Carmel, Indiana Is Hiding a Christmas Market and Culinary Charms

"A wildly popular food booth known for its raclette sandwiches, where wheels of pungent cheese are melted under heaters and scraped onto fresh bread; long lines are common but customers say the sandwich—topped with ham, pickles, and a dab of mustard—is worth the wait." - Wendy Pramik

I enjoyed my meal, the bourdelaise burger, very good and quick. I did not have any seafood. Seating was immediate, the atmosphere is open, not too noisy, clean, and decorated nicely. Staff are friendly and pleasant. Overall, a great meal at a good price.

Chate M.

Google
The Food was ok, for the price you might as well hit up one of the steak houses in town. Atmosphere is 40 years+ old. Service was extremely slow, as was it to get our food. Sushi, hmm, around 2 stars. We had a party of 5 and were sat at the most uncomfortable table when a both was open. Again, if it was $15 a plate, sure this place might be worth is but $57 for a lobster tail and $15 for 4 pieces of coconut shrimp. Most other dishes are around $25+. No thanks.

Google
I wasn't aware there was a place on the mountain that offered seafood and this place was really good! The service was excellent and the food was delicious; it looks a bit dated inside though. They served fresh, warm rolls with soft butter and the soup of the day was the French onion soup. I got the red snapper special and my friends and family had the ribeye steak, prime ribs, scallops on pasta, and tempura shrimp entree. For dessert, we had the rum cake and chocolate mousse cake. They were a bit too rummy and sweet (respectively) for my liking but next time I want to try the cheesecake with blueberry compote or carrot cake. I think I have a new favorite restaurant now. :)

Jeannie R.

Google
Had the salmon early bird special and it was so moist and fresh. My compliments to the chef. Great friendly customer service. This is the third time we have been there and all three experiences have been great.

Collin C

Google
Amazing food and fantastic service. They are very attentive and polite here. My salmon was cooked perfectly. I had a strawberry margarita. It was really strong and not too sweet. Just how I like it. I'd definitely come back here again. Way better than any food you'll find in Show Low.

Charles E.

Google
Came in for the fish fry and wow! Excellent tempura-type beer batter cooked to perfection! Also ordered a cheeseburger that had the best flavor-beef at it's finest. The cheddar was robust and the garnishes fresh. All the help had smiles that went along with the excellent service. A daily early-bird special will have me coming back to try the rest of the menu-Cheers!

Katie R.

Google
Honestly the surface was fantastic he always made sure we had everything always checked on us try to make jokes but to be honest appetizers were better then full course meal but at market price for snow crab legs to be cold when serve not the best. First time going not Impressed won't go again.

Theresa K.

Google
The food was amazing the shrimp was so good and very large! The homemade bread was to incredible! The server was very attentive! Needs a update inside but clean.

Yelp
Probably the best restaurant on the mountain! Not sure how I didn't discover this gem much sooner... They have a kick ass bar with the best bartenders. I assumed it was just a sushi bar, but nope - that's a whole different area. But they do have a legit sushi bar! Early bird menu is fun, and cheap. The Chilean Sea Bass (not cheap) is to die for. You should go, but try to save me a seat at the bar.

Yelp
My husband and I had dinner last night for our first time there in about 3 years. Our food, service, and drinks were a 10+. . We had the scallops over pasta and the shrimp Florentine. They were absolutely delicious! The soup was so yummy, and the lemon drop martini was shaken and delightful. Our waitress was a dream. The environment in the bar area is lively and the staff are so eager to please. Will definitely make it our go to from now on. Great job!

Yelp
A friend and I representing an organization took an important person to dinner, wanting a really good meal. Their food was awesome! Cozy but not crowded in the restaurant, and extremely attentive service. Will definitely be back!

Patrice D.

Yelp
Excellent menu choices and all of enjoyed the meal. Server was very attentive and fun. Highly recommend

Matthew N.

Yelp
Great food. Literally the only place in the mountains that can seem to cook a steak properly. Been to cattlemen's half a dozen times and have ALWAYS left disappointed. Not here. Food is great, atmosphere is fun. Service is always top notch. One of only a couple places we would recommend out here

Carol M.

Yelp
Overpriced and under delivers, server said he was only going to bring us one loaf of bread since just 2 of us, I pointed out to him that each entree comes with a loaf, he said they like to save loafs for other diners, butter is rock hard with the bread, chicken breast more like pigeon breast, mushroom sauce was good but way too small of pasta portion, come on people, pasta is cheap, you don't have to be, shrimp cocktail with 4 shrimp for $15, already recommended another friend to never go there, I'll continue to go to W and Z where you can get 10 large tempura shrimp for $10.00, you would think a place like the Chalet could at least have room temperature butter to spread on the bread, and we had to wait 20 minutes for the bread, no one ever offered to refill our water either, I'll never go there again and will continue to recommend friends don't either

Scott M.

