SwaSwara, Gokarna, Karnataka - Explore & Book

"Taking its name from the local word for ‘inner voice’, this all inclusive beach retreat is a place to find yourself. Set in acres of coconut groves and paddy fields, the retreat’s daily programmes include various yoga and meditation sessions, so you can pick and choose what suits you. There are 2 levels - gentle and progressive - plus private tuition if you feel you need more. Alternatively you can spend lazy days on the beach, swimming laps in the pool and bird-watching in the forest.SwaSwara - actually in Karnataka, but listed in our Goa section because most visitors tie it in with Goa - is a short walk from the famed beaches of Gokarna. The nearest is Om beach, so-called because it's shaped like the mystical symbol for the sound of the universe. If this all sounds a bit hippy dippy, well, it probably isn’t the place for you. There are elements that are more left-field; daily ayurvedic therapy sessions, ranging from hot oil massages to herbal pummelling, panchakarma treatements are prescribed after a visit to the resort’s qualified doctors. But visitors tend to love it and come time and again to experience its calm tranquillity and life-affirming properties. There's fantastic fresh food, 24 comfortable suites, great service and green credentials, including a biomass burner and rainwater harvesting. Highs The staff are attentive, friendly and happy to help or stop for a chatThe villas are spacious, private and luxurious - a far cry from an ashram dormitoryYou can have a personally tailored yoga programme plus private yoga sessions through the day for no extra cost (quantity of sessions is dependent on the duration of your stay)Great for solo travellers (although there is a supplement)The place to come for a life-changing, spiritual experience à la Eat, Pray Love Lows The minimum stay is 5 nights; Ayurvedic programmes require at least 7 nightsIt’s 3 hours and 30 minutes from the nearest airportThe site is alcohol free (apart from a small range of local Indian wines), but there are other bars and restaurants close by Limited food options if you don’t like Indian food, vegetarian meals or seafoodNo children under 15 allowed - the atmosphere is focused on serenity and calmness" - Heidi Fuller-Love

An abode in tranquility spread over acres of lush green dense landscape, adjoining the famous OM beach. The cottages have a distinctive design layout having open to sky area between the bedroom and the relaxing plaza/ study, even the shower area is partially peeping at the sky. The sleep quality is excellent. Though dedicated to wellness and related treatments as primary objective, ours was a short relaxing stay sans wellness though we did undergo a naturopathy rejuvenation process of about 100 minutes which definitely lived upto its name. We walked within the premises amongst the greens and drizzle. The choice of cuisines at the restaurant is well spread out and the making of the food focuses on healthy preparation practices like sans oil , fats etc. The general Manager Mr Devdutta was courteous enough to spend sometime with us and explain the local culture and salient features of SwaSwara. The staff at the front desk was prompt in attending to all our requests, whereas the young servers at the restaurant, the boys as well as the girls were polite and swift. All in all an excellent place to be at for total peace and rejuvenation.

My husband and I spent a week at SwaSwara, and even though I fell quite ill during our stay, it was still one of the most special and healing experiences we’ve had. The staff were incredible — from the front desk to the kitchen, waiters, and especially the Ayurvedic doctors and therapists. They took such great care of me while I was unwell, checking in often and ensuring I was comfortable. The days I was well enough to join the yoga and meditation sessions were powerful — exactly the grounding, spiritual experience I was hoping for. And the Ayurvedic treatments were on another level — truly the best massages I’ve ever had, with techniques that felt both therapeutic and deeply relaxing. The food was also amazing, and they fully accommodated my vegan diet with delicious, nourishing meals. Even though I didn’t get to experience everything, I left feeling cared for and deeply grateful. I hope to return one day in full health to enjoy all that SwaSwara has to offer.

