Chandigarh Architecture Museum
Location: Sector 10-C, Chandigarh (Part of the Government Museum Complex)
Theme: The Making of Chandigarh
Architect: S.D. Sharma (Based on Le Corbusier’s 1965 Zurich Pavilion design)
1. Introduction & First Impressions
Often overshadowed by the larger Art Gallery nearby, the Chandigarh Architecture Museum (also known as the City Museum) is a hidden gem for anyone interested in how this city was actually built.
The building itself is an exhibit. Unlike the Art Gallery's monumental scale, this structure feels more intimate. It is built in exposed concrete with a unique "tube-like" entrance and a roof composed of inverted and upright pyramids. It feels distinctly "Corbusian" but was actually completed in 1997 to document the city's history 50 years after independence.
2. The Visitor Experience (Floor by Floor)
The museum is designed to be viewed chronologically, starting from the basement and moving upwards.
* Level I: The Basement (The Origins)
* Theme: Partition & Conception.
* The Vibe: Somber and historical.
* Key Exhibits: The journey begins with the trauma of the 1947 Partition, which necessitated a new capital for Punjab. You will see rare letters and documents detailing the search for a site (eventually the foothills of the Shivaliks).
* Don't Miss: The section dedicated to the first American team (Albert Mayer and Matthew Nowicki). Most people forget they designed the original master plan before Le Corbusier took over. Their sketches show a very different, more "garden-city" version of Chandigarh that never happened.
* Level II: Ground Floor (The Master Plan)
* Theme: Le Corbusier & His Team.
* The Vibe: Technical and visionary.
* Key Exhibits: This is the core of the museum. It covers the arrival of Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret.
* Highlights:
* Original Sketches: Hand-drawn sketches by Le Corbusier showing his thought process for the Capitol Complex.
* Jeanneret's Room: A full-scale replica of Pierre Jeanneret’s living room, complete with the now-famous Chandigarh Furniture (cane and teakwood chairs) that are auctioned for millions globally today.
* Level III: First Floor (The Evolution)
* Theme: Chandigarh Today & Tomorrow.
* Key Exhibits: This section focuses on the growth of the city beyond the original Phase 1. It displays details on the "unbuilt" Chandigarh—projects Le Corbusier designed but were never constructed, such as the Governor's Palace.
3. Practical Information
* Ticket: ₹10 (This is separate from the Art Gallery ticket).
* Timings: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed on Mondays).

4. Summary & Recommendation
This museum is the intellectual spine of the Sector 10 complex. While the Art Gallery is about beauty, this museum is about process. It offers a rare glimpse into the bureaucratic and creative struggle of building a modern city from scratch in post-colonial India.
Recommendation: Visit this after the Art Gallery. The context you gain here explains why the Art Gallery building looks the way it does.
Next Step: Would you like a similar summary for the Natural History Museum (also in the same complex) to complete your tour plan of Sector 10?
