In West Virginia, a Small Town Feels the Impact of a New National Park

"On a recent, balmy Sunday morning, a line of customers waiting for coffee at the Cathedral Café snaked up the main thoroughfare of Fayetteville, West Virginia."

My sister and I stopped in here for lunch because they offered both vegetarian and gluten free options. We were blown away by the quality of the food. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was great, the food and drink options were amazing. This is a must stop if you are in the area.

Google
Really cool spot that from the second you walk in you immediately understand why it’s rated so highly. Really unique interior, with both cool and cozy vibes. Latte was massive and really good, and the breakfast bagel sandwich was exactly what I needed before a day of hiking. Would happily come back!

Google
This is a really unique spot with great food that include breakfast and lunch fare. There are vegetarian options, which is nice. They serve coffee drinks as well as alcohol, so it’s a great spot for lots of options. The ambiance is nice and the big stained glass windows are very pretty. Definitely worth a visit!

Google
Cathedral Cafe is a must-visit! Their coffee is truly some of the best in WV—my husband is a bit of a coffee snob and absolutely loves it here. I’m more of a matcha girl, though, so I’d love to see them add it to the menu to see their take! They also have a dog-friendly patio, which is fantastic, but be aware: this place is popular. Parking can be a challenge, mostly street parking, so plan ahead. Last time we went, they mentioned it could take an hour for food, but ours came out in just 15 minutes—maybe we lucked out with our order! The croissant French toast is incredible, and their bagels are consistently good too. The prices are on the high side; almost $40 for two drinks and two coffees feels steep, especially for WV. That said, Cathedral Cafe’s quality, cozy ambiance, and friendly staff make it worth the splurge.

Google
Amazing restaurant! It is conveniently located near shops in Fayetteville, and they have plenty of parallel parking spots. The food is incredible. They have breakfast foods like pancakes, eggs, bacon, french toast, hash browns, etc. Their drink menu is fabulous! I got the vanilla oat milk matcha and it was fantastic! Additionally, they have a little souvenir/artisan shop on the upper level. It’s all around a great place with great food and awesome architecture!

Google
Cool place and starts very early in the morning. We went there for breakfast and ordered omelets and coffee. Omelets were excellent (gorged and carnivore), they had nice and crispy on the outside. Friendly staff and cute coffee bar. It has really good vegetarian and vegan options too.

Google
a Google search for “breakfast near me” brought up the “Cathedral Cafe” and it had counter-seating - hmmm? 🤔? … and the opportunity for smiles of Day 5 to find me were in process 😃 … super-server “Carolyn” (now a “Run-A-Way Bill” “Favorite Sticker Winner”) entertained me with historical trivia and gave me my 1st smiles if the day … the local newspaper had a “Hatfield” headline (most likely a McCoy 😂) - I was in THE “Hatfield’s & McCoy’s” feuding zone too … my breakfast was a double-Q — quality & quantity! very historical - the only bones discovered in renovation appears in a jar for my convenient viewing 😂 … old prohibition type bottles were discovered in the renovation and were on display too … the “Team Cathedral Café” staff was super-riffic too - smiling, efficient and professional … street parking can be tough, but it is FREE … the “only” parking spot was the “best” parking spot too - it’s like it was waiting for me … “Run-A-Way Bill” was here!

Google
Really unique cafe inside a restored cathedral with beautiful stained glass! Casual counter service with coffee refills.

Yelp
Our breakfast stop before headin on the road home! Cute spot where you can dine in or take food/drinks to go. Really enjoyed my smoked salmon bagel . Items came out quickly. Service was nice. You order at the counter and given a number. If you're heading into town or heading out, pleasant place to grab a bite. :)

Yelp
PUMPKIN PIE COLD BREW from Cathedral Café - 134 S Court Street Fayetteville, WV for the perfect coffee-dessertish-yummerific hurricane of tastiness. It was quite pretty to look at, too! They are consistently awesome! It was good seeing you as always, Wendy Stone Bayes! I'm a big fan!

