Central Café and Restaurant 1887 – Budapest, Hungary - Gastro Obscura

"If you are a literature lover with a penchant for the historical (and the Hungarian), Budapest’s Central Café and Restaurant 1887 is for you. Much like the cobblestoned streets of the city outside, the elongated dining hall feels is frozen in time, specifically, a time of ornate moldings framing a 40-foot ceiling, white table cloths, and flashy marble columns. Large windows highlight the fact that it was the place to see but, more importantly, be seen in late 19th-century Budapest. Sandwiched with a library on one side and a printing press on the other, it became the perfect spot for the intellectual elite to kill time and engage in esoteric debates while waiting for their works to be pressed and printed. From its opening in 1887 to 1944, the café attracted a who’s who of Hungarian poets, artists, scientists, and authors. The café shuttered in late 1944 when Soviet and Romanian forces laid siege to Budapest. At the war’s end, the building required much reconstruction. Repairs sought to restore the café to its original glory, demanding a brick-by-brick rebuilding of the entire interior based on old photographs. The original furniture was salvaged and displayed in the café, including the chandeliers, grand piano, and marble-countertop bar. Black-and-white photographs of Hungarian luminaries cover the walls, including writers and philosophers who sat for hours in the café, composing some of the country’s most influential works and theories. Legend has it that Frigyes Karinthy devised the theory of “six degrees of separation” and that Gyula Krúdy wrote his Sindbad tales inside. Don’t mind the portraits of famous Hungarian intellectuals looking down as you sip coffee and indulge in a menu of Hungarian classics, from goulash to red wine beef cheeks to chicken paprikash stew. However, Central Café is not satisfied with simply sitting on its laurels. The café actively pushes modern visitors to channel their creative minds to engage and be engaged. The bars are stocked with new and old newspapers. The waiters have interactive roles, encouraged by management to spend as long as possible conversing with customers. On each place setting is a card that reads “Be a Poet!” along with a titbit about a famous writer who likely sat in that very seat at one point. There’s also a wooden pencil for your use, daring customers to create something of their own. Update as of February 2022: The cafe is closed indefinitely. Update as of June 2022: The cafe is open again. None" - rbenn250, rozsosreka, Joecy Zhang, Carole Rosenblat, GRH, nicolab

Elegance. Imagination. Scintillating flavors. These are a few words to describe an enchanting experience for the senses. Traditional Hungarian dishes, elaborate cocktails, beautiful music and impeccable service are hallmarks of this restaurant. Every dish was impactful leaving a lasting impression on the tongue and the senses. Our waiter was a paragon of humility and care. The ambience of the location was a soul easing delight. The pictures of these dishes will never be able to convey the elaborate flavor profiles on display in each bite. If you're in Budapest, you MUST eat here at least once and have a one of a kind evening that will linger in your heart for years to come.

Love that very beautiful Grand cafe. Very well managed, excellent service, delicious food, beautiful decor. Even the bathroom area is very beautiful. We went there 3 time, excellent breakfast with musicians who played from 10am. Indoor is so georgous and the outdoor terrace is so nice to sit at. I prefer this Cafe than some of most historical cafes recommended in Vienna, so bravo Budapest 👏. When in Budapest you must visit.

An excellent café in the city center, it looks like a movie here, there is a very good atmosphere. It is also possible to sit outside. Inside was playing lively stylish music. The service beaten and politely. They explained everything to us and the food and drink was excellent. We recommend people looking for something non -standard. Cleanliness around and nice atmosphere was here.

Excelent food, we had the strogonof, the burgundi meat, and the crepes, they were all amazing, really tasty and well executed. Mark was super nice and attentive, great service. 100% recommend.

Very beautiful place, with live music. It gives the feels of the Grand Budapest hotel film :) I ate goulash soup and a slice of Dobos cake for dessert, both delicious. Maître d'hôtel Laci was the sweetest I ever met. So was the musician who played cello, his play was joyous. Highly recommend the place.

We seated outside on a perfect fall day, moderate crowd, but we were seated immediately. Márk and Janus our servers were very accommodating. The steak Benedict was very good. And my wife's cappuccino was outstanding.

I had a fantastic experience at Central Grand Cafe & Bar during my visit to Hungary. From the moment I arrived, the service was warm and attentive, especially thanks to my server, Miki, who truly made the experience memorable. I ordered the shakshuka, which was absolutely delicious—rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The sourdough bread that came with it was wonderfully soft on the inside, making it a perfect pairing. I also tried a cappuccino, which was smooth and well-balanced. But the highlight was the Crème Brûlée Cappuccino—a unique recommendation from Miki that exceeded all expectations. It had the perfect blend of sweetness and richness, unlike anything I’ve tried before. To top it all off, Miki surprised me with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine, a thoughtful and generous gesture that really elevated the experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Budapest—great food, amazing coffee, and service that genuinely makes you feel welcome.

My second time in Budapest and I tried this Restaursnt for the first time. The ambiente is beautiful with live piano music, and the lights are amazing. The food was very tasty and looked very good. The only problem was the service. They came a few times, and were not attentive. At least we wanted to pay (5 persons - so you have to split into 5) the service unfortunately splittet into 6 and we had to pay this way. They also were not very friendly after paying.
