18 Weird, Wondrous Places for Wine-Lovers Around the Globe

"If it is true that wine only gets better with age, then some of the very best wine in the world is hiding beneath the Hôpital civil in Strasbourg. In a 600-year-old wine cellar under the hospital is a barrel marked 1472, believed to be the oldest wine barrel in the world. The wine cellar was built in 1395, when the French hospital was moved outside of the city gate. Patients frequently paid for their treatment at the hospital by donating land to it, which was sometimes used for vineyards. Wine was often used for medical and religious purposes at that time, so having a wine cellar as part of a hospital was common, though not many remain today. Being underground and made largely of brick, the wine cellar was left intact after a fire destroyed the hospital in 1716. By 1725, the hospital had been rebuilt, and throughout the 1700s, patients at the hospital were given two litres of wine per day. The cellar walls are lined with giant, decoratively carved wooden barrels, mostly dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. One of them, though, is marked 1472. Kept behind a gate with a few other particularly old barrels of wine, it contains 450 litres of the oldest barrel-stored wine in the world, which has only been tasted three times in its history: 1576, in honor of a delegation from Switzerland; 1716, after the hospital burned down; and 1944, when Strasbourg was liberated by General Leclerc during World War II. Select Alsatian wine-makers are given permission to mature their wines in the legendary cellars. About 150,000 bottles of wine are produced by the cellar each year, and are considered among the best in the world. Profits from the sale of this wine go toward the purchase of medical equipment. Renovated in 1994, the cellar also now houses a wine museum, which includes the wine from 1472 and a wine press from the early 1600s. Wines produced in the cellar can be purchased in the cellar’s shop." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
I had a great experience visiting the historic cave section and the wine cellar. The entrance is free of charge and there was no queue on a Monday. Seeing the various wine barrels was very interesting, including the story on the barrel from 1472 which is also displayed. The wine from 1472 is still kept in a barrel in that cellar! On a side note, the Hospices building where the cellar is located is really interesting looking and the cellar also offers a cool break from the heat on hot days.

Google
Nice place to visit and learn about the history of the hospital cave and winemaking. A must visit for people who enjoy wine. There is a nice collection of wines from local producers to buy and 3 times per year there are organized wine tasting events. The entrance is free of charge and if you want an audio guide there is a small fee of 3 euro per person to rent it.

Google
I love this wine cave! Not only can you visit the cave with one of the oldest wine in France (1472), and the biggest barrel I've ever heard of (20,000 liters), but you can buy some amazing choice France wine. A great place to visit if you enjoy wine.

Google
Self-guided tour with an audio guide for 3€. We didn't inquire about any wine tastings. Interesting history, a short tunnel to explore, and a comprehensive wine shop representative of the area.

I absolutely adore this place! Every time I visit Strasbourg, I make sure to stop by here. it’s just too special to miss. It’s free to enter, which is a big plus, and it’s a place steeped in rich history. The cave was originally established in 1395, and it holds the oldest barrel-stored wine in the world, dating back to 1472! How amazing is that? Just knowing you’re standing among barrels that have been around for centuries adds a special charm to the place. The selection of wine is impressive—whether you’re into Alsace wines or curious about other French regions, they have it all. There’s a lot to explore in terms of both wines and the historical significance of the hospital itself, as it used to serve the city's sick and poor, with wine playing an important role in the treatments. The ambiance is fantastic—vaulted ceilings, atmospheric lighting, and rows upon rows of bottles. You’ll get to learn about wine production in Alsace, taste a few options, and even pick up some bottles to bring home. It’s not too touristy either, so it’s great if you want a more authentic experience in the heart of Strasbourg. Overall, it’s a brilliant stop if you enjoy history, want to learn about wine, or just fancy a unique experience in the city. Definitely add it to your itinerary!

Google
This was a great place to visit if you’re visiting Strasbourg! We visited during our stay in December and it was fascinating to learn about the incredible wines all kept under the hospital. Even if you don’t know a lot about wine (like me!) it was still a really interesting and worth while visit! Free admission and an array of cheap and expensive wines for sale in the shop too!

Yelp
Found this place while looking at a map of Strasbourg. If you don't speak/read French, the entrance is down the stairs directly under the sign. Once you open the door and you're hit with the aroma of a musty basement, you know you're in the right place! The cellar is free to tour but they also offer private experiences if you're interested. One was being set up while we were there and it seemed like pastries and wine, where I presume someone would then talk about the cave. Just inside the doorway from the store, on the right, there's a very old tunnel that was used to supply military with food and supplies. It's damp, dark, and very cool. It's a walk walk through. To the right are some barrels that were given as gifts, one to King Louis XVI, as well as a wine press from centuries ago. To the left is a long (ish) row of barrels leading to a gated section, a barrel dated 1472 and some information about it. If you're a fan of wine or just want to see a really old wine cellar, I'd recommend this. If for no other reason, it's free and you can say you did it!

Yelp
Cool spot worth a visit if you are in the area. It's not well marked, you need to pass the hospital gate and you'll see an old plaque mentioning the Cave, take the outside stairs leading to the basement level. The tram stop is on line D, Porte de l'hôpital, the best way is to use Google maps. The entrance is free, you can just read the signs or get the audio for 3 Euros. They also offer a selection of wines for sale.

Yelp
Located just outside the main touristy areas of La Petite France is this must-see attraction. If you like wine, history, architecture, the art of cooperage, or all of the above, you will enjoy visiting this underground urban wine cellar, home to one of the oldest wines in the world. It takes about 30 minutes with the excellent recorded audio tour (headsets were 3 Euros when we visited). In addition to its storied past, it is also a working cellar, used by some local vineyards to age current vintages, likely as a novelty but you must admit that is charming and all proceeds go to raise funds for their landlord, the local hospital above the cellar. As others have noted, it is not the easiest place to find. Put "1 Pl. de l'Hôpital, 67000 Strasbourg, France" in your Google Maps app and switch to street view, which may help you find the exterior staircase (on the yellow building) that leads down to the entrance.

Yelp
Historic wine cellar that is on the Strasbourg University Hospital grounds. A bit tricky to find but look for a set of stairs alongside one of the buildings that lead down to the basement. Inside you'll step into a little wine store followed by a small storage space with miscellaneous items for running daily operations. To the right is supposedly an ancient Roman tunnel that dead ends shortly after the overly anticipative start. Come back out the tunnel and walk a little further and you'll enter a much larger space that houses rows of giant wine barrels. Don't expect much in terms of signage or description of what you're looking at. Locked away behind bars are some really ancient wine barrels, including supposedly the oldest barrel-aged wine in the world from 1472. Who knows if this is a valid claim but it's a bit surreal to think about.

Yelp
If you like cellars, reasonably priced wine for a good cause, and free adventures, you'll love this. It's one of the oldest cellers holding one of the oldest bottles of wine -- from 1472. There aren't tour guides to take you through, but it's not expansive so you are pretty safe in your own hands. The cellars house wine that is sold in their shop and a portion is donated to the hospital it shares property with. So you can feel really good about yourself when you buy your favorite Alsace brand of wine.
