"Only John Chan could have come up with Chan’s Fine Oriental Dining, Jazz & Blues. The Hong Kong–born restaurant owner is also a painter, photographer, and jazz enthusiast. He won a 2015 Rhode Island Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts and was inducted into the 2018 Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. Nestled between a paintball shop and a railroad in a small New England town, this Chinese-American restaurant is also what one writer deemed “the most inconspicuous blues club in America.” Chan’s father, Ben, bought the restaurant (then known as New Shanghai) from a cousin in 1965, adding the family name to the Woonsocket eatery nine years later. While attending Providence College in the ’70s, John was introduced to jazz and blues by his roommates at a downtown lounge. Rapt, John suggested integrating the jazz and other live music into the family restaurant. A child of the Big Band era, his father agreed, and in 1977, the first act took the stage; a radio reporter for WGBH shortly thereafter coined Chan’s the “Home of Egg Rolls, Jazz & Blues,” aptly summing the unlikely merger. The space behind Chan’s two hand-carved, rosewood doors is a lot to take in. Beyond a brightly-lit dining room and “Horseshoe Lounge” lays the “Four Seasons Jazz and Blues Club.” After a neighboring bank shuttered, the restaurant purchased the space, converting its former vault into the now 130-seat club. Its walls are lined with photographs, paintings, and watercolors of musical greats (some Chan originals) under traditional Chinese trim. While Chan’s stage has hosted acts such as Dizzy Gillespie, Leon Redbone, Livingston Taylor, and Aztec Two-Step, it’s been the backbone of the local jazz and blues scene for decades: “Musicians would have had nowhere else to play for 20 years without him,” a regular told American Blues Scene. With all the art flying around, it’s easy to forget there’s also food: Chan’s boasts four schools of Chinese cooking: Cantonese, Szechwan/Hunan, Mandarin, and Shanghai. While online reviews indicate the cuisine is decidedly not what draws Chan’s loyal followers, as his website reminds us, “an egg roll a day keeps the blues away.”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Wasn’t expecting much based on the reviews and first impression. The furniture looks like it’s 20 years old. Everything is dingy. The benches aren’t attached to anything, so every time the person behind you moves, so do you. The food though was very good. I ordered the General Chicken special (#24) which is General Tso chicken, pork fried rice, and three crab rangoon. Pork is an odd choice for a chicken dish, and the rangoon were a little bit soggy since they were buried in the rice, but the chicken more than made up for these minor issues. The left overs tasted even better for breakfast. Would order from there again, but for pick up.

Good ol' traditional New England style oriental food. I never dined in, usually order it and pick it up. They have a pick up window so you don't have to get out of your car when picking up your order. Competitive pricing and good portions.

Google
Amazing concept but they clearly cut costs with staffing & atmosphere. Oh yeah, and food quality. Then your packed in the joint at tables that remind me of a 90's pizza joint. The owner needs to put the profits back into the business not just for the entertainment

Key Word COCKROACH....I have been going to Chan's for over 25 years. Last Saturday my family of 6 ordered around $87 worth of take out around 8pm. Half way through our meal I was feeding my 20 month old lo mein when I saw a COCKROACH! Disgusted we threw it all in the trash can. I called and spoke to the owner (John?) and he insisted I needed to drive back with the food from the trash and the cockroach so he could see it. I started the conversation off nicely and got nowhere and then my husband took the phone to politely ask him to reverse the charges. He still refused and HUNG Up on him so we decided to have our credit card company remove the charges. DO NOT at Chan's bottom line... I have the right mind to call the Board of Health.

My wife and I arrived at the restaurant around 5:30 on a Friday for dinner before going to the Stadium theater for a show at 8 and we were able to get a table right away which we weren't expecting that we were figuring it was going to be busier but as we were leaving around 6:30 it was starting to fill up, We hadn't been to this restaurant in a long time cause we don't live locally anymore but we were both looking forward to going there and we weren't disappointed the food and service was really good we both decided on the same dish the #17 from the combo section of the menu which was Lo mein, 2 large chicken wings and boneless ribs and it was really delicious and the portions was plenty to the point were we took the rest to go. Also to mention they have a decent size parking lot in the back with a rear entrance to the dining room so I hope this review helps you to decide to give it a try or make a return cause for me this place is somewhat a nostalgic place cause I have been to this place when I was a kid and now I'm in my early 50's so I'll be looking forward to my next visit.

