"A Storm Rolling in at San Juan Cemetery San Juan Cemetery lies on the coast adjacent to El Morro (San Juan's beloved fort) and nestled in the district La Perla, a rougher part of town. Its statues and tombs make it as beautiful as a New Orleans cemetery. Exiting El Morro, head down the grassy field to your left to catch this flustering overhead view. On this day, a powerful storm was rolling in, casting everything in gray. By Stacey Bowers"

This place is absolutely unique and super beautiful at the same time! It’s an old cemetery that was built way back in 1863, and overlooks the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean. You can get there by taking Calle Cementerio, a narrow road leading directly to the entrance. It’s tucked between El Morro fortress to the west and the La Perla neighborhood to the east. There is some street parking. I’ll always cherish my time spent there! 🇵🇷🌊🌴🫶🏼🥰

Cementerio Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis is a super interesting place. Nestled by the ocean in Old San Juan, this historic cemetery offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. The combination of the beautiful tombstones, the sound of the waves, and the rich history make it a unique and peaceful spot to visit. When you visit the forts do take the time to walk through here. It was not as crowded as the fields just outside of the fort.

We visited the Cemetery here and it was both stunning and peaceful. It’s quite amazing how many graves there were but they still made every gravestone look like a piece of unique art. So many statues and religious symbols decorated the graves.

This is a gorgeous graveyard. It should be visited to pay respects to so many important Puerto Ricans like Pedro Albizu, but without any historical knowledge it is worth the visit in its own right.

Wow, what a remarkable cemetery! Lots of history in this cemetery, lined with family plots and cathedral. To get here you go under the road at the San Juan nation site of the Castillo San Felipe del Morro structure. Walking through this cemetery gave me a sense of respect on how Spaniards treat their dead. So much admiration.

Huge and beautiful cemetery. The mausoleum in the middle is breathtaking. The grounds surrounding it are meticulously maintained and a clear respect is given to the cemetery itself. Wonderful site to see with the crystal blue ocean as a back drop.

Amazing cemetery. It’s like a white graveyard built against the ocean. It is a mandatory visit if you’re checking out the forts nearby or doing a walk in tour in la Perle. The white marble tops and stones look amazing with the ocean behind it. Simply breathtaking

Google
Definitely one of the most beautiful cemeteries I’ve had the privilege of visiting. Stretching back over 150 years, some of the gravesites have stalled into disrepair or vandalized, but those are rare, in my opinion. The care given to the memory of loved ones has left this with many interesting and beautiful statues to keep the remains company. And let’s not forget the dragon guardians, too. Just be aware of their presence and they’re less likely to send you to your eternal rest as I nearly did, or at least almost left with soiled pants.

Yelp
Located along the Atlantic Ocean just outside the walls of Fort San Felipe del Morro fortress, Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery is worth a stop. This beautiful, historic colonial-era cemetery located along the water is a very peaceful final resting place for many of Puerto Rico's most prominent citizens. Construction began in 1863. It was named to honor Saint Maria Magdalena de Pazzi. The prominent location along the Atlantic Ocean was due to the colonial Spanish Puerto Rican government's views on life and death. Death was seen as an unknown, a mystery, which created fear and anxiety. The cemetery was constructed as a bridge that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean to help the deceased spirit's journey to bridge, or cross over, to the afterlife. To visit the cemetery, drive through a short tunnel on Calle Tiburcio Reyes or enjoy the views as you walk along the grass fields at the enclosing walls. Take care as the surrounding La Perla district is not the safest in Old San Juan. We just enjoyed the views from the tops of the walls.

Yelp
I love to visit historic cemeteries because you learn so much. Also, the way headstones and grave markers change over time is also interesting to me. This is a very peaceful and beautiful cemetery right on the water. We were in San Juan for the day via a cruise and this was the place I wanted to go. It is just a couple bucks uber ride from the cruise port well worth the money because it is hilly and also we probably would have had a hard time finding it on our own. My husband and I walked around looking on our own and then we came across an old man who worked for the city and worked there. He spoke enough English to give us a little tour. Super nice. He also told us that a lot of people come there at night and vandalize the place or leave trash, which is sad. I would say if you are into history or genealogy, it is worth the trip (it is basically free so it is worth the trip anyway!)

