The Cathedral of San Rufino is dedicated to Assisi’s first bishop and patron saint, Rufinus, whose remains are kept in the crypt beneath the church, which you can see for a small fee. The current Romanesque structure dates to the 12th century and is notable for its well-preserved facade with carved lions, symbols, and biblical scenes. The interior has been modified over the centuries, blending medieval and later Baroque elements. The cathedral is also historically significant as the site where St. Francis and St. Clare were both baptized.

Lovely church, fabulous bell tower with views of Assisi. Experience where Francis and Clare were baptized. Some early Roman ruins under the church made visible. Great art as always!

May 2025. The cathedral is free to enter and worth visiting, but it also has a museum and tower that you can access for a fee. The museum has a guide / recommended path so you don't miss anything. The view from the tower is very nice, plus you are able to get close to the church bells.

Beautiful Cathedral. Very quiet and cool. It has glass floor panel where you can see down to the ancient Roman tunnels.

The Cathedral of San Rufino is beautiful and steeped in history. It gets busy, especially since admission is free, but the visit is quick and absolutely worthwhile. Definitely worth a stop while exploring Assisi.

Fabulous architecture and paintings. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take photos inside the cathedral, but it's right to respect the people and mass, therefor it's ok.

Beautiful Church! You get to see the place St Francis was baptised and received sanctifying grace. Why wouldn’t you go here?

Cappella delle Rose in this medieval Cathedral, fine frescoes by Tiberio d'Assisi, from 1518, depicting scenes from the Saint's life are the main attraction. The multi-paneled canvas Madonna of the Rosary, painted in 1581 by Lorenzo Doni, paintings by Jacopo della Quercia and Filippo Lippi, highlights of this place