Don’t waste your money. Sugary Arizona iced tea, spring rolls that are obviously the ones you find at BJ’s. Rice noodles with veggies was a huge pile of salty, noodles, carrots, and onions. No seasoning except sodium. Mai Tai is a mix that may or may not include a few drops of rum.

Google
Never again! Asked if menu on website was accurate was told no Lady told me to add 50 cents to each item ok no biggie . Rice 9.00 right add 50 makes 9.50 right I was charged 34.00 for three rices so definitely not just 50 but 2.33 cents more than what I was told total bill 369 and change😳 Second lady I talked to . Rude as hell and then told me when I questioned her about what I was told about the 50 cents says I didn't even charge you the 50.. lol no you didn't you charged me way more than the 50 cents . A big hell no never again

Great attentive service .. Clean .. Food arrived promptly .. Egg rolls were nearly perfect in taste and texture .. Just wish they used more minced celery greens .. Rice was fluffy .. Plenty of meat .. Not crazy salty .. Chow mein was great .. everything arrived at my table in a timely manner and piping hot .. also noticed that they have a small intimate concert venue and host some pretty talented Acts .. James Montgomery band ... Steve Smith Jazz Band ( He was the drummer for Journey ) .. Popa Chubby (an amazing, sadly under-the-radar Blues man) ... Great and talented acts at a more than reasonable price .. check out Chan's .. It's pretty cool UPDATE: Chan's is a great venue to see musical acts. It's very intimate and I was amazed at the acoustics .. sounds great in there. To my surprise, it was very well organized. John Chan does a great job and is very personable .. truly a gentleman

Yelp
I've heard really bad things about the food at Chan's for years. I was there last night for the Bruce Mattson show. 1st to all the haters out there, take it for what it is. Chan's is an institution, it has been around for over 40 years. The the ambience inside is really funky and cool. It's bright very cool colors and fun. Let's talk about the food. I had the best beef teriyaki I've ever had in my life. It was tender, thick and juicy They were really big too. boneless pork ribs excellent. Chicken wings were really good but they're big, and I could only eat one of them. There were three waitresses in the room. They were all season pros and very nice. The other thing you have take into considereation it's a live music venue and they have a lot of great bands that come into Woonsocket to play there. So you get the best of both worlds, you can go see live music and eat Chinese food. It doesn't get much better than that. Also we Got to meet the owner John Chan, an extremely nice man. Now, is it the best Chinese food in the world? No, but I've had a lot worse, believe you me. Will I go back? Absolutely 100%. I look forward to it. Thank you John for keeping live bands going for all these years!

Yelp
This was our first time stopping at Chan's, and it was a great experience. Food wise and listening to Anthony Gomes. Great speakers in an intimate dinner setting. The food was tasty, LOVED the egg rolls and I had the General Tao chicken. Husbands meal was equally as tasty. The waitstaff certainly was hustling but also took care of our needs perfectly. The only area I would say needs improvements would be the men & woman's bathroom floors. They were both incredibly tacky. The rest of the bathroom, toilet & sink area were fine. But lord did our shoes stick. We would go back again for dinner & a show

Robert F.

Yelp
Called in today for a delivery and waited over 4 minutes to have the woman on staff with crazy attitude to the point where I wouldn't take the food for free being concerned there would be spit or worse In it .....definitely need a staff evaluation

Shaunda S.

Yelp
Worst customer service. Called to place a delivery order and the attitude right from the start from the person that answered was crazy then she continued it after taking is off hold and the language she uses was unacceptable.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner with friends as we were in the area and for a local place kind of hole in the wall, the food was pretty good. Had all the typical options for a Chinese place. The food came out quickly and was hot when it came to us which was great. The service was great, super nice and attentive to what we needed. We also had two young children with us so they sat us in our own little room which was great cause the kids could be loud without interrupting anyone. I would not go and seek Chan's out but if I was in the area and needed somewhere to eat it would be an option.

Richard T.

Yelp
Great entertainment but don't dare eat the food. Me and my girlfriend went to hear the band. We had the buffet which looked hours old and all stuck together. We went to hear the band and she started getting sick. We had traveled 80 miles to hear the band btw. We had to leave early as she was becoming increasingly more ill, throwing up and diarrhea non stop for hours. The doctor said to go to ER. Next day I called Chens. No apology. All they would say was no complaints. DO NOT EAT THE GARBAGE food---- never again. Disgusting, disappointed. $20 a piece for garbage to get sick enough to go to the hospital. WTF

Nicholas P.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese food in Rhode Island vs kowloons in Saugus ma. Give it a try you won't be disappointed

Jack F.

