CBX - VIVA - Review
If your flight leaves at 9am, I recommend arriving by 6am. (If you're alone, being dropped off and have experience with the process, you might be able to cut it down to 1.5hrs before flight departure.)
Yes. A bit of frustration to start. Asking us for immigration papers. (This is new to us). But there are several kiosk and the guy was very helpful. So, first gauntlet stop, you need to show Passport, DL, Citizenship. Then proceed into CBX. Next, another line. Show all the same and pass luggage thru scanner. Next, proceed to Mexico and another check and luggage scan. Then continue thru tunnel. Arrive at entry to flights and another luggage scan and remove any metal. Next, another walk, and to the gate.
Upon return to Tijuana International Airport, you proceed to the CBX tunnel. The first checkpoint there is a check of your I.D. (Passports) and CBX. Then proceed to next checkpoint and you need to scan both your Airline Boarding Pass (?) and CBX pass. The scanner allows only 5 seconds! You can't use the Airline app then the CBX app to show both within 5 seconds. So you must take screenshots so you can open in photos so you quickly swipe your each with 5 seconds. (Note: this information; this "tip" is nowhere to be found unless someone writes it on Yelp). Why we needed to show a boarding pass for a flight we just disembarked and no longer need it as we're done flying, does not make sense. They want you to "prove" you had flown? Unfortunately, we flew VIVA Aerobus, which is an economical airline and we had a connecting flight in Guadalajara from Monterey, so our 13 hour travel day had us already tired before beginning the gauntlet of inspections. Next, we proceed to the next and third inspection point, the U.S. port of entry. We have Sentri Global Entry but, at 2am it's not much advantage because you still get in line for baggage X-ray. The finally you are done and it's a short walk to the outdoors and your family waiting or your parked car. Another Note: We flew VIVA Aerobus. An economical airline, as I mentioned. We experienced 1-HR delays and last minute Gage changes when we left Tijuana, when we left Monterrey and when we left Guadalajara. So, each time we departed. The one from Guadalajara was delayed waiting for passenger (a family of three) which had tickets for seats already filled. So the VIVA agents asked passengers and "rearranged" things and found the family seats. Along with a lengthy refueling for which we sat inside the plane for 30 minutes, we finally taxi'd and waited our turn to take off from the very busy Guadalajara airport. Another note flying VIVA.. only Tijuana International used a PBD (Passenger Boarding Bridge). At Monterrey and Guadalajara Airports, we embarked and disembarked using stairs. Albeit 1960's nostalgic, we weren't feeling "retro" when we walked in the tarmac. Also, in Guadalajara, we explained we had a connecting flight. VIVA personnel pointed to a bus. Get onboard, they motioned. The bus, packed like a New York subway, took as across the airport. When we got off the bus, unfamiliar with where we were and worried we might miss out flight, we asked people "which way?". Believe it or not, we had to walk back to where we disembarked clear across the airport. I shit you not, it was about a mile. Needless to say, "connecting flights" are no longer on the menu of our infrequent fly-to vacations. Direct Flight or nothing.
