"In the Name of Matthew Few local D.C. residents know about St. Matthews Cathedral, and I would really be surprised if any visitors to D.C. knew about it, since it’s the National Cathedral that gets the mention in the guidebooks. That’s too bad, really, because this tiny Catholic church, with its unassuming exterior, has a glorious interior that few people see and appreciate. (Believe it or not, I get to come here for my Spanish classes.) Although it is a neighborhood church, it's had its moments in the national spotlight. There have been many funeral services held here for notable people, including President Kennedy. For a cathedral, it has a very small interior—there are only seven chapels. The walls and ceiling are decorated with stunning images of angels and saints, including Matthew, rendered in marble and mosaic. The center dome helps to make the space feel larger. Last, but not least, there is a beautiful organ that is often featured in concerts and recitals; the sound of the music that pours forth from it is amazing! If you are visiting from out of town, I would recommend going to the church in the late morning. Then walk back toward the White House, stopping for lunch in McPherson Square. That’s where some of D.C.’s fleet of food trucks parks every day. Find a spot in the park to eat and enjoy your time in D.C.! The church is located about five blocks north of the White House and is a short walk from the Farragut North Metro station."

Cathedral of St. Matthew is breathtakingly beautiful! A few tips for people who are attending a wedding here like I did: On the weekends street parking is available for as little as $5 for 2 hours if you can find it but many garages near the cathedral are closed on weekends so book a spot on an app like parkwhiz if you really want indoor parking. The cathedral has no narthex or foyer/lobby area so if you arrive late to the wedding when you open those front doors be prepared for the possibility of the bride or groom turning their head to watch you enter!

Google
It's beautiful. It was nice to be able to visit during the day on weekdays and look around quietly, (Paid parking in the parking building right next to it) A beautiful cathedral located in the middle of the city center, where you can walk to restaurants, chocolate shops, and bakeries together.

Google
Cathedral of St. Matthew is absolutely stunning! The architecture is breathtaking, with intricate details and beautiful stained glass that create a peaceful, awe-inspiring atmosphere. The interior is just as impressive, with its grand dome and elegant design. A must-visit for anyone appreciating history, art, or simply a serene place to reflect.

Google
Absolutely beautiful cathedral - look at the photos as they speak for themselves. The organ is beautiful; we heard it at Sunday mass

Google
Beautiful architecture, Jesus is truly present in the Mass. Beware that the tabernacle is off to the side, which makes the church feel empty. I wish it would be put in the correct space. Also know that the use of Extraordinary ministers was done for the daily Mass I attended. 20 or so people, the minister is not needed or a good idea.

Google
Beautiful church designed by C. Grant LaFarge (1862-1938) and completed in 1913. In 1939 it became the cathedral of the newly established Archdiocese of Washington. The funeral of President John F. Kennedy took place here on November 25, 1963. Beautiful interior with a Byzantine flavor.

Google
The simple facade of this cathedral contrasts with the awe-inspiring interior. It has grandeur but retains solemnity. There are many architectural details to admire: from the ornate ceiling, the skylit dome, the chapels and the carvings. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Google
The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C., is highly regarded for its beautiful interior and peaceful atmosphere, though some find its exterior less impressive. Visitors praise its stunning mosaics, artwork, and architecture, particularly in the side chapels and behind the altar. The cathedral is also noted for its welcoming community and is a popular venue for weddings and other ceremonie

Yelp
If you have the opportunity to celebrate Mass here, pls take it! It is a wonderful experience at a beautiful church. We had the privilege of attending a Palm Sunday service and wow. We were so grateful to be a part of it. The choir was outstanding and there is plenty of room to accommodate everyone. I highly recommend attending!

Yelp
This is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have seen. They had a guest priest from Zambia. This is also where president JFK had his funeral service. Mass was absolutely beautiful.

Yelp
One of the most beautiful cathedrals I have visited. The artisans who created the fantastic interior of Saint Matthews were imported from Italy in the 1800s. The mosaics, statues, and paintings are phenomenal and very beautiful. There is a secret altar above. Access is on the right side of the main altar. Take the stairs and you'll find a small altar featuring the four archangels. It has a wonderful view of the interior of the Cathedral from above. This used to be my home perish when I lived in DC. There is a large Spanish population, and I have attended masses in English, Spanish, and Latin. This is also where the funeral mass of President John F. Kennedy took place. It is memorialized and the floor in front of the altar where his casket stood. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary is perhaps the most beautiful. The baptismal font is also gorgeous. There are lots of masses, and confession is regularly scheduled. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful cathedral.

