Caupona Pompei Ristorante

Wonderful place located near the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. They offer a themed menu that recreates Roman meals, allowing guests to experience the flavors that the ancient Romans once ate. The staff is very attentive and patient. We went with two small children and they treated us with great respect. Loved the experience

Something truly unique, the food was great, i highly recommend the Gladiator menu. At the time we were there, they only served the Gladiator and Eros menu, nothing a la carte. The atmosphere is amazing, for free you can dress up in either a senator or a patrona costume. Real nice experience. Prices reasonable, 7 euros for a starter, about 18 euros for a main dish

Truly genuine 5 star experience of a ancient dinner in Roman empire. The service was delightful offer by Mr. Augusto and the food, ambience, architecture and music was like a perfect match for a back to the past experience. Highly recommend this experience with friends and family. The food is coming in big plates.

Exelent experience and food. You will fill like going back in time with authentic menu with ingredients available from Roman times (no tomato, pasta, potatoes, etc.). Service is second to none. Will surely recommend on your visit to the area.

this place is a hidden gem in Pompeii. Our waiters Augusto and Cortino, made our experience unforgettable. The tomahawk steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked right at the table. The history and atmosphere made our experience completely magical.

The atmosphere was wonderful, with soft background music. We dined outdoors, surrounded by greenery. The waiters were very attentive. When we visited Pompeii, there were actors dressed in period costumes, and similar outfits were available at this restaurant as well. The waiters even suggested that we could try them on if we wanted. It was a nice experience. The food was delicious, and after touring the archaeological site, it was a great place to relax and unwind.

The atmosphere is cozy yet refined, and the service is attentive without being intrusive. Every dish we tried was full of flavor and beautifully presented, but the steak tartare stood out as the highlight — perfectly seasoned, fresh, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. You can tell the chefs take real pride in the quality of their ingredients and preparation. The only downside is that it’s a bit on the pricey side, especially compared to other local spots. However, given the excellent food and authentic Roman character, it still feels worth it for a special night out. A great choice for anyone looking to experience genuine Roman cuisine with top-notch flavor and atmosphere.

Tourist trap! Our tour guide recommended it and once we got there… we only saw tourists with their tour guides. Good was ok but clearly not worth what we paid. Thai massage kind of music, waiters dressed up in medieval tunics….

This was a fantastic experience. We just finished a tour of Pompeii and found this restaurant. It is truly an once in a lifetime experience. It felt like we were back in ancient times. We dressed in togas and the paintings and sculptures reminded us of the ruins we just visited. And the food... the food was awesome. We had the ossobuco and pasta and it was delicious. Augusto our host was warm and welcoming and made us feel like home. If you are looking for good food, good atmosphere and good people, come to Caupano

We love this place!! You get to dress up like ancient Romans and eat what they used to eat!! The food is fantastic!!! They have different menus available. Make sure to check them!!! The fish was so fresh!!! The bread looks like the same carbonized one they had in the archeological museum across the road. The service is fantastic!! The owner, cook and server are sooo nice!!! It's kinda hard to find the restaurant. You have to go down a side street across the archeological site of Pompeii. It's a few hundred yards so don't give up too fast. They do have parking in front of the restaurant.

I learned here that ancient Roman food isn't really for me. But the overall experience-- from the atmosphere to the dishes lovingly recreated from ancient recipes-- was exquisite.

A memorable dining experience! Just down the hill from Pompeii, this was a perfect capstone to our visit. My wife and I ate from the ancient seafood menu, and I was pleasantly surprised at the variety and flavors of the dishes. We started with some sort of chicken croquets, followed by seared tuna (excellent!), fried squid on cold cereal (surprisingly delicious), sea bass with arugula (tasty), and sweet cheese with figs (too sweet for me but my wife enjoyed) The Roman style building, fun costumes, and delightful staff made this a unique dining experience on our tour of Italy. Recommended!

