It contains surprisingly large amount of art works, in particular the silver altar that is in a separate chapel. Get the audio guide and you will learn so much more about the art works and history of the cathedral. For example Boccaccio’s master, Dante’s close friend, Cino da Pistoia is buried there.

Beautiful cathedral with very interesting artefacts. It is worth visiting the crypt to see the remains of the Roman villa that predates the cathedral. The chapel of Santiago is difficult to access but is wonderful if you have an interest in walking a camino. A fragment of St James skull and the skull of his mother, Mary Salome, are contained in the chapel. It is free to enter.

Entry to the cathedral is free, but you can buy tickets for an audio guide of the cathedral and a tour of the bell tower in the Battistero, which is across the street. There are no signs for the bell tower tour time, but during May it was at 12.30. So arrive at 12.15. If no one is at the ticket desk, please wait a few minutes. The clerk takes visitors to the cathedral to get their audio tour started. Lovely staff! Thank you so much.

This imposing cathedral is built in Romanesque style with three naves divided by stone pillars, a raised presbytery and crypt. The central nave has fourteenth century wooden ceiling. The Duomo, next to the beautiful bell tower. The church was subsequently re-named after San Zeno, who was much loved by the leading Longobard population. Other saints associated with this church are San Felice, San Ruffino and San Proculo.