Yelp
It's an absolutely stunning Catholic church located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington D.C. The interior design, artwork, decoration, and architectural details were magnificent. A visit to this cathedral should be on everyone's list when in D.C.

Yelp
I've been looking for a new place to worship since I moved to Washington DC about a year ago. Normally I prefer small intimate churches like St Mary's which I frequented in Annapolis for a few years but I enjoyed mass at this cathedral. In the true sense of a cathedral I felt like I was at mass in one of the great cathedrals in Rome. The frescos, art, architecture and the dome had me speechless. I couldn't help but feel the spirit being here. Lately I've been making a point of using public transit whenever possible so I was ecstatic when I realized I could get here by riding a few stops on the redline. There is plenty of street parking but my preference is usually to do public transit whenever possible.

Yelp
A Christmas Day Yelp Review! One phone call conversation with one of the residing priests here convinced my fiance and I that our long search for a new church home would be over. Since then, we have met a few other church officials through our sacrament of marriage classes and have only fell the place even more. Even though I am far from perfect or even becoming a regular church goer, they still have made me feel like family. They speak the good word of the Lord and they do it well -- and not in a pushy way at all. This historic church is beautiful with it's high vaulted ceilings and mosaic portraiture. Their organ pipes are the biggest I have ever seen and their choir sends shivers down my spine. This cathedral is famous for being the church that presided over JFK's funeral. To be frank, going to church isn't the first thing I choose to do on a Sunday morning but it's warm spirit and beautiful atmosphere make going a whole lot easier (not to mention all the fun brunch places that are within walking distance!).

Yelp
This place is great, it's huge, painting everywhere you look, some statues that look like they are made out of marble (I'm not an expert on rocks, so I don't know...), and every once in a while, someone would sing a song you would hear on Christmas Mass. Everything was amazing.

Yelp
Witnessed a beautiful ordination of Three former Episcopalian priests coming into the Catholic faith (with their congregations) officiated by Archbishop Cardinal Wuerl. Beautiful ceremony.

Yelp
Easter mass review: This church is so beautiful. The outside does not do the building justice. My father was a pastor so I have spent a lot of time in churches. This one is worth a visit. The paintings and artwork are gorgeous. There are so many little rooms and pictures that you need about 20 minutes to walk all around the sanctuary. The church staff are quite nice. Anyone is happy to answer questions. The Easter service was special. The Very Rev. James Greenfield gave the homily. He read from the book, "I love you this much." The message of family connection was heart warming. Even if you don't attend a mass, it is worth peeking inside. You don't have to be Catholic to appreciate this sacred space. (I bring chair pads when sitting in wooden pews.)

Yelp
Was up in DC for the national peace officer's memorial and attended mass on Sunday morning. I was fascinated by the architecture and artwork of this historical house of worship. Mass was delivered very nicely. Glad I had the opportunity to visit!

Yelp
Simply my favorite place to be for Ash Wednesday. A majestic cathedral where I feel at peace as I once again enjoy mass. There were not as many TV cameras this year. As I was waiting for mass to begin, I briefly wondered why. Kindness and patience were on full display this year. I arrived early and stood next to a sweet woman as we patiently waited for the church goers from the previous mass to exit. This woman became the holder of the door for literally hundreds parishioners. She smiled all the while. All in all a lovely interlude in the midst of a busy work day.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok, with 64 check ins under my belt, I think I've earned the right to update my review... I'll just add these notes: 1. Best seats to hear the homily are down front and to the left. The acoustics can befuddle in other areas... 2. The tabernacle is in it's own alcove to the left of the altar, not directly behind it like at many churches. 3. This is the seat of the Archbishop of Washington. Booya.

Yelp
*Review for the church* I did not have mass here. I walked in on a weekday to see how beautiful the interior was. I love old churches and cathedrals, and this was one that definitely needed to be seen. Some of the highlights of the sanctuary that really drew me in was the beautiful stained glass windows, the lovely mosaics, the huge dome above head, and the inscription in the floor where John F. Kennedy's casket laid during his funeral at the church. It was pretty desolate when I went in making it more of an intimate experience for me.I went up to the alter where I prayed then proceeded to look around. I learned that this is the archdiocese church for the greater DC area. I should mention that this is separate from Baltimore's archdiocese with each DC and Baltimore having their own, respectively. Even though I am Methodist; I definitely see myself venturing here to experience mass sometime eventually. It is a stunning place and very peaceful.

