Essential Guide to Visiting Tulum, Mexico

"A less-crowded alternative to the region's most visited cenotes, prized for crystal-clear waters and dramatic stalactites and stalagmites set within relatively untouched jungle, offering a more tranquil experience for swimmers and snorkelers seeking solitude." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Amazingly experience. Two great Cenote caves, nice facilities, friendly staff, not busy (on a monday), with monkeys hanging out in the trees. The road is fine for most cars too.

What an incredible experience! It was my first time swimming in a cave, so I really didn't know what to expect. But the place is so beautiful and unique! You definitely need a guide who knows the place to enter the cave. They offer safe vests and I really felt safe during the whole time. There's also a good support structure, with restrooms and a small restaurant.

A hidden gem right here. Came early and had the entire place and experience to myself before the busses of tourists come around 11. You are pretty much in your own here, no guide, no time limit. Which is great. The caves are phenomenal and peaceful. The cenotes are clear and majestic. At $400pesos, it can't be beat.

We came early in the morning so we were swimming there alone, it was an amazing experience. And don´t miss the nearby cave, it is also worth seeing. Just be careful about the signs to the cenote, the access road is not marked and you have to drive for about 3km on gravel road to find the first sign.

Really beautiful and inviting when well lit but if the lights aren’t turned on it’s super dark and not very welcoming! Would recommend getting a tour so you can explore past the main body into the tighter bat caverns.

Incredible caverns. If you're in this part of the country, you have to visit at least one cenote, and this is a good one. Had a fantastic tour guide that took us swimming in the caves as well. Highly recommend. Hands down, this was one of the best highlights of the trip.

Great experience, but do NOT recommend buying a "tour" for this. 4 hours stuck in the bus driving, picking up all other guests from other resorts. Swam around in less than 30min. The review for my experience with Ruma Maya tours is negative, but the senotes themselves are beautiful and majestic. New decking was installed in a lot of places, very stable and with non-skid plates to prevent slipping. Food is terrible, gift shop owner is stuck up and not friendly, all they did was count money from the sale of their overpriced coconuts.

We spent the most wonderful day at Caracol. When we arrived, we were greeted by the friendly host who explained the experience: cave walk and two Cenotes. He also had me move our car to a more shaded area, which we appreciated. They also pointed out a couple of howler monkeys resting in the trees above. We started with the nature and cave walk which was very cool, and colored lighting helps to see details throughout the cave areas. Then we enjoyed both Cenotes. They gave us a waterproof flashlight to use in the Cenotes, which is necessary to explore into the cave areas. While i thought it might feel claustrophobic going into the cave areas with low hanging stalactites, it wasn’t an issue— and our kids enjoyed it too. I’d definitely recommend both Cenotes since they are both unique. And there were no crowds, so we were able to really enjoy the experience as a family. After the Cenotes we enjoyed cervezas and kids had fresh coconut water (once the water was gone they opened them up and sliced out the flesh to enjoy). And don’t miss the local Mayan art at the store. Overall the service and experience was 10/10, highly recommend Caracol to get a true natural cenote experience!