Yelp
Came in for breakfast about an hour past open on Sunday and the place was busy! We had a 20 min wait for our table, but it ended up only being around 10 mins total. We sat, got up and ordered, and came back to the table. The coffee drinks were out in under 5 mins and the food was out in about 10. All 3 of us had bagel sandwiches. I had the smoked salmon on an everything bagel without onions and it was perfect. there wasn't too much cream cheese, there was plenty of salmon, and the bagel was toasted lightly. I ordered a dirty chai and it was topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon. It wasn't sweet at all, but was smooth and creamy. They have two bathrooms tucked in the back corner that are unisex. The one I went in was small, but clean. They have most tables inside, but a few outside seating options, as well. It was getting way more crowded as we left. Several parties were waiting outside for their table. Go early!

Yelp
What a beautiful spot! Located in downtown Fayetteville, we parked out front and were quickly greeted by the person behind the bar. She told us to sit anywhere, grab a menu, and order at the purple table. We perused the menu and I decided on the ultimate grilled cheese panini and added ham. It came with a dill pickle spear and chips. The panini was huge! Should have shared! The bread was so good though! My husband had to try the animal cracker cheesecake and I had a small bite. It was very good! My friend ordered the carrot cake and that was divine! They have a retail shop upstairs as well with some fun shopping to check out while you wait for your food.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended by the hotel and our white water raft tour guide.. Overall, we felt it was just OK. You order your food at the cash register. Your drinks/coffee will be called for you to pick up your drinks. They deliver your food to your table. When you pay, you have an option to leave tip at 18%, 20%, 25% or other. Chocolate chip pancakes were burnt (see pix) Chicken quesadilla was ok - chicken was a bit dry Chicken pot pie (special) - not that great and we didn't finish it. I prefer the one in Glencoe at Apple a Day. Smoked Turkey, provolone cheese, and avocado panini was ok - they only gave three small slices of avocado (see pix). Breakfast burrito - ok (a bit cold inside) Overall, the cafe was just a regular cafe.

Yelp
Sometimes you seat yourself and sometimes a hostess seats you. Small parking lot next to the building or street parking. Eclectic and hipster vibe and music which I LOVE! Very welcoming and inclusive. They are a cafe that also sells shirts, stickers and other merchandise from local artists. LOVED my oat milk chai and apple spice croissant french toast! I went up to the counter to order and pay and then they give you a number that you place on your table- helps the employees find you. Service can sometimes be slow when busy but they are WORTH the wait!

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a weekend and it was pretty busy so we ordered to go. The church itself is nice and the restaurant has a nice vibe. I think my order got messed up somehow since I ordered the Turkey and Cheddar which is supposed to come with lettuce, tomato, onion, and some other stuff but I only got the turkey and cheddar. So I was pretty disappointed. Otherwise I'm sure it would have been decent. I would be willing to give it another try.

Yelp
Cute place. Ordered at the register, nothing special for service. They brought our food to our table. Ordered two breakfast burritos and two lattes $55. Quite expensive for breakfast. Breakfast burrito was ok, nothing special. Latte was good! I don't mind paying extra for great food. Good overpriced food, not so much.

Yelp
Food, atmosphere, timeliness, and staff were all excellent! So nice to have friendly service! Seems to be rare these days.

Yelp
The food was good but the ambiance is what makes this place great, check out the gift shop upstairs and take something home to remember this place!

Yelp
Great staff, delicious coffee, and their food is yummy, healthy, and perfect pre or post hike!

Yelp
I knew I wanted to eat here during our visit, but I didn't anticipate to come here every day! We had multiple breakfasts here and ordered lunch to go one day. I love the staff and the vibes are just very laid back. On a typical day you grab a menu, seat yourself, then order at the counter (busier days you have to wait to be seated). I got a different latte every day, tried hot and iced. The hot comes out very hot so I'd typically take the rest to go. I love love love that you get a different cup every time it's just kinda whatever they have, it just fits. We enjoyed all our food! The sandwiches we ordered with the garlic aioli were sooo good. My favorite breakfast item was the egg, spinach, bacon bagel! They have a cute small gift shop upstairs. Parking is limited but we didn't have a problem most days. This place is such very relaxing and laid back we loved visiting during our trip! It was the perfect 'regular' spot!
google avatar

Angela R.

