On the Grid : Chaco Bar

"Go for lunch and get in early. From Wednesday to Saturday, this yakitori restaurant makes just 30 bowls of ramen each day that are knock-out. Cash only. Cosy, atmospheric interiors (we swear we saw them DIY it all!) polishes off an authentically refined Japanese experience. The round table by the window is the best seat." - Universal Favourite

I arrived just as their lunch service was wrapping up, but surprisingly, it turned out like the most wonderful experience ever. Especially, the outdoor seating had such a lovely vibe during spring. Fat Soy ramen was delightfully classic (and classic flavours never disappoint). I also tried the Yuzu punch drink, which was incredibly refreshing and quite addictive. Highly recommend this place!

I got the yuzu ramen, which they said was their signature. For $25 I believe it is on the pricier side, but the broth was rich and delightful (the yuzu was refreshing enough not to be overpowering, and the seafood based broth wasn’t overly fishy.). In fact the broth was probably the best part of the ramen. Noodles were fine and standard. What disappointed me was the scallop. It had a tough texture, quite overcooked, and there was a white debris inside that I had to spit out. The prawn wonton was ok, prawn was nice and crunchy but nothing special. Portion size was also quite unbalanced. I found it difficult to pair my noodles with the toppings as there were too little toppings compared proportionally to the noodles. It was filling but if there were more toppings (doesn’t have to be meat if cost is an issue- could be more veggies) the ramen would be more balanced.

Chaco Ramen is a popular Japanese restaurant that has been around for a number of years (previously Chaco Bar). The venue is very reminiscent of ramen places in Japan, especially the compact size! We got the Bone marrow ramen (special menu) and vegetarian curry. The ramen was a served in a rich miso broth with all the usual condiments including chashu and egg. The bone marrow itself was nicely charred and you get plenty of spring onion. The vegetarian curry was a disappointment though. It wasn’t aesthetically appealing and really wasn’t any better than cooking at home. Overall, definitely recommend giving the ramen a try! Oh and they forgot to place our order of chicken wings, so definitely get them to repeat your order incase.

I have been to this restaurant many times and I have always been impressed with the ramen. This time, I visited around 12:30 pm. A female staff member took my order—I ordered one spicy ramen, one salty ramen, and gyoza. While I was eating, my gyoza never arrived. Even after I finished my ramen, the gyoza still hadn’t been served. I waited another 15 minutes, but it never came, so I asked for the bill. That was when I found out that the staff member never placed my gyoza order at all. What disappointed me the most was that there was no apology from the staff. This was very upsetting, and it makes me not want to come back again. I hope the restaurant will advise its staff to improve their service.

As a vegetarian I’m normally skeptical when going in for ramen because I know how much meat influences a tasty broth flavour, and a great veggie broth can be hard to find. I tried the veggie ramen and added silken tofu and egg for protein and was pleasantly surprised! The broth was super tasty and had me wanting to take the next bit. I loved the flavours - the first time I’ve had a tomato based Japanese ramen. My only complaint is I wish it didn’t end, and I could eat more! 😊

A great local ramen spot tucked away in Sydney’s east. The menu isn’t your typical ramen joint which is a refreshing surprise. (Cold tomato truffle) While the service was a little slower than expected, the food more than made up for it. Worth the visit if you’re after something a bit different from the usual ramen experience.

A very pleasant little place with delicious food. The ramen is not the usual kind – it comes with scallop, which is quite unusual but absolutely delicious. The gyoza are outstanding. Friendly service! Bravo!!!

Great little traditional ramen restaurant in Sydney! You leave your name at the door and wait to have a spot to be seated. The place is small, but they manage to fit a bunch of people. We had the gyozas, which were pretty good, specially with the chilli paste. Then I tried the yuzu ramen with extra chilli oil and egg, and it was incredibly good! For dessert they had a brulé cheesecake, which was pretty good with the exception that it still was frozen in some parts (we saw they heated it in a microwave before serving, but it wasn’t enough). Overall, very good and genuine ramen place in Sydney.