Yelp
Place should be condemned. Went there for last time last night. Food was garbage. Ordered fried rice that came out looking like a pile of something they swept up off the kitchen floor then soaked in oil. Some food on pupu platter looked reused. Egg Rolls that are supposed to be so famous were cold and nothing like they used to be because the owner went with a cheaper vender like with everything there. Nothing inside has been upgraded or changed (like rugs or booth seats) in about 50 years. RI board of heath shut this place down a few times for good reason. Just go to RI Board of Health... inspections and actions are available for public review. The only things that still come here are the same city dweller bar flies Stay away if you value you health and $$. It's really a dump.

Devon K.

Yelp
I had the fried rice. Subsequently got vicious food poisoning within six hours. Do not eat it here. Unclean. You'll be sorry.

Richard F.

Yelp
I can only tell you what I got and how liked it. Veggie lo Mien - excellent Crab Rangoon best I've ever had I'm 59 yrs old. Decor needs a lot of work. It's old. But I went there to eat not to browse.

Will F.

Yelp
Very disappointing, to say the least. I was seated in the dining area which had all of one other couple there, so that should have been the first clue. I then ordered the '5 Spice Chicken' dish which is listed as spicy but was not spicy at all...I had to ask the waitress for extra hot sauce. The fried rice was especially bland but luckily, the sodium from the soy sauce enhanced that. I asked the waitress to also get me an order of 'Chinese Rice Noodle' to go but they substituted beef teriyaki for chicken teriyaki, without offering me any other options first. When I got the check, a couple of items had been inflated by the waitress which I had to have her correct...oi vey. The dining room was empty for a reason...

Paul H.

Yelp
This was the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I will never go there again. Nor should you. I did not even intend to give it a weak star.

David B.

Yelp
Let me preface this review by stating this would have been a 5-Star recommendation if it were just for the music (Neal and the Vipers) and the Chinese food tonight, March 4,2023. Neal Vitullo played inspired, genius guitar and the Vipers were "on" all night! We had the Ginger Shrimp with scallions and garlic, excellent! Unfortunately, one of the waitresses let three drunk men in after the halfway point of the show, without paying for tickets I'm sure. The three drunk men stood at the waitress station "swilling" Budweisers, they were still being provided well after "Last Call" and dumping them on our table. They were loud, obnoxious, rude and marred a magical evening! The owner, John Chan was nowhere to be found to be made aware of this issue!!

Alicia H.

Yelp
I've ordered from here for delivery and pick up a few times. I am a fan of the PuPu platter more than my kids. My favorites are the boneless spareribs and the golden fingers. I haven't had anything else but the platter and alway sub the egg rolls for extra ribs. Actually I had their "fried" rice once and was NOT a fan. I haven't been inside to get the full feeling of Chan's. I heard they have a band on Friday's. Once I strike up the nerve to go, I'll give another review. For now this is a review of the food that I had and the service via delivery and drive thru that I have received.

Yelp
Ate at Chan's on February 26, 2021. The Good The bowls of soup offer very generous portions. I had the wor mein soup; my friends each had a bowl of wonton soup. The small comes with 3 large wontons and 2 tender, sliced pork strips. The large comes with 6, count'em 6 wontons, and 3 sliced pork strips. Although the broth had a slight salty taste, it wasn't anything to truly complain about. The wor mein soup was everything I thought it would be. Wor in Chinese translates to "everything," and everything was in this soup. Chicken, pork strip, mushrooms, noodles, bok choy, the works. Again, slightly salty broth, but it was overall very good and a great portion. I ordered a chow mein sandwich and it was delicious. The chow mein was covered in gravy, and the bread was super saturated in it. Not many places offer chow mein sandwiches anymore; this is definitely something to try if you've never had it or if you're trying to find one. The egg rolls were stuffed and the filling didn't have an overbearing taste. I visited The Islander the previous weekend and the egg rolls, to put it bluntly, sucked. Overly seasoned filling with a terrible aftertaste. I liked the vibe of this restaurant. It reminds you of a Chinese restaurant you see in the movies. I hear this place also serves as a venue for live jazz and blues. This is something I would definitely want to check out in the future. The Not So Good The General's Chicken combo plate -- the chicken was overly battered; the crab rangoons had a generous portion of cream cheese stuffing, but lacked crab, and the rice tasted very bland. I feel a lot of Chinese restaurants are struggling to make a delicious fried rice; Chan's seems to be following suit. Although I didn't order one, I noticed a 12 ounce bottle of Budweiser cost $6.50. That is a bit pricey for domestic beer I would think. Our waitress was overall good in terms of taking our order and was friendly; she just didn't come to check on us during the meal. My friend wanted a refill of water and she was nowhere to be found. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and it's probably one of the better Chinese dinners I've had in recent time. I remember growing up and seeing advertisements for "An Evening at Chan's", advertising for the various concerts the establishment offers. I was always curious about the place. I will definitely return here for dinner, as I believe the "bad" items or "cons" of the establishment aren't deal breakers, but rather things that could be worked on.