Made a reservation for lunch, although I'm not sure if a reservation was needed since it wasn't crowded when we arrived. The ambience of the restaurant was super cute, and the wait staff was dressed up in tunics. When we arrived, the waiter talked to us about some of the frescoes at the restaurant and seated us at our table. I got the slaves menu, which overall was an interesting experience although not the tastiest food I've ever had. I think my favorites were the appetizer (a croquette thing) and the dessert. The bread was a little dry and not flavorful. The chicken dish was an interesting flavor, but also a little dry. The lentil soup was very large and hearty, but needed more flavor. I was expecting the lamb shank for the main meal, but unfortunately, they swapped it out for pork, which was pretty dry. The tasting menu was fun, but I just chose the wrong tasting menu. My boyfriend got the seafood tasting menu, and that was delicious!

This was my second time at Caupona. First time with family. This is a fun place outside the gates of Pompeii. They have two types of menu- the regular and a preset Apician menu based of the recipes of Apicius, an ancient Roman cook. Both menus are excellent. The unique thing about the restaurant is the decor- set up to look like a Pompeiian inn- and the attire they offer to guests. So much fun. Reservations recommended.

Our driver recommended this gem in Pompei on our way to Positano. At first we weren't sure as we were being led down this long pathway to what looks like nothing lol. However, what we found to our left was a beautifully decorated Pompeian restaurant! The idea of the place was to help you travel back to the era that Pompei was around. Everything from the robe they offer the to beautiful glass decanter, you really feel like you are in Pompei. The food was delicious. From the bread to the freshest mozzarella in Italy, we already knew we were in for a treat with our entrees. Nothing more to say other than see our photos because the food was just as delicious as it looks. Ciao Caupona till next time.

Wow what an amazing experience and amazing food! I really felt like this was THE authentic Roman meal to get in Pompei. I got the risotto and pork dishes, along with some wine. The waiter had me dress up as a Roman with him too. Location is a little weird down an alley, but do not miss this place!

We stumbled upon this place after taking a chance on a dusty road away from the tourist strip after a long day of sightseeing at Pompeii. And I'm SO glad we took that chance. The service is excellent, attentive and yet not stifling. We opted for the "traditional Roman" five course meal, and I gotta say, you get your money's worth!! Five delicious, gourmet courses based on traditional Roman recipes (according to their website) and a most delicious spiced wine. All of this took place on a delightful, cool and shaded veranda that was peaceful. I honestly never wanted to leave! If you get a chance, check out the photos and the place. It was barely a ten minute walk from Pompeii and now we are stuffing ourselves back onto the Circumvesuviano and back to the bustle of Naples...but full of delicious wine and food. Highly recommend.

Kind and welcoming staff. No hard selling but happy to make recommendations. There are two pre fix options if you want to experience food that the Romans enjoyed back in the day. The atmosphere is also nice, and relaxing. Only downside is if you sit in the patio, there is smoking.

This was one of my favorite meals while visiting Italy. I would definitely recommend this resturant.

Excellent food. My wife had a pasta dish and I had the old Pompeii meal. We shared everything and each course was wonderful.

This place is hard to find, just off the train stop in Pompeii. We came here with three little ones, who were tired and hangry. The staff did a wonderful job of accommodating us and went out of their way to make us feel special. The food was delicious, fresh pasta and an option to try a traditional, ancient Pompeii meal. Friendly place for foreigners.

Beautiful venue, tucked away off the beaten pass. This gem is a true one of a kind experience! The service was incredible, from the moment we walked in. Only regret is we were not around for the dinner service. One of a kind! Go try it out.

Amazing place to spend an evening! Dress up like a Roman senator and his lady then have their special Ancient Rome 5 course meal for 35 euro each! It starts with marinated cauliflower olives and white beans. Then smoked salmon and a nice chickpea soup. Main course is best fish I ever had stuffed with zucchini. Finish off with delicious fresh ricotta cheese berries and roasted pine nut desert. Spiced ginger honey wine, prosecco with desert, and pomegranate liquor included. Great value, excellent food, fantastic service all in a nice Ancient Rome decor. Don't miss this place if you visit Pompeii. Back off the road between Vesuvius and the Pizzeria area
