"Academic and Cultural Center The restoration of the first Dominican convent in Oaxaca was completed in 2011, when it opened as the San Pablo Academic and Cultural Center. The building dates back to 1529, but over time it served as homes, shops and a hotel. The restoration project took six years to complete, and has incorporated sustainable elements such as a rainwater catchment system and solar panels. The cultural center has a few different areas, including a reading room for kids, a few different exhibit areas, classrooms, a restaurant and cafe. The main mission of this center is to promote Oaxaca's indigenous languages and culture. Besides hosting a variety of exhibits, courses and workshops throughout the year, San Pablo hosts some special events such as the Posada del Cacao in December, and the festival of the 7 moles in July. The site also serve as headquarters of the Alfredo Harp Helú Oaxaca foundation, which sponsored the building's restoration."
This place is fantastic.
In addition to the interesting architecture and art exhibits - the courtyard is simply one of the nicest places to hang out in the city. Definitely worth checking out at the very least, but if you're looking for somewhere (free!) to spend a lazy afternoon, this is the spot.

Beautiful space with some cool art! You can read a bit about the convent and building history inside. There's a coffee shop and lovely courtyard.

I had gotten r*bbed earlier in the day and was looking for something to do away from the crowds where I could take a few moments to mentallly regroup and this cultural center provided the perfect respite. It has such a stunningly beautiful courtyard and they currently have an exhibit dedicated to birds, with each ceramic sculpture more intricate and awe-inspiring than the next. It's free to get in, so no need to purchase tickets in advance.

Such a beautiful courtyard and mini-museum to wander through. At the very least you should walk through the courtyard. Calm space with nice art. The building has been restored and has a library inside. Some of the areas were off limits due to covid (the library also doesn't seem to be open to the public) but still a really nice spot to explore. Check out Cafe Muss next door too.

One of my favorite outdoor places in Oaxaca. It offers shade, free open wifi and great coffee. And above all, it’s a place to relax and enjoy the silence.

I really liked this place. Good vibe inside and outside in the park-like area. There's a small library inside that looked a bit like a coworking place. Free entrance. I only stayed for a short time, but really liked it!

Great added piece of architecture. Does not disrupt the historic structure and adds separation. There are galleries and expositions held here of great quality. It's a nice place to explore nooks and cranies. The securitt is very friendly and don't mind questions.

A very nice surprise to find a quaint quiet little library inside this cultural center. Highly recommended if you need a quiet place for studying or reading. A coffee shop is close by as well

Yelp
What an amazingly gorgeous space and oasis of calm in the center of Oaxaca City! It has a library, cafe, gift shop, and event space providing free events. Their outdoor space is a wonderful place to hang out. I'll be there again next time I'm in town!!!

Yelp
Our hotel in Oaxaca was really close to Centro Cultural San Pablo, so we walked through the alley it encompasses a few times. It's a gorgeous little alley and collection of buildings, but I left still a little confused about what it is! We wandered into the "museum" part, but they were hosting a conference and we weren't able to see or find much to take look at. It's a nice place to take a stroll/through around, but it wasn't anything that I'd say someone can't miss if you're in Oaxaca for the first time.

Yelp
I came across this wonderful hidden space during the free walking tour. We returned on our last day in Oaxaca and found it by the unique iron gate at the font. We enjoyed handing out in the cafe and wandering the grounds. They were preparing for an event but we were still able to see the upstairs area where a few classes were going on and we even browsed the library. Note that there are exhibits downstairs in a small corner area where we saw some additional info on textiles.
Everyone here was very welcoming and assisted us with any questions. You can quietly hang out all day and I don't think you'd get kicked out (well of course unless they have an event booked). There were lots of guests sitting around reading a book in the courtyard or working in the library.
Best to the Alfredo Harp Helu foundation which continues to inspire and educate. Our stop here was the most peaceful part of our trip!
