathedral, but it is well worth it as the last Gothic Cathedral built in Europe. There was great natural light when we visited, even on a chilly day, and it really showed off the Cathedral to its best from a massive illuminated manuscript to the cloisters, and a random moon installation, everyone tried to touch on their tiptoes.

Known as the “Lady of Cathedrals” for its elegance, it was begun in the 16th century and took nearly 200 years to complete — and you can see the painstaking detail in every stone. Its late Gothic design with soaring spires, intricate carvings, and stunning stained glass makes it not just a religious site, but a living piece of art. Walking inside, you’re surrounded by chapels, vaulted ceilings, and priceless artworks that feel timeless. Segovia itself is one of the most architecturally beautiful cities in Spain, and the cathedral is its crown jewel. I highly recommend everyone to experience it in person — photos don’t do justice to its scale and artistry.

A beautiful mediaeval cathedral at Segovia which we visited as part of the day trip from Madrid. The history and culture is very interesting. They had a lot of interesting artefacts from ages ago.

An amazing and beautiful Cathedral that is a must see in Segovia, like every review says. We took the 12:00 pm tower tour and loved it. The tour is in Spanish but we were given an audioguide with descriptions in English. Highly recommend this tour for a great view and the ability to see the amazing bell tower.

Segovia Cathedral – Simply Breathtaking One of the most beautiful and largest cathedrals I’ve ever seen. The interior architecture is flawless — every detail feels grand and timeless. Honestly, I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. Walking inside feels humbling, like stepping into history itself. A must-visit if you’re in Segovia.

What can else can I add to the mountain of reviews. This place is a piece of history, architecture is amazing and makes you wonder how everything was put together. Just a heads up, while the church can be viewed during their normal hours, you will need to buy separate tickets to tour the famous tower. If you’re looking for a killer view, would recommend the tours during their normal hours evening. Ours was at 9:30pm and it added to the experience.

Didn’t get a chance to visit the cathedral inside but the outside looks impressive. You can see it from several parts of the city, one of them from the plaza. The location is beautiful. there ia lots of green space to admire and enjoy.

A Book by Its Cover It's not the the interior is unimpressive; quite the opposite, really. It is stunning. However, the best views of this cathedral are of its exterior. Whether you are standing close (perhaps in Plaza Mayor) or viewing it from afar, its presence utterly dominates the old town. If you have the time and the flexibility, make it a point to find one of the many locations beyond the confines of the town to experience the majestic views provided by the mountains as a backdrop. It will take your breath away.

Segovia, with a small population of about 35,000 people, has a ridiculously gargantuan and incredible cathedral. This giant Gothic church was built from 1525-1768, and was the last major Gothic church built in Spain. The inside is impressive as with any church at this level, but I found the golden exterior and all its sky piercing pinnacles much more impressionable. Unfortunately due to lack of time(damn tour group!) I didn't get a chance to ascent the 300 foot tall and 190 step tower. One can only imagine what incredible aerial views could be see of the aquaduct and alcazar. €7 to see both the cathedral and the tower, or just €3 without the tower.

The Cathedral of Segovia is a great example of the late Gothic style in the 16th century. Its construction began in 1525 during the reign of Emperor Carlos V and it was consecrated in 1768. The Cathedral is located off the Plaza Mayor within the old city walls, and it is easily identified from the distance by its tall tower. The Cathedral stands on the spot where Isabella I was proclaimed Queen of Castile. Affectionately called La Dama de Las Catedrales, Segovia Cathedral combines a supremely Gothic exterior combined with a surprisingly bare interior. Admission to the Cathedral, Cloister, Chapel room, and Museum will set you back €2. However, hours may be limited by when Mass is held.

Okay. To be honest, we stumbled upon this ... and not exactly by accident. We didn't plan our Segovia trip ... figured we get there and meander around. Whatever I know, I know from wiki. =PP It's hard not to find yourself accidentally meandering into the main (and only?) Cathedral in Segovia (once had the tallest tower in Spain). While definitely less impressive as Gaudi's famed Sagrada Familia, the Catedral has it's own charm. It's an active church, when we were there we happened upon mass taking place in one end and the other open for the public. I especially loved seeing the intricate artwork on the turrets as well as the interior sculptures depicting stories in the bible. The sculptures are behind bars so viewable but not accessible to the public. Incredibly well maintained. If you're hankering to see another Roman Cathedral, then look no further. It's smack right in the Plaza Mayor ... hard to miss.

Beautiful and a must see. There are restaurants nearby where you can eat or have coffee with a view of this place. We went on a Sunday therefor we didn't walk inside because of mass but I can imagine that it is worth seeing.

It is very nice, however we have visited so many of the churches in the world already. It is not the most impressive one. But if you are in Segovia, for sure it worth your time to visit. When you visit Segovia I would suggest that you should also at least visit the Alcazar which is also as impressive or even more so.