Mandy N.

Yelp
Great stop!! Love the atmosphere!! Bartender was very hospitable and pleasant!! We will certainly be back!!

Matthew W.

Yelp
I'm a former regular. This was my first time coming back since the pandemic. I'm not complaining about the service speed, which was slow due to a concert in their venue. I'm complaining because there was a small dead cockroach in my won ton soup. I didn't take a picture because I was honestly grossed out and shocked that it happened. I told the waitress and obviously they weren't charging us for any of the apps or drinks on our table... doesn't matter. There is no "make good" for finding a roach in your dinner.

Barbara Ann W.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed myself at Chan's, but not because of the food. The owner, John Chan, is a great host. The place is cozy. The entertainment is amazing, if you go for the famous 'Eggrolls and Jazz' shows, which feature some the area's best musical talent, focusing on jazz and blues. But I've had better Chinese cuisine. On a recent visit, I had one of the reasonably priced combination dinners: Spring roll, garlic green beans and vegetable lo mein. I started with Hot & Sour soup, after confirming that it did not contain meat. Some places use pork. Others, tofu. Chan's was tasty but lacked protein, using neither. It arrived at room temperature so I sent it back. The second time was much better and I enjoyed it. The garlic green beans were crisp and cooked perfectly. They were very garlicky, which I love.. the sauce was a little gelatinous once it began to cool. Tasty, but not appetizing to look at. The spring roll was delicious. The lo mein was disappointing. The texture of the noodles was papery and dry. The sauce appeared to be mostly soy sauce, so it was very salty. The veggies were lacking. My date also ordered a combo dinner: Beef teriyaki, chop suey and fried rice. The beef was rare (red inside), which we'd never see in Chinese cuisine before. The rice was pretty good. The chop suey was bland. Portions were generous and prices quite reasonable. My dinner was $11.50 and I couldn't finish it. The drinks, however, were pricey. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay and a waitress who was nearby suggested I get the bottle. A glass, she explained, was $9, while the bottle was $21. I took her suggestion, since taking home unfinished wine is now legal in RI. But I was disappointed when the bottle turned out to be Barefoot brand. I've got nothing against the wine, but I can buy a bottle at my local liquor store for $8.50, so $9 per glass seemed a bit outrageous. Like I said, I always enjoy myself at Chan's and plan to return later this month. But it has little to do with the food. They used to have a buffet on Friday evenings that was pretty good. I wish they'd bring it back....

JoHannah A.

Yelp
Step in to the past and walk into a real-deal jazz club for the evening. While you're there, treat yourself to some tasty eggrolls. I see some other Yelp reviews here, but #sorrynotsorry there's something wrong with the reviews if Chan's doesn't have at least a solid 4 stars. I mean: it's not often that I look forward going out to eat with the food being a pleasant AFTERTHOUGHT. We go almost every week for the amazing blues and jazz acts that grace the stage with the their talent. This isn't some small time place although the setting is intimate: Dizzy Gillespie has played here MANY times and just last week we saw Chris Beard "the prince of blues". The service and food is wonderful -- and the prices are affordable. If you live in Rhode Island and you're tired of the same-old things to do on a weekend night, make your life better and buy some tickets to a Chan's show.

Lor A.

Yelp
We have ordered several times for take out only. I have never been inside. I like the convenience of their drive up window. Be aware the prices listed on the website are old and add about $1 to everything. Pretty much everything we have tried we did not enjoy. I last ordered veggie delight and it was mostly broccoli and liquid. The liquid should have been a sauce. They should just label this as a soup. Paid $12 for this and it does not come with side of rice. Almost $3 for tiny container of duck sauce. Blah .. wont order from here again

Jason B.