Yelp
This is my favorite church so far in about the 7 or so I have attended thus far in DC. Absolutely beautiful place that makes me feel like I'm in Europe with high ceilings and stunning artistry. Lovely service, engaging sermon, and a welcoming community. While it's not as close as I'd like it to be, it's a pretty nice choice as it is in Dupont and carries the convenience of so many brunch spots around. What a joy! :)

Yelp
Wow, an incredible church! If you admire great architecture and art, this is a must-see. The exterior of the building has a nice and unique design while the interior has some fantastic frescoes and mosaics. Whether or not you're Catholic/Christian/whatever, anyone can appreciate the art.
google avatar

Celeste A.

Yelp
Mass here is straight up boring, just like Nick said. If you are into mosaic tile mural art... HOLY MOLEY! The Saint Francis wall o tile is a masterpiece work of art. I was floored by it. I stole pictures from the parish website.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful building. Wonderful artwork on the walls. Lots of statues. Easter service was packed when we went. Lines all the way down the block from both directions into the church. Lovely service, talented choir and organist. The brass band was great as well - probably only there for the big holidays. The mass lasted just over an hour. Probably would have been a bit longer, but the previous mass ran long and our service started late. There was another service scheduled for 10 minutes after our finished, so we couldn't stick around too long to admire the church itself. They offered a mass in Spanish on Easter. Again, not sure if that's a regular or holiday thing.

Yelp
Inside Beautiful architecture. Domes, High Ceilings, Corinthian columns, and beautiful artwork. This is the place where JFK's funeral mass. Daily mass at 12:30 and other times. Daily Confession 12:00 to 12:30. St. Matthew would be proud =)

Yelp
Stumbled into this church walking around town. I was surprised how beautiful it is inside.

Yelp
I've never attended service/mass here, but...I will say this: good, cheap parking. Beats the meters ANY day -- ESPECIALLY during the week. Friendly attendants.

Yelp
The Catholic Cathedral of DC, seat of the Archbishop. St Matthew is a beautiful red brick Roman Catholic Church. It has the distinction of being famous for having conducted the requiem mass for President Kennedy. Inside you can find a round marker on the floor that designates where JFK's coffin lied during the service. The Cathedral itself is gorgeous inside. The chapel dedicated to St Francis of Assisi is one of the most beautiful of any church anywhere in the world. So peaceful and beautiful inside, definitely worth a visit to take in the art, architecture, and pay your respects.

Yelp
Amazing Cathedral a must stop !! Beautiful, impressive, historic. Two Papal visits and the Mads of a fallen president.

Yelp
I was in the DC area for reasons definitely above your pay grade. But all the subterfuge and counter-intelligence work took a little toll on my spirituality. Luckily, I found the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. What a church? At first, I thought I was in 18th century England. The interior of the church was simply beautiful. High Vaulted ceiling and corinthian columns adorn this spiritual refuge. I had the honor of attending Ash Wednesday here. It was a great service.

Yelp
St. Matthews Cathedral--or Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle--is the seat of the Archbishop of Washington. St. Matthew's Catheral is clearly distinct from the National Cathedral. The building is built in Romanesque and Byzantine styles while the National Cathedral is Gothic. St. Matthews is definitely smaller and more hidden since it is in the Dupont Circle area just off of Connecticut on Rhode Island. President Kennedy's funeral was held here as well as the recent funeral of Chief Justice Rehnquist. The church is also famous for its "Red Masses". Before the beginning of the Supreme Court's calendar on the first Monday of October, Justices of the Supreme Court, members of Congress and sometimes even the President himself attend mass.
google avatar

Christi D.

Yelp
St. Matthews is my local church. That in and of itself is amazing as one would think that this was a special church that fancy people went out of their way to get to. It's architecture and art are beautiful and historic to many, though slightly gaudy and representative of superfluous spending of the past for my taste. I think the homilies can be better in content and delivery, but the music is great under the acoustics, the staff is super friendly and several parishioners serve in many roles. I like that the church is involved with the community and how many activities are built within the month. Don't go here if you have little kids and want a kid-focused mass. Go here if you want to submerge yourself in traditional masses that are beautifully organized.

