3 Best Day Trips in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"At 4,400 feet, Cerro de Punta is the tallest mountain in Puerto Rico; on a clear day, you can see the entirety of the island from the top. Adventurers can choose to drive or hike, but after Hurricane Maria, it's more advised to hike, as the driving terrain can be treacherous. Hiking paths are pretty clear, but folks with mobility issues should sit this one out. And only go during daylight." - Alicia Kennedy

Cerro de Punta – Mountain Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Tell us a bit about what we can expect from this place. At 4,400 feet, Cerro de Punta is the tallest mountain in Puerto Rico; on a clear day, you can see the entirety of the island from the top. Adventurers can choose to drive or hike, but after Hurricane Maria, it's more advised to hike, as the driving terrain can be treacherous. And only go during daylight. What are some of the highlights of the visit? The view from the top is the goal—and the reward. If it's a clear day, you can see from one sparkling coast to the other. How easy is it to get around? Hiking paths are pretty clear, but folks with mobility issues should sit this one out. So why would you recommend this, and who for? Given the views, it's no surprises that is one of the major sights on the island. But if you're not into outdoorsy stuff, skip it." - Alicia Kennedy

Fantastic views although somewhat cloudy. Even in a modified jeep, we had to get out and hike the last 1km or so.

One of the best hikes I’ve done in a while. There is a rugged parking lot at the base of the peak. The hike is about 0.8 miles one way. The trail has a high elevation gain and it is steep. The views are breathtaking and it is definitely worth the drive and the hike. One advise, make sure to know your way back home and do not trust Google Maps. I got stuck in dead end remote streets at night.

It’s approximately a 2 mile walk from the trailhead to the top and back. The view is beautiful and to me worth the steep walk. If you have a 4x4 car you might be able to take the car to the top but make sure you have good tires, there are some big holes and rocks on the way up. The road is in very bad conditions.

Amazing experience. Definitely make sure to check the weather before going. Be ready to traverse a very steep hike to the top, the hike is completely worth it

The view .. is worth the scary challenging road.. and although we traveled to this beautiful sise of the Island in a cloudy overcast day the weather was so cool up Jayuya town we enjoyed most of the ride with our windows down to smell and feel the cool breeze. As you head up the concrete road, when you can find the road!! .. The worst part of it is at the beginning, passing the big tree; I guess because of all the rain current coming from up the amazing mountain view; some spots just have rocks instead of concrete…But as you pass the tough rocking hill then you will drive in a 1 lane smaller smooth concrete path. You will need for sure a 4 x 4.. some parts of road are washed off. But Again.. if you get to make it… what a view of the Island .. North side South side all around it. We spotted some people walking to the peak if you prefer to still see this hidden spot. The end of the road has a fair spot to reverse and back up to return. You will find also at the end of this rd Liberty cel tower antennas and other 3 more ; so don’t be fooled by thinking is not the correct path.. you will find the not maintain steps up to this highest beauty view. So sad is not well maintain. I guess they prefer tourist since is a place for technology. But again the breathtaking views when you climb the stairway and pics said it all.

The road up is really bad. It's gotten much worse in the year of 2023. If you don't have 4 wheel drive you won't make it. The hike up the road isn't too bad, but it is steep. The view from the top is cool, though you are surrounded by giant antennas. I have done much tougher hikes for worse views, this one is definitely worth it!

An exhilarating hike up Cerro de Punta! Be prepared for a steep ascent, with 170 meters of elevation gain over 1.5 kilometers. Cars can't reach the summit due to road conditions, but the panoramic 360-degree views up top are truly breathtaking. During our visit, we were greeted by two friendly dogs at the summit, despite their initial intimidating appearance. A challenging yet rewarding experience for nature enthusiasts, offering stunning vistas and unexpected companionship along the way.

The best views on the entire island - on a clear day you can see both the south and the north coasts. I would say to come here rather than the over crowded El Yunque which is not as high or dramatic. Use caution as the steel bar balustrade at the top has some gaps and mosquito repellent is a must. To ascend the rugged track up to the top you will need a proper 4x4 with at least a V6 engine (we used a Jeep Wrangler with no problems) as normal cars would get stuck or seriously damaged - alternatively you could park on the strip of land by the well paved main road and walk up (estimate this would take 45 min to an hour as it is extremely steep). The main purpose of the track is to access the telecom equipment but there is no sign saying you can’t just drive up for the views! When we came here there was not another person in sight so it was very peaceful. There is no visitor centre or even a local restaurant nearby so bring snacks and drinks.