Yelp
They have decent breakfasts but also some healthy options, and both are very tasty! I had the veggies quiche, and my fiance had the pancakes and something else he loved. We took a carrot cake to eat after a hike, and it was the best after-hike reward! The cake was moist, fluffy, and delish - somewhat sweet, but I had a sweet tooth after a long hike. The pudding looks very good too. Next time! The service is a tad slow, so go there with some time to spare. It is a popular spot, so there might be a line. There was plenty of sitting space inside and outside.

Yelp
I had found this place from someone else's travel blog. This place was cute and the stained glass windows were beautiful. I wouldn't say it was something that blew us away but it got us fed and caffeinated for our day exploring around town.

Stephanie O.

Yelp
Just so you know, you are ordering at the counter whether you get a table inside or find one outside. There is no table service. Wish I had known this as I would have just ordered instead of waiting 45 min and then having to stand in line again. Not a huge deal overall but knowing going in changes your approach. Once you order the food comes out quick. Overall cute atmosphere. The Egg Spinach Bacon Bagel was delicious. We also got the Gorged Omelette which was pretty good. But adding the French Kissed Satan Hot Sauce made it so good.
google avatar

Greg W.

Yelp
Waited 45 minutes for a table only to be told once we were sat that we then needed to stand in line for 20 minutes to order our food. Food is ok not great. Staff is friendly minus the lady working the bar.
google avatar

Yelp
Adorable spot that we were fortunate enough to experience while in town doing the Gauley. The music was great, the weather was perfection, the coffee was yummy and the bagel Sammy's were a dream! No alcohol allowed in the lower outside area (picnic tables) due to the licensing but this didn't bother me since I was drinking coffee.

Amelia H.

Yelp
The food was exceptional. I loved the vegan optioned and the coffee was SO SO SO GOOD. I got the salted caramel latte and it was so so yummy. The service was great and the people were friendly. The vibes of the place were so cute! I loved the location and the decorations

Rebellious T.

Yelp
They have no Working heat in this cafe! I was standing in line freezing my ass off waiting on my order. I just feel sorry for those hard working girls in there having to shiver and work in such a cold establishment that does not have working heating. #dobetter

Yelp
The largest and most active business in this town (which surprisingly was not that crowded otherwise given the proximity to such splendid outdoor experiences), this cafe offers the ambiance of a small church and an eclectic brunch menu. I found a tofu scramble. The options for vegetarian, not overly sweet, and at least some protein are not abundant in this part of the country, so this was a win for me. The chili powder flavored stir-fry was actually better without the salsa on the side than with. There were also potatoes and spinach; cooked spinach is never as good as fresh, but it's something. Some white bread on the side helped mop things up. Both the indoor and outdoor seating were packed on my visit, and it seems a place that-while not amazing-is likely to appeal to most people.

Yelp
We thought it was a great spot for lunch. Came on a Tues around noon between hikes and we were able to get a seat inside. They have an outside patio, but were doing some work on it - so it was closed on this particular day. You order at the counter, then take a seat and they bring your order to the table They had decent selection of sandwiches and panini's. My bride ordered the Vegetarian Panini and added turkey and I ordered the Turkey Reuben. They were healthy portions and came with chips and pickles on the side. Service was friendly and fast. We would come again when in the area.

Yelp
Interesting place to be sure. We had breakfast and I think my wife enjoyed hers better than I did. Seems to be pretty popular with both the locals and tourists.
google avatar

Kristen H.

Yelp
I love this place. The people watching is always one of my favorite activities along with the variety of hot sauces. The staff are so fun and friendly and clearly work so hard. If you come, get some of their coffee drinks and cocktails! The drinks are my favorite part. The food is nice but never knocks my socks off. But the ambiance of sitting under the stained glass and bookshelves more than makes up for this. Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Jenifer W.

Yelp
Greeted by hostess, super friendly! Short wait for breakfast. They operate like a Panera Bread, order first and food get brought out to your table. They were busy so, a bit of a wait. Not a problem as they are only a few sit down options for breakfast in town. We were in a bit of a rush because we had an activity planned so, we had to rush to eat. That's on us, we should have come earlier. Coffee drinks were great and breakfast was just okay. Nothing to rave home about but, good. Would come back for their cappuccino with nut & honey and take it to- go
google avatar

Grace K.