Yelp
This has to be the worst experience my family and I have ever had.... we were the only people in the dining area. That should have been a sign and raised a few red flags since it was a Friday night at a Chinese restaurant.... But figured we'd give it a shot... Well everything was horrible from the waitress to the guy sitting in the bar area dropping "F" bombs like there was no tomorrow... I actually had to walk up to the bar to get a refill of soda because the waitress never came around... but wait... I found her sitting at the bar when I got my sofa refill.... I would NOT recommend this place to my worst enemy... very unprofessional and disgusting.... she yourself the horror and don't bother with this place !!!

Ashley P.

Yelp
I wish I could give Chan's a higher rating because there are some things that I really like about this establishment... unfortunately, there are some things that hold it back. So I have settled on 3 stars.... 4 star entertainment mixed with 2 star dining. The only reason I make the trek out to Woonsocket is for Chan's musical offerings. A blues fan myself, Chan's offers ample opportunity to catch some fantastic musicians here. I most recently caught Jeff Pitchell and his band the Texas Flood and the music was a very enjoyable experience. The host, John Chan (who I swear has not changed in appearance in the last 10+ years I have frequented this venue), is extremely welcoming and accommodating. He presented us with a choice of seats in the cozy club area, filled with large tables at which several parties may be seated. We got there about 30 minutes before showtime so that we could order and start dinner before the show began. Our waitress was as attentive as she could be... there should really be more staff on when the room is packed. It having been a very long time since last eating here... we opted to try out the buffet for $13 a piece. I wish I had checked it out before deciding to partake. The spread was very disappointing. There were approximately 10-12 options to choose from. I ended up with some piles of Pork Fried Rice, Spicy Noodles, Mongolian Chicken, Boneless Spare Ribs, and Golden Fingers. On my initial run through around 7:30pm, I really had to scrape together what was left in some of the containers to even have anything to put on my plate. On my return visit to the line closer to 8pm, the only thing that had been replenished was the Fried Rice. No fingers, a couple scraps of spare ribs and chicken, etc. To top it off... it was cold. The flavor was alright, but made less so by not only the temperature but the presentation. Who wants to put food on their plate when it already seems like it has been sitting there for an eternity. Dried out, picked over... Drinks were tasty and probably the best bet if you are looking to order something here. Delivered quickly, cold, and refreshing. I ordered a Mudslide as dessert and it was delicious. My date ordered a Scotch and Ginger at one point and it was delivered in a large pint glass. An interesting choice but who says no to such a large pour. There is a parking lot on each side of the restaurant with a good deal of street space available as well. Easy to get to. Tickets for the show were $20 and easily paid for through PayPal online off the restaurants website. I would return here in a heartbeat for a show but would be hesitant to plan for dinner again.

Bob C.

Yelp
I know Chan's has been around forever. I remember going to Chan's as a kid with my parents when it was in Providence. We went for their sticky wings which to this day are still good. I just wasn't impressed by the rest of my meal. The white rice was cold and the sesame chicken was too breaded. Plus the door chime kept going off which was annoying. Maybe if we stayed for the show I would give a better review. The service was excellent and the server very polite.

Linda M.

Yelp
A wonderful night of dinner drinks laughter and music! The wait staff is fast and efficient. The food is hot and the drinks are tall. The band was great!

That place will take you money and will not refund you anything at all so beware

Yelp
Birthday gift for husband, went to see Chris Cain. 8:00 show, great seats, fabulous show-up close & personal, ordered beverages and apps (taste & portions were good); staff were hustling and attentive. Great, intimate venue!

Yelp
Got home with takeout and opened it up to this "sesame chicken" this is literally chicken fingers with a few sesame seeds sprinkled on it. We ordered 3 plates of it, safe to say we are not happy. We did not order chicken fingers. This is not the usual sesame chicken dish. We called to ask about it and the restaurant replied that this is what their usual dish looks like..... I'm not buying it, just let us know if you're out... we also ordered crab Rangoon's and generals chicken with rice which were good.

Yelp
Service was awful. Food was below average. I'm only giving it one star because I can't give zero. We were visiting family from out of town and went here for dinner. We waited OVER AN HOUR for our food! Our waitress was nowhere to be found. Other tables around us were flagging down other servers to get their checks. Unrelated to the service, but it was freezing inside. It was December and it felt like they didn't have the heat on. Everyone was wearing their heavy winter coats inside. Overall terrible dining experience.