Yelp
Great seafood on the mountain. Drinks were well made and tasted flavorful and not watered down. Very professional service and excellent staff. Definitely recommend for Pinetop area!

Bonnie W.

Yelp
Good food, service and ambiance. Go for the Early Bird ribs, and order onion rings. I had the liver and onions.., very good, but so think the ribs are better.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
The menu choices are great. Quality of food is excellent. Prep needs help and some adjustments. French onion soup should NEVER be just broth with onions. If touting French style, offer it French style. Broth, with crusted round of bread with melted Gruyère cheese on top and toasted ever so lightly. Do not put sliced cheese then croutons on top, heated in microwave AND do not charge extra for the bread and cheese!!
google avatar

Bob W.

Yelp
NOT a place for steak. Nice clean place, excellent service but the ribeyes are awful. The last two times we visited, the steaks arrived over cooked, and the replacement was awful. 50% fat and gristle. Wouldn't even take the leftovers home to feed to our dogs. If you're looking for a good steak in Pinetop, you can skip this place.

Charles B.

Yelp
Really a disaster. We were seated upon arrival, but not informed until the waiter was ready to take our order that about a quarter of the menu entrees were no longer available. We adjusted our order accordingly, but soon learned that other things were also not available (e.g. salad, and clams for their muscle and clam dish). We instead ordered soup and other entrees. After a while the waiter came back to inform us only one soup was available. We finally got up and walked out. They should have informed us about their inability to serve a decent meal before they even sat us down. They did provide bread and water, both of which were fine.

Yelp
Last night I visited The Chalet for supper and was knocked out by the delicious food and attentive service by the Co-Owner Shawn, himself. Shawn described all of the specials in detail and was personable. Started with the piping hot escargot which was tender & garlicky with a nice sauce. It was complemented with garlic toast. The crisp salad with house-made raspberry vinaigrette was served on a cold plate with an ice cold fork! What a pleasant surprise. For my entree, I ordered the Danish Baby Back ribs and they were a 10! After that the Server GeeGee, whipped me up a scrumptious espresso martini. I highly recommend and can't wait to go back.

Miles C.

Yelp
Four of us had dinner at the Chalet on June 20th. The restaurant is moderately appointed and a bit noisy--not the place for a quiet, romantic evening. But the food was absolutely excellent. I had the Chilean Seabass and it was one of the best that I have ever had; another in our party had the Scallops and had the same experience as I as did another that had Cajun Catfish--all of the dishes were excellent. the Clam Chowder was also remarkably well done. Highly recommended and we will return.

Mark S.

Yelp
Food is prepared better than in the past. Service is outstanding. Portions are kid size. Calamari appetizer was enough for one person , Salmon if I weighed it I would be surprised if it was 5 ozs. Three table spoons of vegetables. I went home and ate.

Bonnie W.

Yelp
The Chalet reminded me of a classic restaurant of the 50's. The food and service were excellent. The ambience was quirky. I think there were 4 eating areas. We ate in the dining room that was nautically themed. They also have a sushi bar, and there was another regular bar that looked outside, Everything looked delicious.

Yelp
Finally went here last Thursday night with one other couple. We order an appetizer of potato skins. My husband found a long blonde hair in his Potatoe skins. Told the waitress and she was apologetic but did not offer to take it off our bill. I just don't think you should pay for anything with a hair in it. That kind of put a damper on the rest of the food. Will not be back.

Rita A.

Yelp
Try the Duck Tenders appetizer ! It's the Best! The Chicken Regency is super delicious too!

DC K.

Yelp
Wish I wasn't on a diet cause everything on their menu looks good. I got the escargot , the clams, and the duck they were all so good and I ordered a special they had which was a sea bass. The service was good, had someone in training but professional. Ambiance is smooth, cool quiet a lot of old white people

Abigail D.

Yelp
We loved The Chalet!!! The sushi was the best we have ever had! Kyler was our server and OMG he was the best!!!! So attentive and amazing fun service! sushi went down fast just like the beer and saki!!

