"Restaurant le Chalet de Gruyères If you visit in the autumn, watch out for the falling apples on the outdoor terrace of this old fondue chalet in the center of the medieval village of Gruyères. Salads are fresh heaps of greens, bouillon is served with or without egg, and platters of AOP-protected (Appellation d’Origine Protégée, or Protected Designation of Origin) dried meats arrive on cutting boards. But since Gruyères is home to Switzerland’s first luxury product, Gruyère cheese, opt for heavy stuff like croûte au fromage (an open-faced grilled-cheese sandwich), gooey raclette served with boiled potatoes, Alpine macaroni and cheese, quiche gruyèrien , and moitié-moitié fondue, made with pungent vacherin and Gruyère cheeses and best washed down with Swiss wines like chasselas. In the winter, don't miss the fondue vacherin, served melted in its original tree-bark packaging, or the chestnut vermicelles atop a bed of meringue and Gruyère double crème."

Excellent lunch today included salad, bread, sliced roast beef and potatoes! Just what we were looking for….with a great outdoor table and view!

The service was great! Food was okay, you have to cook it yourself. They have a good alcohol and cheese selection.

The Château de Gruyères Restaurant is an absolute gem, and it deserves every one of its 5 stars! We’ve been coming to this restaurant for years, often as a big family group, and every single visit has been exceptional. The staff here go above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome, no matter the size of the group or the complexity of our needs. Their warmth and professionalism create an atmosphere that feels both elegant and inviting. The food is simply outstanding—authentic, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Whether you’re indulging in their traditional Swiss dishes or exploring other menu options, every bite is a delight. The fondue is, of course, a standout, but so are the other regional specialties, which are prepared with incredible care and quality. The location adds an extra layer of charm. Dining in such a historic and picturesque setting, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside, makes the experience truly unforgettable. The attention to detail in both the service and the cuisine ensures that every visit is as memorable as the last. If you’re visiting Gruyères, this restaurant is a must-visit. It’s not just a meal—it’s an experience of warm hospitality, excellent food, and beautiful surroundings. Highly recommended!

Food was delicious! Took an hour to get it though. They apologized for the delay but why?? It was also so hot. So waiting, hungry and sweating was not a great combo.

This restaurant is located in the central area of the small town of Gruyère. If you wish to visit, make sure to book in advance as it gets very busy! It’s perfect for solo travelers, as they offer a fondue for one, which comes with bread, potatoes, onions, and cornichons—enough to satisfy, so you don’t need to order extra if you’re alone. They also serve great local wine, and the interior is very cute. There’s a lovely terrace as well. The fondue was genuinely very good. Staff were very nicely dressed and were nice 🙂

Google
Amazing restaurant! We got fondue, roast beef, and the meringue w/double cream and everything tasted amazing. The service was top-notch, the waitress, Lise, was super nice and came to us often. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Google
Super highly recommended! They only serve fondue as a main dish and it is delicious. The service was quick and the staff were very friendly.

Google
I had the best fondue and raclette here—generous portions at a reasonable price. However, the experience could have been much better if the weather was cooler. It was hot and humid inside the restaurant with no air conditioning, and there were a lot of flies and even some wasps. We had to eat while sweating and constantly swatting away insects.

Yelp
We were having a hard time looking for the restaurant, turns out they are now located right beside the hotel. The original building is no longer exist because of the fire last year. The fondue is pretty decent.

Yelp
Advertised to be the best fondue restaurant in Gruyeres/Switzerland, we had to stop by and try if we were to have at least one fondue meal while in Switzerland. Our party of 3 ordered 1 portion of fondue (came with bread, potatoes, and pickled vegetables), along with 1 quiche. The fondue portion was large as it came with almost 10 small potatoes! Very cute restaurant, quite busy as well. Felt a bit touristy overall, but I doubt there isn't a touristy part of town in Gruyere. Price was very reasonable as well.

Yelp
Probably the best restaurant in the center of Gruyères old town. They make a wonderful fondue and I had an incredible fresh Gruyères cheese quiche! Amazing. You can also get basic slices of the superb local cheeses to enjoy at the table. You can eat inside the adorable chalet or enjoy the nice sunny terrace across the street. Great service and just next-door to the incredible HR Giger museum and the beautiful Château on the hill. Save your receipt because you get 10% off in their shop next-door.