Yelp
Chan's is one of the cooler places I've drive through. The meal for two was quite expensive for Chinese food and the food lacked flavor. We enjoyed our meal but at the price point we can find other options in the Woonsocket area that would feed us for a whole week at that price. Chan's did serve what seemed to be very healthy food options. Instead of frozen foods it seemed like they were using fresh veggies. I gave them a good rating because of this caveat. Just not sure if I want healthy chinese food or if I want a salt loaded deep friend 'fill in the blank.' An employee also got into a screaming match outside while we waited for drive through. The employees boyfriend allegedly slept with her friend. #awkward

Yelp
We have been customers of Chans for years. But not sure if we will be coming back. I am not one to complain or leave reviews but at this point I feel it is necessary. The last few times the quality and accuracy of the orders has been terrible. Not anything like what we have become accustomed to for years so I don't know what is going on. COVID times or not the times we have gone haven't been busy and this sub par attention to quality and accuracy is unacceptable. The prices have gone way up and wouldn't be an issue paying if they were even worth it. I spent $90 a month ago for a family of 4. The food was tiny. The takeout containers were barely filled. And the sesame chicken had only sauce...not even 1 sesame seed on it. I didn't order chicken fingers soaked in sauce. Not to mention some were under cooked...like the chicken was a raw chewy consistency. We tried again on anew Years Day. Granted a busy time and we were willing to wait for food. Went to pick up at the window 5 minutes before the time they gave. (We only live about 5 minutes away by car). Got the food home and it was stone cold, again tiny and unfilled containers. Spent around $75 for it this time and the chicken fingers that came in the combos were again that raw chewy texture. Crab rangoons were like they came out of the fridge. Stone cold. And the dishes were maybe luke warm. This makes it hard to support small businesses when you can't get consistent quality for what you pay for. Chan's needs to step it up before we will come back...and with the lack of quality and high prices they better do it fast because other restaurants are far superior in the area and worth a few minute more drive to get better quality and more for your money.

Yelp
Chan's has been there for generations, and there's a reason for that. The food is always awesome, the staff is great, they have live music, and they are truly one of the last remaining Polynesian Tiki style restaurants. Excellent food and great drinks. Never change!

Joe C.

Yelp
Sad I used to like Chan's. I still like the music venue that they have inside the restaurant. It is the only reason I gave this place another star. Cool concept to have a live show in a small intimate setting where you can get a scorpion bowl and watch a jazz or blues band. Chan's has the old fashioned tiki bar/restaurant setup which I like. However, "what the hell happened to the food?" I'm not saying this used to be a 5 star restaurant but at the least the food was edible. Now it barely is. Honestly, some of the worst Chinese food that I have had in a while. Everything seems old, brown colored, and all of the dishes taste the same. Bad! How expensive is rice? Do you have to serve 3 day old reheated fried rice? Chan's is an example of a classic car with a blown engine. Thanks

Cherie L.

Yelp
ZERO STARS!!!! I ate here and well the food was edible. Later, I found out by a family friend it has been closed numerous times throughout the years by the RI Dept of Health for rodent issues!!! Such as rodent droppings on food prep areas and on top of food products. As well as dead mice in their basement. So obviously they have an PROBLEM. I looked on the DOH site and this has been an ongoing issue for years n years n years. Not to mention meats not being refrigerated at proper temperatures. I could go on n on. It's public record.