Yelp
The perfect place to go! They have the best options and the greatest atmosphere. It's a church that has been converted into a restaurant and coffee shop. Our family loves browsing the book section! The carrot cake and berry cobbler are our favorite desserts!
google avatar

Private C.

Yelp
No place like it. Very unique. Loved how they converted an old church into a restaurant and bar.
google avatar

Becky B.

Yelp
Cute place in an old church. Cool, fun, friendly employees. Food was good, except they forgot the bacon on my turkey bacon sandwich but they brought out four hearty pieces when I pointed it out. I really came here to talk about the carrot cake, which I got to-go on my way out. I watched the kid take the cake out of the refrigerated case, cut off a (small) piece, plop it in the to-go container and then walk away from me. He walked over to the bar where a lady (much to my horror) squeezed and squirted something all over the carrot cake. Then he closed the container, walked back and presented it to me. Me: did you just put something on my carrot cake? Him: yes. Me: what? Him: caramel Me, gasping in horror: CARAMEL? On my cake? Him, defensive: Yes, that's how we always serve it. Me, takes my $7 cake and leaves, thinking GROSS. But guess what!? It was soooo good. We wolfed it down. Delicious. Try new things!

Yelp
Super cool spot! Friendly folks, good vibes, and great food. We ordered the Guides Choice and the Biscuits n Gravy Special. Every plate we saw come out looked amazing, especially the breakfast sandwiches...next time!!

Traci G.

Yelp
Great service and food in a cute small town! Full coffee bar too! Homemade food, not processed.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
I went back and tried their carrot cake. It is the beat ever! I am not sure what the frosting is. It is not very sweet but is truly amazing!
google avatar

Ryan J.

Yelp
If a coffee shop is going to employ extremely rude people, they better at least know how to not scald milk beyond recognition. I can deal with rude people, do it everyday. $5 for a crappy chai, that's where I draw the line!
google avatar

Lizzy O.

Yelp
We came here for breakfast with a large party. The food here is amazing!! The staff is very friendly. Love that it's in an old church. The stained glass is beautiful. The cinnamon rolls are fluffy and just deeeelicious. I had the vegetarian omelette with potatoes and toast. Everyone in our party loved their food. This is a local gem and we will be returning next time we are in town!
google avatar

George F.

Yelp
We went for the atmosphere and roasted from the lack of air conditioning. Stopped in for lunch after walking the bridge. Like too many new places these days, we were given menus and were told to order at the counter. Not sure why this is such a thing - they still hire people to walk around to clean up - I'm more likely to leave a great tip if someone visits my table and brings my food. Otherwise, it's not much different than fast food. The atmosphere was wonderful. Very nice little place to spend some time. Food was good, people were very friendly. However... it was approaching 90° outside - the only difference inside was the lack of a breeze. We stayed and ate, but I don't think I'd go back again in the middle of summer.
google avatar

Kari J.

Yelp
Good service. Very cool place. Long wait for food, but staff was accommodating and friendly. Food was good. GF options.

Jane C.

Yelp
we traveled an hour to this place to eat the Shrimp and grits advertised. The picture looked greatm but they had run out by 11 AM .The post said nothing about " as long As it lasts." I got a panini. it was so so. nothing I'd drive an hour for.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
The old church nourished souls & now nourishes bodies in this mountain hippie town. Used books and food are offered, and the interior may appear to be trying too hard for the bohemian vibe, but order coffee and breakfast. The food is as unique and flavorful as the decor. Flaky french toast croissants are a must. Ooey gooey cinnamon rolls are worth the diabetes. Head upstairs for the gift store, and you can take home a bag of coffee beans. And books!
google avatar

Diane B.

Yelp
Thanks to our Air BNB hosts for recommending this place. After days of grab-and-go breakfasts before hitting the hiking trails, we were ready for a nice breakfast before hitting the road to head home. In addition to the stained glass, the place has lots of books and art to hold your interest, as well as a nice gift shop upstairs. Not that you'll need to be entertained for long - the service was very prompt. Orders are placed at the register and it seems coffee drinks were being put out for pick-up while most customers were still paying. I could argue that my tofu wasn't "scrambled," but it doesn't matter - it was delicious and served up with plenty of vegetables and high-quality gluten-free bread. Coffee was delicious with free, self-service, refills. We hope to return to New River Gorge again - and will definitely make this our go-to breakfast.