Yelp
4.75/5 stars We drove by the Chalet on our way to Pinetop-Lakeside. I hadn't seen it in my Yelp searches so I looked it up. It has some high and low reviews-but we've seen that often here so we decided to go. The Chalet also has Sharky's Sushi Bar in it but I am reviewing just the Chalet restaurant. I have to start my review with the service because it was that important. Service was impeccable. Danielle was nice, professional and made us feel at home. She is very wonderful. McClayne also worked our table and was always there to check on us and refill waters. They were a big reason for our great experience here. They still open at their summer hours of 4:30pm this week so we got there early. They have Early Bird Specials from 4:30-6:30 which are lighter meals. The Early Bird Menu has 8 options. My husband decided on the Meatloaf and I chose the Chicken Regency-a small chicken breast served with linguini and a creamy brandy mushroom sauce. You can add soup or a garden salad for $3. They start your meal with a warm, fresh loaf of bread with soft butter that is delicious. Our meals came soon after. The meals are smaller-but we felt they were plenty. Hubs really enjoyed the meatloaf (nice caramelization on edges) and mashed potatoes with brown gravy with broccoli & carrots (perfectly cooked). The Chicken Regency was really good. The creamy brandy mushroom sauce was delicious and the linguini made it perfect. Having the smaller Early Bird dinner let us have room for dessert. My husband picked this Bundt cake (that looked innocent) but Danielle said it was the rum cake-which perked my ears since I read it was really good in Yelp reviews. Oh, the Captain Morgan Rum Cake is what naughty dreams are made of...well, mine at least, since I dream of food. The cake is soaked in a rum and has dollops of whipped cream around it. It was scrumptious. It may be the best dessert I've had in a long time-maybe ever. This is a great restaurant with wonderful ambiance. The nautical theme makes me feel at home. Yep, nautical theme at a restaurant named the Chalet-but I bet lots of people gaze at the sandy beach mural when it's freezing and there is snow up to their knees. I think it works here. The place feels homey. Service is perfectly wonderful! This is the first time I can't wait to come back to try something new. I highly recommend the Chalet. I agree with the other reviewer who said the prices are fair. We will definitely be back.

Angela W.

Yelp
Great, friendly service and excellent food choices. The dinner salad was fresh and crisp along with delicious homemade ranch and a raspberry vinaigrette. We had sushi and grilled salmon. The salmon was perfectly cooked (not overcooked) and the sushi roll was amazing! We will be back soon!

Linda L.

Yelp
Food was great. Calamari was good. Ribs saucy and sweet tasting. Husband did a chicken and pasta dish loved it. Service excellent all around. Ambiance is good. Maybe update the upholstery in the booths and rug. But all is good

Yelp
One of the best steaks on the mountain and don't miss out on the mussels and clams! Yummmmyyyyy! Great service, great bartenders and amazing atmosphere! There's a reason there are regulars!!!

Shelly T.

Yelp
Oh! My! My! This place is amazing. The first thing you will probably notice is how comfortable it is. It's super clean and very well-maintained. The unique menu was a breath of fresh air! so many options to choose from. Steaks, ribs, seafood, sushi, an amazing wine list, and very interesting appetizers! The duck tenders were so so delicious! Our steaks were perfect, our seafood was amazing, the desserts were amazing, and the sushi was fresh, and out of this world! If I could give more than five stars somehow, I certainly would! And the staff was so good to us. Prompt, courteous, and very respectful. We will definitely be returning again, and again!

Aryeh G.

Yelp
Probably the best food in Lakeside-Pinetop. Excellent service. Varied menu. Highly recommend.

Yelp
A lovely dinner house, with atmosphere and very attentive servers. we like to eat early and enjoyed the generous portions and perfectly cooked meals. they quickly seated us and Molly ( by golly) was so kind and efficient with taking our order, getting it out to us and keeping the water glasses full. No complaints from these happy campers. ( except we had no room for dessert!) Thanks to ALL the staff and the owners for a quality experience.

Yelp
The best food and service. Always make a stop when we head to Pinetop for fun! Recommend the fish and fresh bread at the table to start. Will make sure to hit this spot every visit!

Yelp
I walked inside Chalet Restaurant & Bar and the place looks like a seafood restaurant.  I noticed one of the specials of the day was grilled mahi mahi.  I love fried mahi mahi so I gave it a try.  Bread came out first.  Aroma indicated it was fresh out of the oven.  Delicious mild flavor reminded me of Parkerhouse rolls.  Chicken tortilla soup had a mix of delicious flavors.  Loved the tender chicken, crunchy tortilla strings, and the broth.  Beer batter onion rings had a nice crunch and delicious onion flavor.  Mahi mahi had a creamy pineapple sauce which had a mild pineapple flavor.  I did have to send the fish back for more cooking as the center was not fulled cooked.  I'm guessing the fish hadn't been fully defrosted before cooking.  Overall this dish was ok.  Cooking over the gas grill didn't give the mahi mahi much flavor.  I'd like the mahi mahi better if it was grilled over hickory wood with seasoned olive oil. Server was friendly and provided good service.  I enjoyed the food here except for the mahi mahi which was ordinary.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! First of all we got to the restaurant at 4:35, it opens at 4:30. The place was packed and by 5:00 they started telling people there was a 45 minute wait. It's easy to figure out by the number of people in the restaurant that the food was going to be awesome. They had swordfish as a special and that's what we got, it was absolutely done to perfection. Also they offer 2 sides with their entrees, you won't leave hungry. We also tried the Spiced Rum cake and it was yummy. We have been coming to Pinetop for 2 years and this is the first time we tried this place. Definitely coming back!