Yelp
OK here goes. It's rare that I review a place more than once. Even rarer that I would go back to a place where I had such a negative experience. Chan's completes the trifecta by actually being the first place where on top of all that, I've gone back for more punishment and had an even *worse* experience than on all previous visits. I try to keep reviews objective, but this place is so bad I almost take it personally. Here goes.. - Arrived 45 minutes before a general admission show yet a good portion of the best seats at largest tables seemed reserved. Got seats no problem, great view. But, seats are old uncomfortable hotel ballroom seats, tables and people are squeezed too tightly. - Took 10-15 minutes to be greeted by the server, and much longer to order and receive our first round of drinks. Said server apologized\complained of being short staffed several times during the night. Same exact thing that's happened on our previous 2 visits. - Drinks were fine, but again, service was horribly slow, and we only managed to fit in 2 rounds during what was probably a 2.5 hour visit - Food was, shockingly, even more disgusting that in previous visits. I get that not everyone has awesome Chinese food, but the rice and parts of the entree were cold and dry, and the entrees just awful. Rubbery bland meat, heavy breading, and terrible cloying sauces. I'm really not overstating when I say this was literally the worse Chinese food I've ever had. And it's not cheap either, which might provide a sliver of an excuse. - During show, someone (Mr. Chan ordered it I suspect) decided to suddenly plug in an obnoxious neon sign right behind the sound board, which was right behind our table. We went from candlelit ambiance to trashy glaring street lighting. I had to go out and request it be unplugged. - I left 3/4 of my entree untouched because it was so bad (Similar with my wife and hers). Did the server finally me if it was OK? Nope. Just ignored it and just brought a container out in case we wanted to take it home. I wouldn't punish my dog by bringing that food home. - During show, servers kept going in and out of the door right next to the soundboard. When they were not literally bumping the back of my chair (due to limited room), they were distracting because there was *live music* somewhere else in the restaurant and Johnny A's show was drowned out repeatedly, memorably at one point by someone belting out "House of the Rising Run" loudly in the lounge. Nice. Really let us enjoy the show we actually paid for. - The performer mentioned several times about having problems with bright lights and flashes. Again, during the show, some idiot *right at the bar* starts videoing with his phone flash on. Does Chan's staff put an end to it? No. They let it go on until Johnny A actually has to stop the show and MULTIPLE TIMES ask someone to get the person to stop with the flash. Did I mention that the food was overpriced and horrible. Please heed me when I tell you this. This place needs to invent a new restaurant category "BYOF" with the F, of course being "Food". Seriously - there is no excuse for this place to have such horrible service and food. If you MUST go there (and we will probably never go again), I seriously suggest eating beforehand, and just plan on getting drinks. And don't sit near the entrance doors or doors next to the soundboard, try for the 1/2 of the room nearer the bar.

Yelp
Very disappointing experience. Went to Chan's tonight for dinner and asked for a table for two. The hostess (which is a very kind appellation) said she wasn't sure if the waitress could handle any more in the dining room and offered to seat us at the bar or the lounge area. There were only three parties eating in the dining room, and there were plenty of tables available, even with social distancing requirements. The bar area, on the other hand, was dark and crowded. We asked the hostess to check on the dining room. She said someone would come momentarily, and then proceeded to count the money in the front cash register. She made absolutely no effort to check if someone would actually come - she was too concerned with counting the money to actually serve paying clientele. After waiting about five minutes for someone to arrive or for the hostess to actually serve customers, we walked out and went to another restaurant (By the way, River Falls restaurant DID serve us a very nice meal).

Nancy T.

Yelp
Such disappointing service. We waited well over an hour for our food. People who came in well after us had their order and food well before us. I understand being busy with a show but have the common sense to have more staff. The show was great! The service-NOT!

Timothy M.

Yelp
So many people in the area have told me to go to Chan's . So I have tried a few other restaurants in the area and at this point by far has been the worst. When you go to someplace for a $17+ dollar take out meal for myself and you open the container and there is "maybe enough" for a lunch meal ! I would not recommend this place for dinner or lunch. So I guess my search for a decent Chinese restaurant continues in the area. Sorry to say I was not happy with the food .

Kelsey J.

Yelp
Is there anything lower than a one star? The service was atrocious and everything took forever! People who came in after us received their food before us. Drink orders never came out at a reasonable time. I understand being busy but there needs to be more staffing during a show.

Kiara V.

Yelp
The food was actually good .. we got a pupu platter for two and the chicken and gravy with fries . The service is why they're getting 3 stars. The waitress was so rude. I didn't get rice so I can't speak on their rice but everything else was flavorful. Place was dead and we were there at around 4pm on a Saturday.

Cam B.

Yelp
Had the "Dinner for two " take out The chicken was burnt The chicken fingers breading were oily The pork fried rice was very dry On the good point the chicken & broccoli and beef lo mien were very good

Jack R.

Yelp
Tried it out again.....two of us. Food was garbage this time and high priced garbage at that. Prices on everything went way up for 2020. The only thing that didn't go up was KENO but give it time, John might find a way to raise that too ! $9.50 for a mai tai now ? Seriously, why punish the few remaining customers you still have ? I know I won't order another. If anything I'll bring my own nips and make my own. Service sucked, had to have the bartender track down a waitress. Took 20 minutes to get waited on and only 2 other tables.

Cathy H.