Yelp
tremendous church. Great history and the mass where the Kennedys go to worship. Would respectfully disagree with those that say the Mass is boring. Far from it. It's a mass, not a light show. A time for worship, great music, prayer and contemplation. It's only one hour, let's all check our ADD at the door, turn off our ipods and blackberrys, and devote our attention to something other then our own entertainment (just my own two cents) the 5:30 pm Sunday mass is often presided over by Father Greenfeld (Monsignor Jameson is excellent as well), an extremely charismatic Priest, many of the worshippers at this mass are very young (come over from GW) and I find it a very enriching experience.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
I was surprised to hear one if the reviewers didn't feel very welcome, I've tried several churches in the area and found this one to be the best for me. When I started going here I was single and in my early 20s, and I was extremely impressed with the young adult presence at this church. Lots of social programs and opportunities to get involved. Years later I got married here and my opinions of the church only got better. My pre-marriage counseling was great (seriously, even the husband agrees!) and most importantly was helpful. Planning a wedding there was simple, and our priest did a great job tailoring our ceremony to us.

Yelp
I absolutely love this cathedral. To me, it is very beautiful. This was my church for Sunday mass during the year I lived in downtown DC. I lived in Scott Circle, so it was less than a 10 minute walk from my place. This was the cathedral where JFK had his funeral services, so I always feel it is an honor to be able to attend mass here or stop by to pray. Unlike other services where I don't seem to understand much from the homily, here I always look forward to what the priests have to say. I also like the spirit of the community here. You will find a diverse community of all age ranges. Some of my fellow church-goers here tell me the Sunday 5 pm mass is the "singles" mass. 'Not sure if that's true...but I do find a lot of young adults at this mass. I think there is a young adults group though that goes to dinner after mass. It is nicely located in Dupont Circle close to many restaurants.

Yelp
Holy moley, what eye candy! The decor of this church is just GORGEOUS, very Romanesque with majestic murals. I attended the 530pm Sat service where there was a boy's choir, so awesome!....how they sing so angelically, like girls. I was pretty distracted during mass (like always) just looking around and thinking to myself, "this is where JFK's funeral was held." Actually, I also managed to squeeze in a mini nap when some fella started talking about stewardship.... So go for it churchgoers and curious Georgies, check out this cathedral already! May I recommend starting your night here with a little meditation before you go club crawling just around the corner! Oh, and stay clear of the lower right hand side, some smelly-ass hobo chills there. Kinda distracting when I was trying to get my prayer on. But hey, who knows, that could have been the face of God and I was completely disgusted. Anyways, enough from the preachers son. God Bless!

Yelp
I had the privilege of attending mass here for two months over the summer a couple years back. The inside of this place was very nicely decorated, and was certainly much different in style from the Basilica or the National Cathedral. Sometmes it would be difficult to hear in the very back during mass because of the echo, but that's about the only negative part about this place. I love how the organs sound in these types of churches though, it really tickles my senses for some reason. One time there were some anti-abortion activists protesting outside of the church that were up in arms over Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court. I still don't quite understand why they were protesting there, though...if anything they probably should have been outside of the Hart Senate Office Building where the confirmation hearings were going on! Also, there was always a homeless lady dressed in all black that we would see on the steps of this church almost on a daily basis, she always captured our attention when we would walk by. She was very well-groomed though and you might not guess she was homeless if you had just walked by, but we would see her there late at night after the doors to the church were locked. If anyone knows anything about her, I'd be curious to find out.

Yelp
Beautiful cathedral! Many options for Sunday mass but also open for reflection and silent prayer. Nice community that is welcoming of visitors. Organist and choir lovely.

Yelp
Very cute little church in DC. Attended part of a mass here, and it was a very calming experience. Will be back to enjoy its beauty!

Keri Lyn M.

Yelp
This is a beautiful cathedral! I always love popping in for a few minutes when I'm in the area and going for an occasional weekday mass. If you're in the area it's absolutely worth visiting and looking around the chapels inside (they're stunning!).
google avatar

Ryan E.

Yelp
If you like good liturgy, I highly recommend the 10AM Sunday Mass. It is a Novus Ordo in Latin. Just watch out for the fecal smelling and rude bums outside.
google avatar

Jacquelyn D.