Yelp
Went there for dinner last night, for the first time. OMG, was excellent - service and food!! The wine list is excellent. We started with calamari - good and the cocktail sauce was outstanding. Then we had a Vegas roll (from the sushi people there) - absolutely fantastic!! The sushi people there really know what they're doing. Afterwards, warm bread and salads. Yum! Then I had the scallops served in a Regency sauce over pasta. My daughter had the shrimp Florentine served over pasta. Both were excellent!!! For dessert we had the rum cake served warm with whipped cream. Scrumptious!! I highly recommend and look forward to going back again and again!

Yelp
We went to Chalet Wednesday night for my birthday dinner. It was wonderful start to finish. The drinks, salad, entrees and dessert were excellent, and our waitress was so warm and welcoming with a great personality. I wish I could remember her name. I would highly recommend this restaurant, and am anxious to go back!

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Delicious. Sat 7/16 about 7 pm. 4 ppl. Seafood- scallops and pasta, shrimp and flirting pasta, coconut shrimp and chicken regency pasta. Cheesecake for dessert. Was greeted almost immediately upon entering restaurant by who I think was the manager and then hosted seated us. . Asked where we would be most comfortably seated. Drink order was taken almost immediately. Great pace, salads and bread came out and then our entrees. Drinks were always fully. Waiter ( and other staff- Jeremy the bread guy, and the bussers) was on point (and funny ;) ). We throughly enjoyed the whole experience. Would recommend going, this is now on our must go when in pinetop. . Oh best part- I am really allergic to shellfish AND I didn't get sick- MAJOR A++++ in my book! You could tell the bar had "regulars" in their- however didn't bother us as we were in the dining room.
google avatar

Lilly K.

Yelp
The atmosphere was good. The server was excellent, very attentive. The ribs were very good. The chicken fried steak was good, but one end was burnt and covered in gravy. The dish was good but needed a little more spices. Overall will go back and want to try their sushi.
google avatar

Sharon A.

Yelp
The calamari appetizer was thoroughly cooked but zero flavor, some spice would of made it immensely better. The catfish was perfectly flavored. I would of liked it cooked a bit longer. The clam chowder soup was very good! The bordelaise burger was very good...came with the bottom bun cut in half. Overall, we rate this eating establishment fair good given their prices!
google avatar

Suzanne S.

Yelp
First night in pinetop & we wanted to have a great dinner while watching the game. Started w coconut shrimp app & it was very good. Hubbie ordered the top sirloin w baked. He said it was great. I ordered a filet w their famous Gorgonzola sauce. I asked for Med rare minus & it came out raw. So back it went but then it was half well done & half perfect. I ate the perfect half but not the well done half. Bar tender comped a desert for the improperly cooked steak.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Great sushi! Great atmosphere! Great wait staff! The kids loved the Salisbury steak too and wanted to go back the next day. Will definitely be going back when we're in the pine top/show low area.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
The food and service are fantastic! Busy place but any and all of the food is worth waiting for! Will eat here every time we come to pine top/lakeside!

Jim B.

Yelp
Excellent! Great Service and GREAT food. We had the Rack of Lamb and it couldn't have been better! The freshly baked bread could have been a bit tastier. This restaurant is on our recommend list!

Gary M.

Yelp
Great food and service! We were there during the early bird specials and only had to wait about 5 minutes for a table. Wife had liver and onions and I had salmon - both well prepared and delicious. Service was quick and efficient. We plan to go back again before leaving town.
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
Sushi here is THE best on the mountain, we've tried several different types and liked all of them. Favorite entree is the scallops. The servers and staff have always been extremely helpful and just nice!
google avatar

Miriam S.

Yelp
Great Hostess, server and even better food! A must have. Unfortunately we ate it before we remembered to take a picture, oops

Trish S.