Yelp
It was our first time in Switzerland and didn't know what to expect in this small town. Most of the restaurants that we went to asked if we had reservations and this place, accommodated is even if they're a full house. The staff were friendly and the ambiance was beautiful with the nice view from the window. The pasta was little on the dry side, not sure if that was a Swiss tradition. The Rosti was ok, to be fair Idk how it's typically cooked, but it was a tad salty for my taste, could be due to the amount of cheese and bacon. I would eat here again to give this place another shot as well as order something else on the menu.

Yelp
All the food in Switzerland was amazing, but this was the one and only time I had fondue. We sat on the sunny terrace on a beautiful September day, and enjoyed the flow of conversations all around, and the delicious fondue with potatoes, bread, pickles, and pickled pearl onions. It was perfect. Our flame under the pot did go out at the end, but we were almost done. We had great service. I later wished I would have got the raclette, because no other restaurant we went to had the raclette burners like they did here. That's the best way to eat it, in my opinion. I would come here again for sure. It is expensive, but everything is in Switzerland.

Yelp
Thank you to all the Yelp reviewers as there are lot of fondue places to choose from when visiting the Gruyeres Chateau. Ordered the fresh crudites with dried meat, macaroni and fondue. The fresh crudites is really salad with green and purple cabbage and carrots with lots of dressing (a little too much). but the veggies are fresh and it pairs nicely with the fondue. The dried meat was ok, but gets overshadowed by the fondue. Ordered the macaroni for the kids. Pasta was done well and the ham salty and potatoes a nice and different twist to macaroni. The cheese comes on the side so you can adjust the amount you'd like. The cream sauce was more liquid-y, then thick. The fondue was delectable! Creamy, rich, salty, thick, perfect for dipping bread, potatoes, pickles and pickled onions. All go so well together. I wish we saved room for dessert though this type of meal is heavy. Perhaps come for lunch and then a late afternoon treat to try the dessert. Unfortunately didn't get pictures as we were starving and couldn't wait to dig in. I mean, we're in Switzerland eating fondue!

Yelp
Le Chalet is located immediately before Château Gruyères. Deemed as a local favorite, this charming restaurant is all about its cheese! We ordered the fondue and their version of mac and cheese - both we absolutely amazing! The fondue was gruyère and local chasselas wine based and served with boiled potatoes, bread, pearled onions, and pickles. It came pipping hot and tasted delicious! The mac and cheese was coated in a rich and creamy gruyère base topped off with chunks of ham. Both dishes could easily be enough for 3-4 people, but we just couldn't get enough! Service was very quick and friendly. Prices were quite reasonable. Definitely check this place out for a delicious meal!

Yelp
Love this place would come back for more! We loved the food and ambience of this place. We had salad, plate of ham fondue and house white wine. I would of come back to try some other items on the menu since it was not enough room in my tummy at that particular moment. And we wanted to try some items from desert menu. If you like cheese you can not go wrong with any item on the menu.

Yelp
Amazing!! Fondue was delicious and the mixed grill was full of flavor. The fondue came with bread and boiled potatoes and was creamy and delicious. Between that and the flavorful meats, it was the most amazing meal I had in switzerland. If you try to sit inside, you'll either wait or get turned down like we did...the first time. And then just walked about 20ft to the outside terrace and sat down in about 10 minutes. Great!!

Yelp
My first time trying authentic raclette in Switzerland happened here! The interior (and exterior) of this restaurant is so cute, like a little wood cottage and the waitresses are super friendly. I honestly don't remember much of the menu because once I saw raclette, I just stopped reading because I was super excited to try it. For those of you who don't know, it's basically a rectangular block of gruyere cheese heated up throughout your meal with their infrared technology. You then spread the cheese from the top layer onto potatoes and eat them with pickled shallots and pickles. This Swiss dish is so simple, but delicious. For dessert, we had the berries and cream. Amazing. Seriously, the dairy in Switzerland is unparalleled.

