A Trip to Catalonian Wine Region - AFAR

"The oldest winery in Priorat, rooted in a history of Carthusian monks who planted vines on steep, slate-based slopes up to 2,400 feet. It produces acclaimed reds; the Cartoixa blend of garnacha and cariñena is noted for ripe tannins and intense, toasted black-fruit character." - Kristin Braswell

The visit to Scala Dei was long anticipated and did not disappoint! How lucky we were to have that appointment and our host so generous. These are wines at the top of the Priorat, some made it back home in the luggage, need a little rest! Well worth the detour

We had a great tour & wine tasting here in late January with Natalie. We were the only two people, so were able to ask questions and come away with a good understanding of the history, geology and enology of the Priorat and of Scala Dei. The spaces themselves were interesting, including a massive cellar still bearing the burn marks from a Civil War ammunition explosion. The tasting was equally enlightening, and we would highly recommend the experience to others. Natalie was one of the best and most approachable guides we’ve ever had.

Excellent tour with Diego who tailored the content to our needs (focusing on the specifics of the wine and region). We tasted the full gamot of wines on offer - the Sant Antoni is an excellent pure expression of the local Grenache Vs the typical style of Priorat blend and is a must for anyone visiting the region.

Great spot to learn about the history, geography and different varietals in Priorat. Delicious wines and super friendly employees. Definitely book a tasting if you are coming to Priorat.

The winery itself was good, however I would highly suggest that you do not ship wine back to the States. It was a nightmare experience between the winery messing up and not forwarding the correct email address to the wine shipper for payment and processing. The winery was a bit rude to me at first through emails and then corrected themselves when they realized they made the error. The third party wine shipper never updated me that they didn’t ship wine in August due to the heat and then they handed off the wine to UPS in the states after they finally shipped it. I would not be home to sign for it so I had UPS change it to their UPS location for pickup and paid for the change. Unfortunately they could not process this and kept delivering to my house and the wine almost got sent back to Spain. I suggest buying some bottles there and bring them home with you.

Great experience, almost 2 hours travel to meet this lovely place. We walked around it, had the opportunity to learn a bit about this place full of story and afterwards we tasted 4 amazing wines.

The scenic on the way there is beautiful! As soon as you get there you feel the warmth and welcoming vibe of the staff. We enjoyed the passion they shared with the wine and it’s history. Very knowledgeable of the roots of the winery and their process. We recommend and will come back soon.

Very nice winetour in the heart of Priorat! Private tour with Paul; he understands the guide roll well! Paul let us taste almost all the wines. Again we learned a lot about the Priorat wines. Thanks for the nice visit 🤩
