This 560-mile French Bike Trail Has Châteaus, Charming Houseboats, Surreal Gardens, and Limestone Wine Caves

"I visited Maison Laudacius, a wine cave carved into limestone in 1961 that holds up to two million bottles at about 12°C and now operates as a cooperative for 15 local winegrowers; Etienne Delannoy led a tasting of six Loire-representative wines (I’m no sommelier, but the wines were, unsurprisingly, good), and I learned about the region’s winemaking history—from monks making wine as early as the 5th century to Chinon grapes’ versatility and the phylloxera crisis and the adoption of American rootstock." - Joe Baur

We had a very informative tour of the caves and the production facility. It’s incredible how close you can get to the production line. After the tour, we had a wine tasting with Alex, who was incredibly helpful. She provided us with a wealth of information and made us feel very welcome. Obviously we ended up leaving with six bottles and a winecooler.

We visited today to escape the blistering heat, and were so delighted to find a comprehensive self guided tour and a tasting, all for free. The tour was fascinating and, due to being self led, we could linger where we felt most interested - the working production area. The tasting was a delight and our host was knowledgeable and friendly. She was kind and attentive and spoke numerous languages. The small shop stocked a great array of wines and picnic items and I especially recommend the Montlouis Demi-sec.

Super happy I made it here. What a great find. The quality was as good or better than anything else I was drinking in the this region. and the prices are something tat would make the tight budgeted smile. OS I would recommend to anyone out there as a must stop in the region. Fun, tasty and with some complexity to match your not going wrong stopping in here.

A really brilliant place to stop. The audio tour is very fascinating with lots of information crammed onto a relatively short tour. We tasted a few of the wines at the end of the tour and purchased a couple of bottles which were very reasonably priced. We visited on bikes, if this is also the case for ou be aware its a very steep hill down from the Loire a Velo Route, which then means you have to go back up. Would definitely say its worth the effort though.

I enjoyed the tour here - self guided with an audio and video component - thought it was well done and informative. Wine that I tried there was decent. Shop is nicely laid out and staff are friendly.

Visited in 1988 and happened to eat lunch next door today. Very fond memories of that visit long ago.
