On the Grid : Cementiri de Montjuïc

"An enormous and unique cemetery, located on the slopes of Montjuïc with views overlooking both the Mediterranean Sea and the city. The cemetery is characterised by its steep paths and artwork strewn between the tombs. Famous artists from many different eras, including Joan Miró, are resting in this necropolis or have left their footprints here. It’s worth taking one of the guided tours on offer: one ‘historical’ tour which takes you round the tombs of important figures in Catalan history; another ‘artistic’ tour will point out the various works and periods that are featured throughout the space. Tours are conducted on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month, at 11am. It’s a free activity and there’s no need to book in advance." - ZeClé

No need to buy tickets at all—it’s free to enter. I arrived via bus around 1:30pm on a sunny weekday afternoon. I wanted to check out the beautiful art nouveau graves. Another thing that’d appealed to me was getting away from the bustling crowds… and just as I’d hoped, there was no one there. I saw 3 people during my 2ish hour visit. I was thankful for the peace at first, but when a sneaking disquiet started to set in, I understood what a previous reviewer had meant when she’d suggested not going alone. Definitely worth it to read about the history of the place. In addition to being the final resting place of various famous figures, the cemetery had also been the site of mass unmarked graves during the years of Franco. I recommend a visit. It was beautiful and sobering and gave me a deeper understanding of and respect for Barcelona’s history.

Fascinating place with a unique atmosphere. The cemetery is located on the slopes of Montjuïc, offering beautiful views over the city and the sea. It's filled with ornate mausoleums and statues, making it a place of both historical and architectural interest. A quiet and reflective spot away from the city's hustle and bustle.

Google
Knowledgeable and interesting guide provided a walking tour through the cemetery with an amazing view of the city from Montjuic. I highly recommend it for its history and scenery!!

Actually a very interesting place. I have not seen a cemetery like this before. It is mostly big walls with kind of crypts of 6 levels. There are roads for cars and even a bus stop in the cemetery. There is also a great view into the harbour.

great cemetery, lots to walk and pretty cool views. Especially at golden hour. the signaled routes I found a bit confusing and couldn't access the "guided" map online.

It was the Wine Festival in Villanova I Getru on the La Rambla main walking street of this incredible lively and beautiful seaside city! It's about 25 minutes from Barcelona and 5 minutes from Sitges, the Art and bohemian city of Spain. The Wine Festival is called Temps de Vi, was spectacular 3 days with countless of wine cellars represented from Catalonia, absolutely Superior quality vinos and sparkling vinos! Artisan food stands provided special food from their cheese , meat and pastry, besides all restaurants on La Rambla were open for service! Beautiful sea playa with a special statue of Mother Cow, representing that the life of cows/bulls are respected here in Catalonia, no bullfighting or other use of bulls, it's been banned long years ago! Spectacular city with lively expat groups, super social network life as well! 🥰

My first impression was wowwwww, just WOW! I have visited many cemeteries but this one ist just incredible. It’s really big area but the most beautiful ones are luckily not too far from the entrance. They really put sooo much effort to create the fantastic art works. A small tip: the taxi app can be very useful. We planned to take a bus back to town but we missed it, the next one would be in 40 minutes. It was cold and windy and there’s nothing near so the taxi app just saved our lives. 😅

Unique and big cemetery, we walked there it took us an hour to get from our area (Gothic quarter). If you’re into cemetery tourism then this is the place for you to visit.

To get here was interesting. What I did was take the subway to the tram up to the castle and then walked down to it. Way easier then trying to walk up it! I'll have to remember to add my photos. Btw.. The entrance is occupied by prostitutes.. . Great venue for funeral art.
