5 Best Day Trips from Chicago | Condé Nast Traveler

"Across the Cedarhurst Center's 90-acre campus, early 19th and 20th century paintings and modern sculpture are showcased. Most of the collection is from that of the museum's founders John and Eleanor Mitchell. Take a stroll or drive through the Goldman-Kuenz Sculpture Park for some perspective. Across the center’s 90-acre campus, works by John Kearney, Chakaia Booker, Deborah Masuoka, Tom Orr,and many more are thoughtfully placed for guests to develop a deeper appreciation for modern sculpture. Inside, the Bonan Permanent Collection is at the heart of the museum—an abundant celebration of paintings by early 19th and 20th century American masters, both renowned and unsung." - Jessi Roti, Joseph Hernandez

Cedarhurst Museum and the Mitchell House were absolutely PERFECT for the wedding! Cedarhurst staff was excellent to work with. Everyone was very kind and helpful. They were also very accommodating when we had to change location plans to indoor due to weather.

Beautiful artwork. Enjoyed this hidden gem hidden in Mt Vernon Illinois. The main gallery costs $5, but it is well worth the admission price. They also have a book of their collection available for $25. I purchased one and am enjoying the enriching additional information. They also have a walking path you can take to see many beautiful sculptures on your tour through the grounds with additional exhibits located in other buildings. Due to time constraints and my sister being in a wheelchair, we were limited to how much we could explore, but still enjoyed much they had to offer and enjoyed talking with museum staff about the history of the museum and their collection. I would highly recommend this activity for anyone who likes nature and art in general.

We attended an art fair here. We enjoyed ourselves, but everything was high end retail and we weren't expecting that. The property looked beautiful and I would love to go back and just walk around. If you hunt Pokemon this spot is loaded with Pokestops!!

We were traveling through and planned to stop. I had hope to be able to see more of the outdoor sculptures but being in a wheelchair they weren't easy to get close to. Most of the paths weren't paved. I did enjoy what I could see and the museum was very nice. I would like to visit again when in the area.

I always enjoy visiting Cedarhurst! I did not enter the museum today as I wanted to explore outside instead. I noticed recent updates to the grounds on this visit. The nature trails are no longer plain dirt, gravel has been added to the paths and other improvements such as labeled path markers. They’ve definitely stepped up their outdoor game. The lovely pond is pretty anytime of year, but it’s especially nice in the warmer weather when the fountain is flowing.

We went for the Christmas Light walk. It was excellent. About a mile walk in length with volunteers to help shepherd you in the proper direction. I can't believe it was only their 2nd year doing it. A+++ All around. Drinks for adults and kids alike. Lots of kid crafts are available also. We will be going back again for sure next year.

This is one of the most interesting places I've ever visited. There is no admission fee on Thursday's, and the rest of the week it only costs $5. If you have the chance, go check out the outdoor sculptures. They are truly amazing!

Enjoyed a lovely breakfast event hosted in the Mitchell House. What a stunning and historically significant venue. The restoration is beautiful and provides Mt. Vernon with another classy venue option for private events. Include it in your search!

Yelp
We visited at the Museum while at an overnight stay in Mt Vernon. After dinner we headed to the Center for their Thursday evening out door concert on the patio. (A regular event during the summer). Free of any cost. Plenty of parking and easy to find. The music on this particular evening was just OK but we were able to get into the museum to browse. It was perfect, since the crowd was outside there was no one in the galleries inside. Not a particulary large collection but some interesting art in the main gallery. Being from Louisville, the Derby City it was fun to see an exhibit of Derby Hats by Dianne Isbell displayed in the main foyer. The museum typically has a $5 admission fee but free entry on Thursdays. It was spacious, clean and well organized. I was inpressed for a museum of its size to have the collection it did. My love of art was really satiated with the outdoor sclupture garden. There must have been 30 outdoor scluptures (one of my favorite mediums of art) in the outdoors gardens surrounding the museum. About half of the scluptures are in an open field without a walkway so you must be careful walking in the grass. But some of the scluptures are situated around the lake in the back and the museum itself. So plenty to see, explore, entertain and delight in this small town venue.

Yelp
Had an interactive kids section that my boys enjoyed playing in. Thursdays is free admission for all sections and we really enjoyed that. They had scavenger hunts for the main gallery for kids to do. We enjoyed walking around and seeing the outdoor sculptures as well.
