Sweet Little Ducklings Intentionally Killed by Playa Vista Central Park Management!
If you visited the Playa Vista Central Park recently, you might have noticed a beautiful group of 10 ducklings, born early April. They have been enjoyed and fed by many park-goers, adults and kids alike, me being surely one of their most enthusiastic fans. Unfortunately, I have bad news that I feel the need to share with you. 9 of the 10 ducklings have been intentionally killed by the park management. What they did is wrong and cruel and needs to be denounced! It should not happen again!
Here is the story:
On my most recent visit to the park last Thursday, I was walking around searching for the group of ducklings when I spotted the couple of ducks followed by just one of them. I walked around the park to see whether the rest of the ducklings had been left somewhere else, but I couldn't find any. As I was watching the only duckling present, a young lady came by the pond and we started a conversation. It turned out Maddy lives nearby, comes to the park frequently and was also wondering where the rest of the ducklings were. We decided to ask a security person who was walking towards us. He appeared a bit hesitant and asked me if I wanted "the real story", implying that what I was about to hear was going to be disturbing. When I replied that I wanted the real story, he told us that "his boss", whom I assume is the park manager, brought a pest control guy who owns a falcon to take care of the ducklings. He unleashed the falcon, which attacked all of them, with only one of them managing to survive. The security person was kind enough to spare us more specific details. When we asked why they did it, the security person listed the following excuses on behalf of his boss:
-There are too many ducks in this park, they need to control the population
- The park cannot feed all of those ducks, even if people regularly come to the park and feed them
- In nature, they wouldn't all survive anyway
- In nature, the ducklings would be attacked by predators
We pointed out that there is the Ballona Creek just next door, which hosts many kinds of birds, including ducks. In fact, many ducks constantly fly between the park and the creek and they are used to having to fend for themselves and find their own food. If they thought there are too many ducks in their park, they could have had them released into the creek. Or they could have just let them live and grow in peace and let people enjoy their uplifting presence. This story shocked me, I was crying and I am glad Maddy was there to talk with me for a while. I was in such a state, I could barely drive back home.