Yelp
For authentic Raclette or Fondue, served by authentic Swiss ladies that will remind you of your Grandmother, look no further when visiting the medieval town of Gruyères. This is the only place I ever eat when visiting the castle-- the other places all have the vibe of tourist dives. Whenever I am at "the chalet" it is filled with locals all happily carving away at their blocks of raclette cheese, which is slowly melting under a tabletop heat lamp designed for this purpose. Save room for their legendary desserts! Of particular note is the unforgetable Rasperries with Double Cream, my personal favourite. I sometimes drive all the way from Geneva just to get some of this Mana.

Yelp
This is typical, the staff delivers the fondue and they don't advise or watch the guests who typically don't have experience eating fondue. We ordered a Vacherin for our friends who were visiting, it was served too hot and turned to rubber. You cannot use the same heater as a Moti-Moti. It is sad that you pay so much and have a bad experience. Many of the Gruyerian restaurants that cater to tourists are guilty of this. Restaurants in Gruyere need to do a better job of helping guests experience the best in hospitality rather than the way they are treated at the Chalet.

Yelp
My fiancé and I had one order of the toast with cheese and ham (I think it was something called crouton au fromage) and the cheese fondue for one person. There was plenty of leftover so I suggest ordering the cheese fondue for one person plus a side salad and that should be enough for 2. The cheese fondue was nice and had a mild flavor. I didn't feel sick after eating almost the entire bowl! I wish it came with more sides, as there was only bread, potatoes, pickles and onions. I'm not sure if this is typically what's offered in Gruyeres but I would have likedsome dried fruits or different veggies perhaps. Meal cost around 70ch for two, including a cafe and a small glass of their white wine (the one they suggested that goes well with cheese fondue).

Yelp
Simply the best fondue. Creamy and light (well, as light as it gets). Very friendly and attentive service. Yes, it's expensive, but it's worth the 150 km one way drive.

Yelp
This place is very cute, the menu looked OK, we only stopped for tea, coffee and dessert. We heard it is the place to go for the famous merengue double cream dessert in Guyere. The merengue was OK, I have had better, but the double creme was really yummo - high cholesterol people beware, this stuff was thick and rich. My coffee was served with a chocolate pot filled with creme as well. Any place that gives me chocolate is A-OK with me. The waitresses may have been too busy talking amongst themselves for us at times, but it was an OK place to stop in Gruyere. The food that others was eating did smell OK, but I can't vouch for anything besides mernegues!!

Yelp
We have eaten here multiple times in a span of 15 years. It's still the best restaurant in the area even though they all pretty much serve the same food. We tried the other restaurants previously and this still has the best staff and ambience. Some of the staff in the other restaurants can be rude but never experienced it here. Raclette still tastes the same as the first time I tried it. The roasted small potatoes were very tender. Pickles went well with the viandes and cheese.

Nikki S.

Yelp
Very cute little restaurant with a good fondue. I wish they would bring out more things other than potatoes for the fondue, but the cheese was fantastic. The quiche was one of the best I've had. The toasted cheese however, not good at all. It was soggy bread with bland cheese, the ham was fine but I would not recommend it.

Yelp
I have been to Gruyere three times, and each time I have eaten at Le Chalet. There are many restaurants in Gruyere, and I have heard good things about them, and I REALLY need to break away and try something different, especially for ensuring a balance of reviews, but when you know something is good, it's hard to try something different. The service is great, the raclette is served on a hot plate the traditional way, and you get to shave off as much of the melting cheese as you like. Unlike, at other restaurants, in which the server will shave off some cheese onto a hot plate and leave you. You are then forced to eat the cheese glob on your plat as fast as possible before it becomes a solidified cold blob. It is also fun to grill the meat at your table, and the deserts are fantastic. You can do all of this within a charming little restaurant that feels like you have been transported into a mountain top chalet.

Yelp
So very good!!! We got the fondue, which was absolutely amazing. I mean, fondue in Switzerland generally is really good but this place takes the trophy. Service is very good. Is as expensive as you may learn to live with while in Switzerland. We stayed there for about two hours just enjoying the food and absorbing the beauty of Gruyere.

Yelp
The macaroni cheese was delicious! Nice locations and the service was good. We also enjoyed ice cream and a milk shake for dessert! Very nice and at a good price for Switzerland.

Joe S.

Yelp
Awesome. If you are looking for fondue, where better place to try it. Wonderful chalet setting, good service and great fondue.