Yelp
The outside doesn't give it away, but this is a Beautiful church!
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
This church is absolutely stunning. Complete with it's high vaulted ceilings, mosaic detail and ornamental stained glass windows, this is by far one of the most beautiful churches that I have visited in the U.S. The masses are wonderful as is the lovely music performed by skilled musicians. All in all, I highly recommend this church.
google avatar

Yelp
The Cardinal Whuerl knows me by sight. Such a beautiful church for a family wedding by experience. The location is getting crowded though. Monsenior Sal down the street is my good friend. Regulars.

Mark G.

Yelp
Absolutely magnificent church, any tourist might want to pop in. The paintings and artwork are amazing. The Red Mass is held here prior to the opening of the Supreme Court October term. This Church not surprisingly has been home to visits by US Presidents. John F Kennedy's requiem mass was celebrated here on Nov. 25, 1963. The Church was built in the 1890s and completed in 1913.
google avatar

Rust C.

Yelp
An excellent location for meditative purposes. I come here to contemplate the moment before the crucifixion of Jesus. To determine whether we still have a purpose. To see whether there is still light. The church.... this one in particular.... it's where you can see that the light's winning.
google avatar

Nick R.

Yelp
True, all the important church functions happen here. This is also where Bush went to mourn John Paul II's death. The church is certainly beautiful. Its also convenient for Holy Days if you work downtown, but I always find the homilies to be dry and uninspiring here. I suppose its better than the amazingly cold and impersonal Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate conception near Catholic University's campus. Basically five stars for beauty and star watching, zero stars for spirituality.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
i stood during the entire easter mass. the only other place i've ever had to stand for the duration of a mass due to the lack of seats is the philippines. i'm thrilled that a historic and gorgeous catholic church is minutes away from my doorstep, but i simply haven't found my connection with it yet. i also find the service times to be a little awkward. you can either wake up earlier than you'd like to on a sunday and go to the 830am mass (and be far too early for brunch), or go to the 1130am mass (which is interpreted for the deaf) and be pushing brunch into lunch. the 10am mass is in latin, and though i took two years of it and excelled, i know my mind would just wander off the entire time. it's wonderful to be able to call this my place of worship in dc, but it's just missing a certain je ne sais quoi for me.
google avatar

Angie G.

Yelp
The Cathedral itself is beautiful and mass is done wonderfully. My biggest con is no fault to the church but to the tourist who come in during mass and find no issues with talking and taking pictures during mass. Since the Cathedral is a welcoming place a tourist attraction this does occur, and can be bothersome to those at mass.
google avatar

Julia B.

Yelp
I attended a wedding here in May, and this church is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
A majestic historic cathedral in the heart of DC that serves as the mother church of the Archdiocese of Washington, the entire building glimmers with a sense of prestige, artistic mastery, architectural beauty, historical relics, and even American history with an engraved tribute to JFK on the marble floor where his casket once laid during his funeral mass. Even if you are not catholic, this cathedral is worth a visit, all are welcome, the building normally remains open outside of mass times for public viewing. May god bless all my fellow Yelpers!

J T.

Yelp
Beautiful church. Vibrant church community. Many services, bible studies etc. Only church around with many daily masses including Saturday morning. Reflect on JFK mass while visiting. In front of alter is writing on flooring with JFK remembrance.
google avatar

Yelp
It's really surprising what hides in a big city. Step inside this mother church and let me know if you're not happy. It shines. Acoustics sound great with choral works. Architecturally exciting. Test drive your first mass here.

Yelp
Beautiful Church. You may pass it every day and not even know - take a peek inside.

Katie Z.

Yelp
Yeah, I'm doing it. I'm giving a less-than-5-star review to a CHURCH! Pros: The interior of the church is absolutely beautiful. I also enjoy that there are several mass times and they offer masses in several languages, including interpretations in sign language. Cons: I am a recent transplant to DC looking for a Catholic church to join. I know that you can register to be a parishioner online, but I wanted to get to speak with a priest at St Matthew's Cathedral, and establish some kind of personal connection before my fiance and I took the plunge. We wanted to find the right fit! I both called to speak with a priest and showed up at the rectory during hours of operation and was turned away saying that the priest would call me back. The ladies in the rectory were not very friendly either. I think we'll continue our search! I prefer to trade all of the glitz and glam of the interior of Cathedral of St Matthew in exchange for a more friendly community to worship in!
google avatar

Shanley W.

Yelp
We got really lost and somehow ended up passing the church, and we just had to stop. It's amazingly beautiful! I'm not religious, and we didn't stay for the service, just did a quick peek, but I'm glad we did, I'm a big sucker for this kind of architecture and decor.
