Crater · Hawaii County
"Driving along Chain of Craters Road covers about 19 miles end to end and descends roughly 3,700 feet from the summit of Kīlauea to sea level; without stopping the drive takes around 30 minutes, but numerous lookout points, pull‑offs, and short hikes make a relaxed trip take longer. The route begins close to the Devastation Trailhead and has changed over time as lava flows have covered portions of it; as of 2025 the scenic drive abruptly ends at a lava flow spot near Hōlei Sea Arch. There are no services along the road—no food, water, or fuel—and cell service is limited, so I recommend filling your tank, packing snacks and water, pre‑downloading maps, and checking the National Park Service for closures or active lava updates before you go." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle.
