Chai's Garden Thai Restaurant

No longer good for vegetarians! I was there last night and for some reason they have started using fish paste in their curries when they never used to. Such a shame as this used to be my favourite Thai place in the area.

You can either dine in the restaurant or dine in the joining pub. Drinks come from the pub so a wide range of drinks available. Food is always very good quality, thoroughly enjoyed every meal there! Love the panang curry and prawn pad thai.

Lovely little thai restaurant the pa nang curry was nice just missing the slight kick. The coconut rice did not taste of anything and was overcooked. Service was A+ absolutely love Henry. Drinks were reasonably priced. Would return for a quick lunch but not a main event.

Dined at this restaurant a few weeks ago and was quite disappointed. First of all the restaurant was freezing, my husband and I were so cold we had to leave our coats on. We enjoyed some of the food, but it lacked the spiciness and zing we prefer when we have Thai food. Wont be dining here again, sorry :(

our thai go-to takeaway. A little pricey for takeout as they charge full prices. Don't recommend phoning to order, it can get mixed up and then they claim they run out of it so they substituted with something else, weird experience. Great padthai

I’ve enjoyed the food here in the past, but the service has consistently been a disappointment. I’ve been here twice before, and both times the service was painfully slow. Tonight was the breaking point. After spending some time at the bar, we came downstairs to the restaurant, which was mostly empty, only to be told they couldn’t seat us because they were "too busy." This felt less like a legitimate concern and more like an excuse, especially given the many available tables. It seemed like the staff couldn’t decide whether or not to serve us, but ultimately chose not to. The lack of effort and customer care was disheartening. It’s incredibly disappointing to see such poor service overshadow what could otherwise be a great dining experience.

Food is really tasty, but the service is really poor! This was the first time there, but again, as the food was good I thought about giving another try and book a table in 2 weeks time. I asked for the waitress if was possible to make a booking. She left, spoke to the person who took the order, then came back and said...Its fully booked!...and the left the table. The exact dates were not even asked, so they didn't even know for how many people the booking would be. The FOH team since the beginning didn't make the atmosphere enjoyable at all. On my way out I made a comment to my friend, and the 2 girls at the bar started laughing. I didn't get the joke but....

The service was terrible first of all they made us payed a £30 deposit to book a table when it was empty we ordered 3 egg fried rice and they brought us 2 we asked if they could bring it and they said they had run (they couldn't be bothered to make another batch) they then finnaly made it and slammed it down on our table and the rice and curry's came ten minutes apart! The food was good though

In need of food on New Year's Day after a tramp round Nunhead Cemetery, Chai's seemed like a great idea especially when we knew we could have a cheeky pint beforehand in Skehan's and then wander out the back door and down the stairs to Chai's which is situated in the garden of the pub. It's definitely one of those places you need to know about as you are highly unlikely to come across it by accident. The restaurant itself is basically a large conservatory with chunky wooden furnishings and is decorated with a nice variety of Thai artefacts. The staff are all very welcoming and pleased to offer advice if it's needed. I have lost count of the number of times I have dined here with B and friends over the past few years; it's a local favourite and can be relied on to serve up a tasty Thai feast whenever you feel the need for some spicy comfort food without breaking the bank. We kicked off with our usual starter of the Jasmine Platter which was a nice selection of Thai favourites. Our guest Patrick had the Tom Woon soup which came with plenty of well flavoured chicken. For the mains we had a masaman curry, chicken panang and my personal favourite the tamarind duck which is a sliced breast sitting on a bed of seaweed with a very tasty sweet and sour sauce. There is a small reasonably priced wine list or you can order beer or larger from the pub and have it brought through. It gets very popular with the locals here at the weekend so I would recommend booking in advance. We tumbled out into the chilly night air well satisfied with the way we had kicked off 2011.

One of those places you drive past and say "oh we should really go to that restaurant". Well after a few years we finally made it and i'm glad we did. Basic Thai but well made with a smile. The UK doesn't offer great Thai food in general but this is at the upper end of your standard takeaway fare. Authentic pad thai, decent masaman curry. No frills but reasonably priced and freshly made. A good quick bite.

I was not happy here food was below average and the staff's attitude was not helping either. I don't think I'm going back no matter the case. There are lots of better Thai restaurants around.