Yelp
Disappointed! This not-so-reputable establishment has been around for a very long time. But, because there had been an hour wait at Riverview Falls, we decided to give Chan's a try. The best part of our experience was our waitress, Marie! And, the duck sauce! Everything else we ordered was "meh". Wonton soup, dark broth, over-roasted pork strips and bland wontons. Crab Rangoon's, okay, but could use some sweetener. Fried Peking Raviolis, burnt and bland. Sauce was good, but how can you go wrong with garlic and soy! Fried shrimp with Chow Mein and pork fried rice - scared to try this icky, congealed brown sauce poured over Chinese noodles. Shrimp were tasty, but the batter was too thick and not golden brown! And, the rice was so dark, I could barely see the pork pieces. Edible, but not great. Curry chicken and egg roll for J. Just so so. We won't be back! Other than the attentiveness of Marie, I can't give more than 2 stars. It just wasn't very good. Perhaps hiring a brand, new artisan chef who uses fresh, local ingredients could change my heart. Yeah, I'll hold my breath. Take yourselves AND your money and go elsewhere! Asia Grille in Lincoln, RI is pretty good, But the Mandarin Milford, MA is outstanding! Chow! I mean "Ciao!"

Yelp
I usually hit up Ciro's when I'm in downtown Woonsocket, but a few weeks ago with my girlfriend and friend from out of town. I thought the staff was friendly, the food was typical Chinese-American, the inside was very...... flamboyant(?), and apparently Mr. Chan has had a ton of famous people roll through here. I guess there is live music on some night which is pretty sweet. It was as neutral an experience as there is, I would normally give it 3 stars. In all respects, Mr. Chan should be a proud, secure man given that he is the owner of one of the few hot spots in Northern Rhode Island. Why is he such a boorish jerk? Why does he feel the need to yell at his employees in front of his customers (no, he isn't speaking Mandarin)? Why does he need to threaten to tow someone's car who was probably confused by the location of his parking lot? Why does he put up flimsy tape around the parking lot, knowing how windy New England is? Trouble at home or are you just angry Mr. Chan? Well if you ever need somebody to talk to, I'm here.

Bob P.

Yelp
Went last night to see Peacheaters, ALLMANS tribute band. layout, sound, and service were superb. great place for live music.

Robert S.

Yelp
Food was overly salty. Not tasty at all. The fried rice was drenched in Soy Sauce...could not taste the rice nor the other ingredients. Chicken dish was overcooked, horrible. I cook Chinese and it is not difficult to make nice tardy dishes. What a disgrace ! What really bothers me is how the owner can run a business like this after all these mediocre reviews and still continue running the place without any improvement nor care. That does not say much about him.

Pete D.

Yelp
It was good in an odd way. First off lighting was way too bright but seeing that the staff is mostly over the age of 65 I'm sure it's needed. The decor is what's so odd. There is a whole bunch going on and none of it makes any sense at all. The service was decent , didn't come back to check on us but for being busy it was pretty fast non the less. The food wasn't bad at all , actually it was better than I expected. So it's better than a 2, but a low 3.

Allan G.

Yelp
Best dark rum Mai tie in RI. Fresh hot food and large portions. Try the pan fried Peking ravioli and wings! Bennett coming here for 40 years. Also a great venue for blues and jazz.

Alec C.

Yelp
I have been here a bunch of times, and have always had a great time. I try to come every year for the doors cover band and get a dinner and a meal. I don't think I have ever had a bad time here. The energy is alive the music is on point the food is in abundance and comes out lightening fast. ;) I would 10/10 come again! And will be back

Ed W.

Yelp
Been going to Chan's a couple of times a year for the past 10 or so years and I've never written a review. Generally, people say you don't come to Chan's for the food, you come for the music. Over the years, I've never seen a bad show. We were invited to see a comedy show there with another couple. We never heard of the guy. In the parking lot, we watched the guy on Youtube.... ugh. We figured, it was only $10. We got to hang with friends we hadn't seen in a while. The guy was hysterical !!! Another time we went to see the Peter Tork Blues band. I know what you're saying "That name sound familer". Yes, he was in the Monkeys. I thought it was going to be a disaster. Again, I was wrong. They were awesome !!! John Chan has an incredible eye for talant. You won't be disappointed. Now the food. In the past it has been hit or miss. It seems to have gotten better. Not sure what they did. Last night I had the Seafood Supreme. It was amazing.
