Chalet Backpackers – A solid, charming base in Dunedin Chalet Backpackers was my first stop when I arrived in Dunedin for my studies back in 2017. It’s not luxury – but for the price, it was absolutely fair. The rooms and furnishings were a bit older, but everything was clean and functional. The building itself has a certain old-world charm, with a slightly quirky and winding layout that adds character. It’s easy to get a bit turned around inside at first, but that’s part of the experience. All in all, a reliable and budget-friendly place to stay. Not perfect, but definitely a good starting point in Dunedin.

Chalet Backpackers is a really amazing hostel. It has a full kitchen, a music/pool table room, a TV lounge area with a Playstation, a library, and a balcony with an amazing view of Dunedin. It could definitely use some repairs here and there, but it's great to stay short or long. I liked that it had plenty of public parking spaces near it so you could drive there without having to walk far after parking. Probably the best hostel in Dunedin, it had such a home-like feel and great pricing for a hostel. Would definitely stay here again!

It was a good 3 nights I had and wished I stayed more, the receptionist (I've forgotten her name) was lovely to deal with and made myself at home especially the guests, if any issues arose she would resolve them promptly. Highly recommend this Hostel if you're making tracks up to Christchurch.

Difficult place to give a review. Place is super clean and well maintained even as the facilities are quite old. On the other side, the beds are normal beds without privacy shades, personal lamps or electro outlets.

A fine hostel in a creaky old house. If only the beds were sturdier and with more amenities (curtains, outlets, lights). The check-in system could also be less clunky.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Chalet Backpackers for some months a few years ago. My stay left such an impression that I felt compelled to write this review. Met loads of awesome people and wow what an interesting and beautiful building! The owner Richard and administrator Chris were not only friendly and but also great to chat with. I felt thoroughly comfortable and entertained throughout my stay. All in all I couldn't recommend Chalet Backpackers more highly and on my next trip to Dunedin I'll surely spend some more time there :)

This hostel is such a vibe. I believe it was a massive royal house back in time and it hasn’t lost it’s charm. Carpet everywhere and high quality old furniture makes you feel like taking a trip to the past. Only downside is the reception being closed from 3-9pm which obvs. is peak arrival time and you have to call a lot of phone numbers until someone tells you the front door entrance code.

Cozy and historic hostel within walking distance of the city centre. We really liked this hostel and its character. The staff is friendly, rooms comfortable, the kitchen clean and well equipped and nice lounge areas. Some parts are under renovation so it will only improve from here.