Staggeringly impressive. Nothing quite prepares you for the quiet earthy luxury of this place. The architecture is unexpected, especially the concept of almost half the bath space being open to Nature - trees, rains, wind et al, yet you don't get wet if you don't want to. Breakfast and one meal is included in the plan so it is pure unadulterated relaxation with no need to think too deeply about choices. The large swimming pool was right outside our suite, and the marvelous meditation hall just a few metres further. Chinnappa, well trained in pranayama, brought in every morning to its vibrant potential. Staff was loving and kind and fun. Swaswara has adopted 2 strays 2 yrs back from the beach, who have become the resort's permanent mascots. Well taken care of, soft and endearing, Kaju and Kurry either leave you alone (recognising those of the human species who prefer to stay away from dogs) or become your delightful tails (us). So much space to walk around, go down to the private beach (security at beach gate keeping an eagle eye out for you), walk around the private lake, while kingfishers and Coucals fly around you.

My wife and I spent 3 nights at SwaSwara in mid-Nov and had a great stay. Check-in process was smooth and the lady checking us in (forget her name) explained all the amenities and the overall 'lay of the land'. Jayashree (property manager) was very kind and offered to give us a tour of the town. Food was a highlight of the stay - really good and flavorful. Sivakumar and Chandrashekhar was our servers for most meals were very attentive and always available. Cooking classes/demonstration held by chef Sivakumar were excellent and we learned a few dishes, Chef Sivakumar also gave us the printed recipes. He also went above and beyond during each meal and checked in with us to make sure the food was ok. Yoga and meditation classes held by Chandan and Amruta were very good. While we were there SwaSwara inaugurated a Naturopathy center, and we got a consultation with the Naturopathy doctor, Dr. Shweta, which was really good. The one downside was the Ayurveda consultation - we spent about 45 minutes with a lady (the Ayurveda doctor), who diligently took notes, and nothing seemed to come out of it - other that the pre-determined set of 2 massages that were already included in our package (the consultation seemed like a waste of time). The masseuse Mahendra was also very good. Rooms/bungalows were nice with an 'open-air bathroom' so you are likely to find toads and other 'crawlies' at night in your bathroom - so you have to be comfortable with nature. Overall, a great stay and certainly recommended.

One of the best properties I've ever stayed in! As per the staff the best time to visit is Oct -March when the beaches are operational. I went in the Monsoon time and loved it. Each Villa has a bedroom (air conditioned), small central courtyard, partially open bathroom, an upstairs sitting area and a small veranda opening to the backside towards the water bodies. The villa is very earthy yet with all the modern convenience. It was delightful! The property is lush and green and a gate leads to Om beach. The art studio houses an artist who was very helpful and gave pottery lessons. There is a meditation hut where you can attend yoganidra and meditation sessions. The yoga studio offers yoga sessions. You can also avail ayurvedic treatments and massages. We enjoyed the interactive cooking sessions with the chefs. The breakfasts were a treat with fresh juices and yummy dosas. I can't write enough about the staff. They are so helpful, friendly and soft spoken. Only recommendation is for the restaurant menu to be expanded for lunch and dinner. For lunch maybe add a mini south indian thali and for dinner add some dosa items.

We spent 3 nights with friends at this fabulous place in Gokarna. This place is highly recommended for people who prefer the quiet and peaceful environment. The cottages are well designed and spacious! The people are the highlight. Courteous, helpful and service with a smile. Right from the reception to the restaurant (especially Jeevan) and room service everyone greets you with a smile never saying no to anything that you ask for! The massage sessions are unique and Sudhir with whom I took a rejuvenation massage was just pure magic ✨ A highly recommended place for a short getaway, if you want to spend some ME time.

One of the exceptional places to be in for a nice rejuvenating experience. Nice villas, excellent service, decent staff, Restaurant offering food with main focus on healthy food. Not a very wide spread resort kind of menu, but a complete healthy menu to choose from. Pranayam, beginners Yoga, Yognidra sessions, advance Yoga, Meditation sessions offered at its best in dedicated areas with good teachers. Ayurvedic and naturopathy consultations and massages are also available and worth an experience. Property, surroundings, villas, walk to the beach and the staff everything is at its best.
