14 Things to Do (and 1 Not to Do) in Medellin (Updated 2025)

"Built in 1842, this small cemetery-museum features large marble mausoleums and statues where you can learn about many famous Colombians and their contributions, and it's worth checking for special events like midnight tours and movie nights; it's also conveniently close to the botanical gardens and is open daily 8am–5pm with free admission." - Matthew Kepnes

It's worth a visit if you enjoy visiting historic cemeteries as there are many interesting tombs and sculptures to see. There are a few notable Colombians buried here but you will miss them unless you have a guide or a Paisa friend to explain the history to you as there are no explanatory plaques. The rich of Medellin used to bury their loved ones here back when Centro had grand estates and before it was abandoned for El Poblado. I was impressed with the amount of old marble art work which had to be imported from Europe and then carried by mules overland in the Andes. This is still a functioning cemetery so remember to be respectful of the people grieving. Also, note that the area around the cemetery is not really the safest so avoid walking the streets around.

This is an excellent place to learn about the funerary customs and traditions of Colombia - while respecting the privacy and dignity of grieving families because this is an active cemetery. Signage is in Spanish and English. Some of Antioquia’s most prominent figures are buried here and we learned a lot about the history of the region by goggling names as we walked around. Access to the cemetery is easy by Metro - there is a station very close by.

It's a cemetery. As it's located inside a barrio, it's perfunctory (some vegetation but not park-like). Most are individual mausoleums, stacked maybe 10 high & within the 2 level, circular structure that defines the largest space. Within the circle are family & individual tombs including at least 1 prior Colombian President.

The only entrance to this place is on Carrera 51 across from the park. Do not stray on to the other nearby streets. The map marker is not correct and Google would not approve the change. Good to combine this with a visit to the Botanical Garden. Compared to other cemeteries in Latin America, this one is average, but attractive. Take Metro to station Universidad.