Yelp
I went there last night 7/17/22 for my 62 birthday, here is my experience. First, I Moscato which was flat I did not mention this. Then I had a great appetizer, clams and mussels. We had to ask a second time for bread. We were kind of surprised because the place was pretty empty for a Saturday night and some staff were standing around. We were also kind of surprised because, with the prices, we though it would be a more "up scale" place. But many customers were looked like they just got off work from the construction site, some in gym shorts, man buns and dirty sandals. The "manager" was dressed in dirty jeans and t-shirt, needed a shave and looked like he had not showered in a week. My husband ordered a well-done burger and I ordered a seafood with salmon salad. The server said they were out of tuna. My husbands burger was not cooked well so he sent it back. He did not want to replace it because thinking the cook would be upset with it and do something to it. I ate the salad however the salmon was not all the way done. The salmon we cook at home has more flavor. During this whole visit the waitress keep saying No problem and No worries, in a patronizing manor. But it got worse, we received the bill and they charged us for the burger that was sent back with one bite out of it and the burnt onion rings intact. The waitress said that the manager told her to charge us for the burger. We asked for the manager. He came out disheveled in a dirty ball cap, looking like a crackhead version of PigPen. He said he opened the burger himself with his own hands and it was cooked. He shouted at us calling us lairs and proceeded to tell us to leave don't come back and stay home n d we were rude to the waitress. He was yelling in the dinning room and maybe he wanted to send a message to other patrons dont mess with him. I asked the waitress if she wanted constructive criticism she said yes and I told her it would be better if she said "MY pleasure." instead of the negative statements she was using. This establishment needs lessons on Public Relations and Cooking personal hygiene, and improper use of language!

Yelp
Chalet is one of our favorite places to go! I wish they were open on Sunday's, but oh well. The sushi bar is the best, fresh ingredients and great service! The Sunrise Roll is our favorite!

Chris H.

Yelp
Probably the best meal we've had on the mountain this summer. Coconut shrimp is excellent. All 4 of us had different seafood entrees and they were all well prepared. Derrick was an excellent waiter.
google avatar

Kerri F.

Yelp
Our first time eating here. We ordered the duck and calamari to start. The calamari didn't really look cooked and lacked flavor but was crunchy. I can't really say if it tasted like duck or not but it was crunchy and had a bite from the crushed red pepper flakes. We ordered some sushi rolls and sashimi, not worth the price. The thinnest sashimi I have ever seen. The sushi rolls were small and nothing stood out with flavor. Also, the bread served with dinner was under baked. My son had the full rack of ribs, the bbq sauce was good and over all had good taste. The French fries were crispy and tasty. We did share a piece of the chocolate cheesecake which was amazing! So smooth and creamy with the best chocolate taste. I wish I would have started with that. Our service was fantastic, our server was a young man, sorry I don't remember his name. I only gave 3 stars because the food didn't really stand out enough for the prices and the entire restaurant needs to be updated. The furniture and carpet looks really old. I would definitely go back for the cheesecake but not the sushi.
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
My family is here on a mini vacay. Based off of reviews we decided to give this place a try. I am struggling to write this review because I don't want to say anything in a negative light. However the food wasn't great. I had ordered the ribs, they were cooked appropriately, but the sauce tasted like ketchup. Not great. Another person in our party ordered the burger and said it was bland. The catfish was way too salty. The portions were very generous and the service way great. I wish I had more positive things to say.

Kathy B.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience at the Chalet! Our service was excellent. Danielle was very attentive and provided us with samples of the sauce for the scallops and sea bass. Shawn, the general manager, was very personable and went above and beyond. We had the scallops, sea bass, lamb, and vegetarian pasta. Everyone was very pleased with their dishes. The desserts were also top notch as we tried the chocolate mousse and the rum cake. Would highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Robyn M.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing service, fair prices and cute decor I ordered their "steak of the day" witch was ribeye I was so hungry I forgot to grab a picture, huge juicy steak had a little discoloration on one side of the meat but didn't look "old" , was still a very delicious, will definitely be returning to try their sushi !
google avatar

Angelique F.

Yelp
It's hard to trust a mountain restaurant with a tropical island photo mural and fish net accessory decor. HOWEVER, the chefs here must be Michelin-rated professionals hiding away on witness protection because the food preparation was flawless. I ordered a steak. My dad had scallops with linguine. And my parents also ordered the escargot -- which I would have said was an entirely sketchy call -- except for the fact that it was served perfectly bubbling hot and my parents said it was delicious. Salads were really predictable and mediocre. The side vegetables I ordered were also but were at least not overcooked. Waitstaff was extraordinarily nice to (and indulgent of) my parents. (I didn't have the nerve to order sushi -- saw a lot of rolls being delivered to a nearby table and everyone there looked quite pleased.)