Yelp
#54 for 2018 Beautifully located alongside El Morro, it is visited by many tourist because of the breathtaking statues throughout the cemetary. Being next to the beach is too hard to pass up. We decided to visit before going into El Morro. The gorgeous statues makes you forget you are in a cemetery. You shouldn't though. As you walk through, you must remain respectful. There are new graves and very old graves of some of the prominent people of Puerto Rico. Constructed in 1863, the Spanish Government at the time wanted to kind of help with the journey of the decease and those still leaving. By building overlooking the Atlantic ocean, it symbolized the journey that must be taken to go over the other side. There is only one way in and it's the same way out whether you are walking or driving. The entrance makes sharp turn going underneath and through to the front of the cemetery. This is the dangerous area. If you are walking, you need to be cautious of the cars going by. If you are driving, go slow. Get an early start to your day. Visit this place before you go to El Morro. It will not take long to walk around to see some of the beauty here in this final resting place of peace.. .

Yelp
when I came here the gates were locked, the walls are very low so I was able to admire how amazingly beautiful this final resting place is. it is located right next to el Morro and the view to the sea is pretty stunning. the dumb stones are white and beautiful, right next to it there is so much life and beauty, this is truly an amazing resting place.

Yelp
This cemetery is stunning! Worth walking down to. You can't see the other half of it from above because it's behind the yellow gateway. The statues are very intricate and are should be looked at up close! There are many different crypts and you can walk around on the grass!

Yelp
As far as cemetaries are concerned, this one is amazing. By far the the most amazing cemetary I have ever come across. If you happen to be in Old San Juan do not miss the chance to go for a stroll through here and check out the beautiful statues/gravesites (and the occasional iguana).

Yelp
I've been buried here since 1929. Overall it's been an okay resting place, but I have some things to note. In the morning there is absolutely no shade, so hot in my tomb!! The wind is at times relentless, can even get chilly for me some nights if my lid isn't closed up tight! Lots of people come by and talk about silly things, it's quite lovely eavesdropping really. I hear the view is great and it's a nice place, come say hi if your in the area!

Yelp
If you dig cemeteries, def check this place out. Ignore anything online that says to avoid it due to it's proximity to La Perla. The cemetary is completely safe - during the day. An exquisite final resting place. Absolutely stunning.

Yelp
We were not able to go right into the cemetery as the gates were locked. Luckily there are many vantage points on the walls surrounding the cemetery. This is prime location, located right on the oceans edge. You can easily find it near Castillo San Felipe del Morro. If you walk from here, so you can look/stand/sit on the walls surrounding the cemetery for some amazing views of the graves and mausoleums dedicated to Puerto Rico's dead. It's well worth spending 10 minutes or so. You can get some beautiful photos and videos, If you want to see my video on this location, check out my YouTube page at Josh the Travel Guy. Just look for the following video " Don't forget to hit the thumbs up and let me know you liked the review!

Yelp
What a stunning cemetery holding so much history. It's really upsetting that the gates were closed and I was unable to enter. One of my main reasons for going there was to pay respects to Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos...a great man! So I was upset that I was unable to enter. Also some people don't care because you can see a can of beer here and there and it's really sad to see such a beautiful, peaceful area disrespected in that manner. Either way you can see the final resting place of many from outside the low walls and I found myself just starring at the location for at least 15 minutes. Also looking at some of the tombs with 1890 date of birth is just amazing. This place is full of history I really wish they had individuals assigned to the cemetery where they allowed those to enter and just enjoy the beauty of this cemetery.

Yelp
I want to be buried here. It's a stunning location worthy of a 5 star luxury hotel. The deal back in the day was that cemeteries had to exist outside the city walls so one was started in between the forts of El Morro and San Cristobal del Castillo facing the Atlantic Ocean. There are about 1000 gravesites here and it's so peaceful and beautiful. The walls of the forts overlook this area so grab a picnic lunch and come and eat with the dead and enjoy the sounds and sights of the crashing waves.

Yelp
I've never seen such incredible stonework as in this cemetery. The beautiful views and the serenity of being near the ocean is peaceful and beautiful

Yelp
Beautiful setting and beautiful statuary. I am one of those folks who love the serenity of cemeteries and appreciate the history contained within. Located between the two forts and next to a neighbor with a bad reputation. You should be safe among the dead....