Carol B.

Yelp
The restaurant, which appears to be an old church with stained glass windows, has a unique and inviting atmosphere. The food was also good.
google avatar

Ken G.

Yelp
Friendly staff, good food with decent prices. The peach cobbler cheesecake is the absolute best!
google avatar

Shadow S.

Yelp
What a unique place! Set in an old church building, this hipster restaurant is a cool place. Not my vibe, but I fell right into place here. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly. Menus are dropped off at table and you have to go up to the counter to order. They call out your order number and you have to go up to the bar to get your drinks. This is different than most restaurants, but worked really well here. The place has a neat look and feel as well. Food was phenomenal. It was the best part and i did not expect that. Highly recommend the hummus appetizer and chicken quesadilla. Also give the lavender soda a try. It's an unexpected hit! GO check this place out... even if you're not a weird hipster!
google avatar

Lizzie A.

Yelp
A must if you are in this area. Everybody is so nice the coffee is good and strong. The food is amazing, also they have many sugar free coffee syrups which is nice for those you have to go without sugar. I would describe the ambiance as homey maximalism.

Kiera N.

Yelp
This was soooo good and yummy i got the chicken quesadilla and it was so good and filled me up and everyone else i think at my table liked their food too. The staff was super nice and was very attentive to everything we needed and kept us updated on our food. And it was overall really cute and like aesthetically pleasing in there. Very very nice i loveeddd it
google avatar

Kasturi S.

Yelp
The cafe is very cute and unique. The food is fresh and tasty, and has decent vegetarian options. The mushroom sandwich was our fav and the coffee there is very food too. They have an amazing collection of coffee beans from all over the world. Yeah, world. And they have a self help coffee grinder as well, I was very impressed.
google avatar

Jeneane B.

Yelp
Hubby and I were in the area for a long weekend last fall and we ate here for breakfast twice. We had planned on breakfast elsewhere the second morning, but the other place is closed Mondays. My breakfast the first day was really good - the croissant French toast. I dug in so fast I forgot to take a picture! Hubby got the croissant sandwich and we got a side of potatoes to share, which were lackluster and a bit cool. The serving time hubby got a bagel sandwich, which was good, and I had a veggie omelet which was okay. Hubby got a Mimosas and I got spiked coffee both days, the bartender on the second morning made better (stronger) drinks... ;-)

Yelp
Dining at an old church that was turned into restaurant was a unique experience. While the food was decent and didn't necessarily stand out, it was still enjoyable. The service was good, with attentive staff providing helpful recommendations and ensuring a pleasant dining experience. For those seeking a memorable and distinctive dining destination that offers a mix of history, decent food, and good service, this place is worth a visit.

Tiffany G.

Yelp
This place is literally my soul on a plate and in a cup. Thankful to find someone who had Oatmilk locally while visiting from out of state. Had regular drip coffee, and it was awesome. Ordered a short stack of pancakes, with blueberries and a side of bacon. Texture was awesome, definitely fresh taste. Thought the pancakes were missing something from flavor profile, like something that wasn't making them pop. Also ordered The Farmers Breakfast- croissant made into French toast, scrambled eggs, and bacon- absolutely delicious!

Yelp
Cathedral Cafe is my favorite place to get breakfast in Fayetteville. It's a cute cafe that was once a cathedral. The stained glass windows are still intact. They have a pretty big menu and everything is reasonably priced. I've enjoyed everything that I have ordered so far. I've had the croissant French toast, the 5.10 breakfast (two eggs, toast, bacon or sausage, and home fries), and the breakfast burrito. They also serve good coffee, baked goods, and have a lunch menu, but I've never had the time to eat lunch here. Last time I went, I saw a sign for bottomless mimosas on Sundays. Above the cafe, there is a smoothie vendor, which I have yet to try. During this covid-19 time, everyone has to wear a mask inside unless you're eating. The cafe is at 50% capacity as the tables are now six feet apart. There is also outdoor seating. If you come here the weekends during the summer, it'll be packed with climbers. There are plenty of free street parking.
